For those of you using the RS tranny and an EJ20 motor, which turbo are you running? Do the shorter gears greatly effect your choice, or not so much because you still have the EJ20 redline. And question two is, when doing the swap do you suggest getting the EJ20 to run first and then take the extra time to add aftermarket parts, or is it simple enough to add aftermarket boltons while doing the swap? Thanks

Doing STi mounts and the up pipe/dp are lots easier with the engine out, from what I gather.
I was going to run the RS tranny, but not having to worry about gear breakage was important to me...and the RA gears work well in the RS tranny.

2002 USDM EJ20 with Vishnu uppipe, TXS turbo back with Prodive muffler, Samco hoses from airbox to I/C, STi injectors, ECUtec and VF30 (as soon as I get it) on a stock RS trans...  OMG is it fast.

Stock TD04 with a gutted uppipe, Scooby Sport DP and stromung back box. I'm running the goupe N motor mounts. I have a 9.5 lb Fidanza flywheel mated to the stock RS gear box. The ECM has been Ecuteked and my limiter has been raised to 7500 RPM's which I do hit frequently while autocrossing. My swap is just plain old sick.

We like to use as many stock pieces in a conversion as possible inc. the tiny Td04.
We do this for a few reasons:
1. If any CELS occur in the initial start-up, then they become easier to track down using stock parts.
2. We like to get all the vehicles CA smogged. It is much easier passing smog with all stock parts rather than aftermarket ones:)
Simple things to add on prior to start up that will not make a smog difference:
1. up pipe with egt
2. STi mounts
3. Aftermarket clutch and flywheel

thanks everyone for your posts. I'll refrase my first question now that i know these things. In choosing an aftermarket turbo does the RS tranny and gears effect your choice? Or is it still similar to w/ the WRX tranny ie. 18g=all around crazy power, VF22=slower spool high power, VF34=fast spool decent power. Do the gears effect the spool time, or amount of time that you have peak power on high hp turbos?

RS/T's don't have lag, even with an EJ20... they're lighter and geared a lot shorter. Stock turbo = full boost at about 2400 RPM.
