View Full Version : Where to get a clutch alignment tool?
fragment 04-06-2004, 07:18 PM I'm going to be installing my 6 speed with STi clutch and flywheel next week. I need a clutch alignment tool, and I don't know where to get one. The local dealer says that they don't have any extra, and the parts guy said there was no way to order one:confused:
The dealer also said I could rent one or get a generic one:confused:
I thought the tool was specific to the clutch input shaft and pilot bearing. Anyone have any ideas?

joeyd02 04-08-2004, 01:29 AM They usually come with a clutch kit. I changed mine with an ACT and it came with a tool, so did the Excedy OEM kit
PHATsuby 04-08-2004, 06:52 AM fragment-sorry to butt in here, but since you are currently doing it.
are you using your stock tranny crossmember, starter motor and clutch slave and master cylinders with this swap?
i am trying to find out what wrx parts i can use if i need to.
thanks
Ben
fragment 04-08-2004, 12:39 PM I'm going to be using the crossmember / starter / slave that came with my new tranny. Mostly just because they are low milage, and I've already got about 60,000 miles. I don't see any reason why the stock parts wouldn't work though.

just not too sure which one we need. Anyone know the spline measurements for a stock 2002 WRX 5 speed????
joeyd02 04-12-2004, 08:10 PM I aint sure if you have a Checker Auto Parts near you, but they lent me an alignment tool this past weekend. It cost 17 bucks , but they give it all back when you return the tool.

No, but I can bring in my stock clutch while it is out and find out what fits...
cky211 06-28-2006, 11:00 PM I just did what must have been my 7th WRX motor install. DO NOT go cheap on the clutch alignment tool or you will fight with bolting the motor to the transmission. I want a Subaru only tool to align it fast. I came up with a way to do it & it takes a little extra time but the motor put itself onto the tranny after I did a small turn of the crank shaft.
Here's my tip. Will only apply to a used fly wheel. I used a borrowed Snap On clutch alignment tool to do this because it was wobbly.
Also I did it by myself. I used the alignment tool to hold clutch while I slowly tightened the clutch cover bolts. I only tightened them enough so the clutch wouldn't move on its own then I looked closely all the way around the edge and carefully adjusted the clutch side to side and up & down until it was in the shiny friction portion of the fly wheel. taking the time to do this made for the easiest motor install I've done to date.
The Snap On tool just didn't want to work with the Subaru but with all the extra movement it had I used that to my advantage. Yes it did come with the right size adapter but the cone you slide on the shaft and use to center the clutch just didn't want to work.
My original clutch alignment tool which came from Shucks or Napa I tried to use it and when I was done I decided to spin it and it was very clear there was a problem. Turns out the threads for the adapter piece are off set.
I want the Subaru special tool or something that works I don't care about other cars since I don't like to work on anything else, for me only Subaru. :D
Dave_Clark 06-30-2006, 11:43 AM The plastic tools that come with the clutch kits work fine but my favorite alignment tool is one I made by cutting the input shaft off a broken gearset. (Got plenty of those.) Then I welded a handle on the end. Nothing works better as an alignment tool than the actual part you are trying to align.
gimmewar 06-30-2006, 04:39 PM That's what I used on mine as well Dave_clark, subie dealership had an extra laying around.

fragment 07-14-2006, 08:24 PM Wow, my OP finally got answered; kinda. Good thing I didn't wait :)
Just for the completness factor; I got my clutch aligned by eye. Seriously, I just looked through the splines till everything look centered then I tightened it up. The shaft slid in just fine.
