View Full Version : ideas on speakers/advice
scoobydrew06 04-22-2004, 10:37 PM Right now i have stock speakers and a pretty big sub enclosure in the trunk. Well the enclosure weighs about 70 lbs so it has to go.
I don't want to sacrafice all my bass though.
Can a moderatley priced 6.5 speaker give a decent kick?
i don't really know much about the speaker world right now, but i was thinking about boston acoustics?
(i listen to pretty much everything besides rap. So i don't need mega bass. But some deep drumming from rage needs to be present)
redwagon 04-23-2004, 01:07 AM 6.5" speakers in the doors? I'm looking for a solution like that myself, but it's not easy when there's so little depth in the doors. If you're willing to go to pods, or enclosures under the seats you could fit some shallow 8" midbass drivers and be
What do you have for a sub amp btw? Maybe you could swap out the 70lb box for say a single 10" in a smaller box? A couple of 8's IB in the parcel shelf?
nadebac 04-23-2004, 01:16 AM check out http://www.iaperformance.com/ as far as the door speakers are concerned. haven't ordered anything yet, so I can't personally recommend them or anything.
the problem with anything under the seats is that it can cause problems with backseat foot space. Also, there are heating vents under there... that can't be very good it. (I know the stock sub is there so maybe there is no poblem with these is applied correctly)

Change rear passengers, or let them walk ;)

Not in my GF there aren't. Mind you, it's in the 30's (C) most of the year, so who needs a heater anyway? ;)
Back Road Runner 04-23-2004, 02:15 AM You're probably not going to get the bass you want from just 6.5" drivers. There are some good midbass drivers, but you can't reproduce what a 12" sub can play. That's not physically possible.
First off, list your current audio setup: head unit, front and rear speakers, amps to those speakers, sub, and amp to the sub. List brands, models, and numbers. I want to know exactly what you're running first. It's tough to tell how to change it if I don't know where you're coming from.
So far, you mentioned stock speakers, so I know that. What about the rest?
ProdriveRex 04-23-2004, 11:50 AM yea, i know what you talking about... i took out both of my 12's. i have polks DX the older ones... (good ones :) ) and just happy with performance of 6 1/2 front and 5 1/4 back Polk speakers... they produse nice midbass... i listen to Trance and DNB. and still sound good...
CalcVictim 04-23-2004, 12:32 PM Go to crutchfield and see which speakers hit the lowest frequency, probably Kicker and Kenwood. Write down the model numbers and find them locally to listen to. After you hear decide on which ones.

If only it were that simple. One, the vendors lie. Two, the drivers that really do go waaay down low don't fit in our doors without major mods.
Some drivers that might fit behind the panels with a little cutting of metal/spacing are the Morel MCW8 and DSL Iridium 8's. Both go low with authority, but aren't cheap.

Have you seen the Morel HCW6.5's? Play down to 40 hz I think and are only 2.36 inches deep. $499 a pair though when I called about them. (Thats only for the woofers)

redwagon 04-23-2004, 02:42 PM ... and when the 8's are not much more money and still go in the depth... why bother?
scoobydrew06 04-25-2004, 02:10 PM for some reason i wasn't subscribed to my own thread so i didn't know anyone replied.
my current setup is stock speakers. Some pioneer head unit that is about 3 years old (mosfet 45 x 4). two 12" 400 watt pioneer subs (don't know the model but they are pretty cheap, and probably 5 years old). 300 X 2 watt Legacy amp (some ghetto thing I bought at the bayside expo center).
My setup is pretty ghetto right now but for the amount of money i paid for it all i think the bass sounds pretty good. Now I keep the bass turned all the way down on my head unit, and I keep my bass boost all the way down on the amp. When i turn it up it is way too powerful for the type of music i listen to.
I could deal with like a 8" sub or maybe even a 10" if it is light enough. But i was hoping i could get a decent kick out of speakers.
impreza_speed 04-25-2004, 05:07 PM i have a 95 impreza and i put infinity 6 1/2 components in the doors and 6 1/2 coaxals in the rear deck, when i throw a movie in it shakes the seats and i have no subs and im running off the amp that came with the clarion dvd player.i used to do car audio so im real picky about what i use i can send you pics if you want to see the imstall .
