is it possible to put a forester xt motor into an 02 RS?? how much am i looking at? (sorry for the newbness) wat is drive by wire or watever the forester xt motor has? does it make everything more difficult? and finally..probably a stupid question...is it legal assuming that i dont do anything to the motor, maybe just catback exhaust.

Yes, it will bolt up, but you need the ECU and wiring harness from the Forester to make it work.

Drive-by-wire is a electrical servo that actuates the throttle rather than a cable. The servo is connected to the gas pedal via a wire (and accelerometer switch). All of this needs to be swapped from the Forester to your car.

You will probably spend more building the motor, parts and labor, then getting a EJ255. You can go with aftermarket ECU (link, TEC, Hydra, motec), but they probably won't support the AVCS.

wat happens if the ecu doesn't support the avcs? does the engine run bad, or is it a ej25t w/o avcs?

It doesn't run as well without it as with it (like duh), but it won't run horrible (or be poor performing). Basically it's like a EJ255 without some of the lower torque. I suppose it's not so bad in the EJ255 as it is in the EJ207

i have been mulling the idea of ripping out my swap and puttin in a FXT swap
if i could find a complete car i woudl do it
