Does anyone have direct knowledge/experiece with the compatibility in fitment of a WRX spec alternator into other model suburus... specifically Legacy?

Searched w/ little results...

Thanks in advance!

I dont know that much, but there are a couple things to think about when interchanging alternators.

1. How much is the alternator putting out compared to your stock alternator?

2. Compare the plugs on both the wiring harnesses and the alternators.

I have a 90 Legacy that blew the motor and I was parting out. I tried to swap the alternators w/ my 93 Impreza but stopped in my tracks. The Legacy has a plug that is round, and the one on my Impreza is more of a rectangle. So if the plugs match up, then all you have to think about is the power rating.

I know that a 2001 RS alternator and a 2002 WRX alternator are identical in every way, even the part number on the casting.

Outback alternator puts out more amps than a stock WRX alternator I wanted to find out if they are interchageable.

Anyone know?

I don't think so or everyone would be putting 2.5 alternators in their WRXs.

Good luck finding one at any store other than a dealer.

Try the vendors like East Coast Subaru and Kingpin. They import the Ver 7-8 engines for part out and you can get an JDM 90amp alternator for like $80. I did it for my rex and now going to get another for my 03 Outback

Does anyone know if a 98 Forester alternator will fit a 03 WRX. My friend has one from her 98, that has been rewound to put out 90A (maybe more). and I was wondering if I could swap them.

thanks in advance for any help.

It shouldn't... (Someone will correct me if I am wrong here, but) the way I understand it, the amp rating is the amount of power the alternator can put out, not the amount of power that the alternator will put out.

For instance, I bought a 200 amp (about 2x more output than stock) alternator for my Explorer when I had a 2400 watt stereo system in it. Later, I removed the system but kept the same alternator... Nothing blew up.

THat is why you have a voltage regulator  ;)
