View Full Version : Good Water Injection setup ??

Once I get my car back from the body shop I'll have a week or so to get the water injection install finished before I got to get tuned at TurboXS in Maryland. I have a 2003 WRX, with a VF22, header/uppipe, turboback, APS DR500 FMIC, APS CAI, Denso IK22s, STi Injectors and Walbro fuel pump...amongs many many other mods. I just want to verify my setup and get some ideas for tuning to give to nathan at TXS.

http://www.wrxtuner.com/default.asp?subCategory=11&vendor_id=47&subCategoryName=Engine&categoryName=Performance&vendorName=J&N_Performance

Thats the Water Injection kit I have. I have the pump mounted already, and I tapped the washer resivoir a little high looking back, but I think it should work. Anyways, I also have a Water Level sensor they sent me. They said its a micropressure sensor that I tapped into my resevoir and it has electrical leads on it. I also bought a generic VDO pressure gauge that reads 0-150psi to put inbetween the solenoid and the pump to verify any clogs, etc. I have two switches in my car - 1, to control power to the pump, and 2- to control power to the solenoid. Building a circuit, I can make it so I have 2 blinking LEDs and a buzzer so that I can know when I'm misting water, when the resevoir is too low, and it'll buzz if I have the power to the solenoid on AND the water's too low. How's this sounds??

Also, I was going to tap the nozzle about 2" from the throttle body on the fmic pipe there. I have also tapped a Intake Air temp sensor for one of my other gauges there too.

Any ideas, comments, concerns are all appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are you using the UTEC spare solenoid signal to set your parameters of mist/no mist? It sorta sounded like you will be manually throwing two switches... just checking.

You are going to be spraying a lot of water. Depending on your switch parameters (if using UTEC) you can be over watering at low rpms.

I'm on a vf-30 running a setup that sprays ~3gal/min. I'm not getting enought water into the intake at 5-7K, but I am not loosing anything down low. You might see a power loss or some misfires at lower rpms.

I have been playing with a staged injection setup in my head so I'm not stuck in on or off.

Phil at TXS said that if I switch to a larger nozzel, I can lean out the fuel and advance the timing a couple of degrees.

Without doing that addition, I got 30hp and 23 ft/lbs out of my WI setup above the TXS Stage4 with tune, so I was happy. You should be as well.

Just keep in mind that if you are running 20lbs of boost or so, you are only injecting at around 80-90 PSI of water. With a nozzel as big as you are using and at that medium water pressure, you might not be getting the full 5gal/hr... just a thought. I would really like to see what your water pressure gauge reads when you have that in.

As far as nozzel placement, we are withing an inch of eachother.

If you are interested in more, e-mailo me and I'll give you the maps I got tuned with and my little additions for you to look at.

Nice thanks very much for the help!! The manual switchs are only there to have master ON/OFF's for the pump and the solenoid. They UTEC spare solenoid will be used. On april 30th, I have an appointment with TurboXS at 10AM. I'd like to meet up with you too if you want, because your location is close to there.

Can you send me some pictures of your setup?

Thanks again!

Hey Mike,

We met at a UNYSOC meet last winter, I'm Josh's friend from the Naval Academy...just wondering how everything worked out for you since this whole setup came along.....what were your numbers, tuning issues, success stories?

thanks a bunch

yea my update is that turboxs said that my turbo isn't functioning correctly :( They said that it will peak at 19psi but only holds 14-15 to redline (it drops to that). So, we decided to save me money and not tune the water injection. Now, that I am pretty much completely out of money, I have to work at paying my bills back, and then I'm going to put a 18G or so in there, or just start on my engine project.

Also, I am considering taking out the water injection and using a small shot of nitrous instead. Either way, I wouldn't be using water injector nor nitrous in an autox or track day, so nitrous would be a little better for getting points at the shows I'll be going to.

Although, I may give the water injection a shot, I just don't like where the pump was mounted, because I can't fit a better battery there, hehe.

Tim- how's it going man? Are you planning a trip up any time soon? Let me know. Get my AIM name from josh :)

Oh, and after all of that....I can't launch the car to save my life, so I'm running like 13.292 @ 104.5, 5-6 mph off where I should be, and half a second off as well... :(

Damn, but I'm not going to lie...I've heard that same thing about vf22's from several people, some of them just don't hold boost for some reason.

As far as visiting...I'm sure I'll be driving up some time this semester after my car gets fixed, we'll meet at the ricer-friendly parking lots up by the crossgates mall.

Yes, because the wastegate spring is too weak. The fix costs less than a dollar. Before you go out and spend a grand on a new turbo, check out my post here:

I gained 5psi at redline and went from 4.3v to 4.6v MAFS in the same conditions (From the UTEC log).
