View Full Version : What to use to fill rear diff?
WRX Jim 04-06-2004, 05:59 PM I already have the oil and everything, its redline. I relized that it doesnt have anything on the top to use to squeeze the fluids into the rear.
What have you guys used in order to do this.
Asinine 04-06-2004, 06:07 PM Huh? What?
I plan on doing my rear diff soon, but I didn't know I'd run into a prob. I figured it would just drain out the bottom plug and get filled in the top plug... easy as pie.
If this isn't the case, I want to know too!
There are a couple of guys who have used a "hand cream" style pump with a vinyl tube attached available at some automotive supply stores. I just jury rigged a vinyl tube + copper pipe + funnel so that it reached way in there. Some have suggested a turkey baster (it would take a long time that way though).
Asinine,
There just isn't enough room in the back there to simply pour the gear oil in there. Hence the pump/baster/etc...
Otherwise it is really easy ^_^
WRX Jim 04-06-2004, 07:22 PM I bought a adapter peice that screws right onto the bottle and a 1 foot peice of hose .. i can squeeze the fluids into the diff..
it cost me 4 dollars from the local hardware store. It even has a valve so i can open and close it.
:)
Mulder 04-06-2004, 07:38 PM The above mentioned solutions will work, or you can buy a cheap suction pump from the local parts store.
Asinine 04-06-2004, 07:41 PM I thought that's why the bottles came with those long, thin tips... that won't do it?
I've seen some of those bottles. If you have already purchased your oil, just laydown behind the car and try it out before you start eh?
Remember that once you've drained the oil, you don't want to find out you can't do the fill. Unless you have another vehicle to go get something to make it work ;)
Hank3 04-07-2004, 02:16 PM I used a big fat syringe :)

no.:D
jlevy 04-08-2004, 03:27 AM The spout on the Redline bottle is usually pretty skinny. I just put the spout in the fill hole and squeezed the bottle. Eventually it ended up rolled up like a tube o' toothpaste.
Don't ask me why I later switched to Amsoil with that huge spout...

edit for my usual spelling errors.
garie 04-08-2004, 11:17 PM i used mobil 1 synthetic...and the long spout works fine.

ronaldwrx 04-08-2004, 11:54 PM mobil 1 bottle worked for me too. i just jammed it up between the sway bar and the body in the spare tire well and it filled up no prob .. some sort of fluid transfer device (syringe, pump, etc) would work just fine and require less patience ..
esteve 04-09-2004, 01:46 AM A suction pump would work great too. It looks like a giant syringe with a hose and it comes in real handy, it's good to have around. Any auto parts store has them.
