View Full Version : Press Release: SOA One Lap of America 2004 Forester XT

Subaru of Plano
04-22-2004, 11:38 PM
Subaru of America Central Region has teamed up with the premier Subaru tuning tompany in America, COBB Tuning in sponsoring the Car and Driver One Lap of America Forester XT.

This mildly tuned version of the 2004 Subaru Forester XT is sponsored by: Subaru of America CTR, COBB Tuning, SPT.Subaru.com, Hotsubaru.com, ModernArmor.com, Silkolene, Tektronix, Subaru of Dallas and Vehicles in Motion.

The Forester XT will compete in the most grueling and intense race series on the North American continent. The Team will cover 5,628 miles, nine tracks, and ten events to include: skidpad, road racing, and drag racing! All of this will be done in nine days.

The goal of this effort is to show that with the right modifications, a mildly tuned Forester XT can be a formidable track car while also proving to be a comfortable daily driver. Quoting Team Captain Fleming, “The new Forester XT is a fantastic platform to improve on, though it has been a challenge to prepare due to the short timeframe and the use of a relatively new drivetrain. The competition is fierce this year and we look forward to showing that performance options for Subaru vehicles don’t simply end with the WRX and STI.”

The Driver Team will consist of Chris Fleming, Andre Vandenberg, and John Holmes.

The Team Captain Chris Fleming is an accomplished SCCA Solo 2/ProSolo driver/instructor and best know to the Subaru world as the owner/driver of the famed “Conebasher”. Chris will be sharing the Road race and skidpad duties with Andre Vandenberg.

Andre Vandenberg is an accomplished driver/Motorcycle racer having competed in numerous road races, endurance races and SCCA Solo1&2 competition.

John Holmes is the team’s drag race specialist and transit driver. John has campaigned many drag cars and has recently started road racing his WRX.

The team also needs to thank Keith Verges of Apex Driving School for allowing us access to Motor Sports Ranch!

This team will face not only the Iron Man of car racing, but also a strong field of competitors. Many of the competitors have competed in this event multiple times in the same vehicles. Many competitors prep all year for this event. Our team has had about three months to prepare and are anxious to show what we can do!

Subaru of Dallas wishes them all the best as we know they will do their best!

The Schedule is as follows:
Friday, April 30, Tire Rack HQ; South Bend, IN -- Wet Skid Pad Shootout

Saturday, May 1, Heartland Park; Topeka, KS -- 2 Time Trials

Sunday, May 2, Pikes Peak International Raceway; Fountain, CO -- 2 Time Trials

Sweet car! Reminds me of the Subaru of Gwinnett Forester from last year, except theirs was black with gold 17" superleggeras...even had a STi intercooler on it at the time.

I definitely agree on the Cayenne... :D

I planned on running my forester xt also in the 2004 One lap with my Forester XT

JIC coilovers
STI turbo & TMIC
3" Turbo Back
Carbotech Brakes
But I could not come up with the entrance fee even though I signed up and then I lost my co-driver which I have back again. Anybody want to help with the entrance fee I would be happy to accept. :-)

Find some sponsors! Check with any vendors that you think might want some advertising and tell them why you are doing it. You're a rolling billboard for thousands of miles of highway and a number of tracks. It's worth it to them! :)

Ummm the event starts next week... are they even taking entries this late in the game?

Sadly, no Cayennes in the entry list.

Competiton looks like:

Dodge Ram 1500
Chevy S10
Dodge SRT-5 Sprinter and a
Buick Ranier CXL

Should be interesting, can the lightweight Forester out-handle the more powerful V8 competition.

I've heard the "SRT-5 Sprinter" entry is actually going to be the 500 hp Viper V-10 powered SRT-10 truck.

The sprinter is the new tall MB truck (little UPS truck) that dodge is selling as a replacement for the ram van.

The Dodge Ram is a contender for an overall win this year... It almost happened with the same truck a couple years ago...

The driver of the "sprinter" put a Neon in 8th place overall last year, and it may be able to beat the Ram...

Make sure there is a digital camcorder in the Subie, we've got an STi lined up, but need a camera in the SUV class...

I'm in Topeka right now (that's where I work) and it looks like rain right now. They say rain today and tomorrow but Saturday looks like this so far:

------

Saturday:
Cool. Partly sunny. Highs in the upper 50s. North winds 15 to 20 mph.

-------

At least it will be cool, good for the turbo :)

This is however Kansas and the weather changes so quick it's not funny.

Yeah it should be open. I'll be at Road America this Friday to take some pictures.

Wow that EVO in mid-pri sedan was the #1 fastest drag car, 12.179...guess it's not stock. Under further investigation, it's the Vishnu EVO. It doesn't have the stock turbo and is over 500hp. I would guess unless it breaks (which there is a decent chance of) the STIs won't be able to catch up.

Peaty,

Great to have you there! Thanks for the stop watch. I sure everyone is wondering about the 13.48 and the Chevy out front.

I told the track crew I was going to stage deep (to mess with the non-drag folks). They said I could stage however I want. Well I do it and the track guy backs me up and the tree comes down and I am in reverse!!! The car has way more than a 13.48 in it. I did a 3k launch. Shifted between 6-6.5k.

I am said to report that I went out in the third round due to a red light! This was my first time draging this car and like a dumb (fill in term). I wanted to try a new launch!! Not smart.

The EVO is impressive and well driven. We lost 7 cars yesterday. I was easy on the car because we want to finish.

Sears Point questions?? Hotel close to the track???? A good one.

Also anyone coming to Sears we need some towels to take showers if you feel like helping out. I know I would not want to let three ugly guys use my towels!!!

Thanks!!!

A friend of mine works at Sears Point and we helped him move out there. Your best bet for hotels is probably going to be staying in Vallejo. It's only about a 15 minute drive to Infineon (sears point) from there. Just don't stay at Motel 6 in Vallejo, it's a dump. :) We stayed at Holiday Inn-Marine World in Vallejo and it's maybe a 20 minute drive to Sears Point and very nice. Chances are it's booked solid most of the summer though.

His time on the wet skid pad seemed to totally suck? Too much power? It has pushed the Evo way down the OA results.

I thought the scoring would be interesting -- it is an event where you want to make sure you don't outright suck at any single race.

Word has it that the diffs were locking and binding, not good on a wet 200ft skid pad.

Update: Borrowed a strut from somebody at the track spectating! On the road to CA.

BIG THANKS for the strut!!!

Adee broke a drive shaft in the dodge racetruck and got a dns/dnf on the first time trial at ppir, but got it working again for the second session.

The Forester should be second in class after ppir #1 and possibly #2 - results not posted yet, but the car is on the way to CA!!!

Keep those fingers crossed!

hi... im logging in from my wireless internet phone on the way to sears pt. FWIW our evo did terribly on the wet skidpad due to the tight front and rear diffs we need to use for good corner exit on the road and track. it basically behaved like a live axle on the wet at low speed (30 to 40mph). on the track though, its doing well. we came in first and third overall at the two races at heartland park. first overall at the ET drag race. and fourth and third overall today at pikes peak. the biggest competition right now is coming from the porsche and viper factory racing efforts. its funny seeing a silly red evo staging with the three big dogs :) still lots more abuse to go so keeping the fingers crossed. we are running her harder than we want but after that miserable wet circle jerk event, I don't have much of a choice :(

I didn't realize that the XT broke a strut but Im glad to see them back in the mix! :)

Mid Price

All Blake and Peter have to do is keep coming in second to the monster EVO and they'll tie for mid-price sedan. But since the EVO will have more wins, they'll get the go - ahead. You can't make a mistake, and the EVO made 2 in the skid pad and the bracket drag. That allowed the STi to get up by 60 points. If Blake and Peter can beat the EVO just once, it's theirs. I think the STi will do it. (remember, it's possible for the EVO to beat the STi in overall, but still lose in class).

SUV

The 1500 died. The SRT-10 is factory dodge, not tweaked to the max, so it will probably last the whole event. I think the XT will end up second.

Post PPIR, the COBB XT is tied for second in class - Adee's race truck is back in business. The XT was 14th overall - with a borrowed strut they found and put it between session one and two!

SUV Standings (http://www.onelapofamerica.com/History/2004/results/OVL_CL09.HTM)

Fuller's WRX is solidly 1st in class to the Shiv EVO

if Adee didnt run, then the FXT is gauranteed to be at least 2nd in the SUV class, and in the top 15 overall

also top 3 amongst Subarus :D

There were two EVOs entered, the Vishnu one and another that was pretty much stock. The Vishnu EVO ran 4th overall at Sears Point. My friend Nic (who works for Stasis Engineering) said the other EVO flipped on turn 8 at Sears Point, hence the DNF. :(

They received some a set of STi Springs, AGX struts, with Cusco Camber plates this morning in Vegas.

I was called in the middle of studying for this week's finals on Sunday afternoon to get these things assembled and shipped to Sears Point..... they decided to get them shipped to Vegas instead...

They got them this morning... and good that they did too! The driver's side front strut went out also! Good thing I sent both! :D

That was actually the original set up of for the Forester, and it worked very well. A smoother ride than a hard core track set up, and the ability to tighten things up for track usage. We currently offer a kit with the kyb's and the springs, with stock strut top mounts. Stock strut tops, only because I have recently set up our Cusco account and we are still setting up Cusco into our inventory including adding the proper information on HOT SUBARU. I would be happy to speak more about it including prices if your interested at a later time just PM me.

Adee is back, he just skipped 2000 miles of driving for the Sonoma event. The XT is now tied for second in class and 15th overall.

Anybody going to Pueblo tomorrow wish Chris a happy birthday! :D

If you look at the front there is even a scoop on the trailer. I looked in there mostly food and stuff :)

It's a really big charcoal barbeque for the pre-race tailgate parties...

Didn't know that. Thats doing good then. What do they have off the car?

I'm thinking of trying to hit up a lot of sponsors for 05 One Lap. If I do go again, I want to have at least a shot at the overall win ;)

Anyone else think it's funny that they're "THE" Firestones and they're using Bridgestone RE-070's?

I just realized they figured out how to get around the "2 extra tire" rule.

Next year we can run 4 shaved MXs down to 4/32's and then have a full tread set. 2 on a trailer, 2 in the trunk!

-Tom
I guess there are always ways out in an event with "no rules"

I knew there was somthing fishy about re070s on a trailer.

Didn't they mark tires this year at tech as well as inspect for the brand put on by Tire Rack at purchase?

http://onelapofamerica.com/FAQ/FAQ.htm

What tires are legal?
All tires must conform to the tire policy posted for the specific year. All tires must come from Tire Rack with the required markings to insure compliance and keep teams from changing tires mid-event.

What do I do in case a tire fails during the event?
If a tire fails during the event, a team must inform One Lap officials of the change and provide verifiable justification for the replacement. Failures due to too much negative camber, for example, are not considered reasons for replacement. Any teams found changing tires without proper notification and reason will be disqualified. If a change is necessary, it is strongly suggested that the failed tire be retained until an official can see it.

Tire policy:

http://onelapofamerica.com/WhatsNew/WhatsNew0071.htm

n order to assure that all tires are standard street legal tires as sold by their manufacturers to the general public; all participants will be required to purchase the tires they use during the April 30th through May 8th event directly from The Tire Rack. The 2004 One Lap of America tires will have unique identification permanently branded to their sidewall to clearly identify their origin. Vehicles will not be allowed to participate in the event unless their tires have the required identification branding.

That is the same policy as last year.

You can swap tires to your spares, the "changing tire" thing they are talking about is if you have to replace tires during the middle of the event with something NOT Tire Rack certified. Having them on the trailer just allows you 4 spares instead of only 2. Original idea was to have a full set of shaved and 2 full treads to go on the front in case it rains. Having two extra on the trailer allows you to have a full set of rains.

Edit: doh! This year they instituded a "8/32s at the beginning" rule that wasn't there last year. Looks like you could only shave the MXs a tiny bit :)

I'm not sure the STIs that are running have a whole lot done to them power wise, I wouldn't expect them to compete for overall wins with some of the other cars entered. I also don't think the Praxis suspension is a race suspension by any means, they are just using one lap as an advertising vehicle for the suspension and brand. The Fullers know how to drive and I think that's why they are doing so well.

Tire shaving is not permitted and all tires, including spare tires, must begin the event with a minimum of 8/32-inch tread depth (to be confirmed during pre-event vehicle inspection) ..
http://www.onelapofamerica.com/WhatsNew/WhatsNew0071.htm

The same set of tires will be used throughout the event unless changes are deemed necessary for safety reasons by the organizers.
http://www.onelapofamerica.com/Forms/rules2004.doc

So to summarize... You're allowed to bring six tires with you. No shaving. Seems that rotating amongst the six tires is allowed although I know for a fact that Wayne and I were quoting phrases from the rules earlier this year that insinuated only 4 of the 6 tires were to be used on the car throughout the race. I'm wondering if they changed the rules or if I wa just imagining things in my overworked frame of mind.

Hmm looks like they figured out whatever was wrong with that Ram 1500, it's flying now. Looks like the SoD FXT placed 21st and 15th in the two Pueblo time trials and is in 3rd right now in the SUV class. I'd expect things to stay that way unless either of the top 2 in that class break.

The Fullers are still ahead of the EVO overall and in class but they need to hang with them and beat them at one event to come in first in class. They weren't very far behind the EVO today in the time trials and are probably down a substantial amount of HP.

Other way around. Bridgestone (Japan) owns Firestone (USA). Andrew and Adam have no involvement in Firstone Tires. This event is a PR stunt. They're usually busy running and promoting their wine business, but Bridgestone and their subsidiary Praxis apparently gave them an offer they couldn't refuse.

Went to road america today but I caught the tail end of things in the afternoon. I did catch the FXT running in the afternoon and snapped a couple pictures. Andrew Firestone was running as well and his day didn't go as well. :( This happened at turn 5 about 2 minutes after I got there. He was fine, probably just a bruised ego.

There was a SoA rep there with them though and he didn't seem very happy. :)

The Fullers are running the White Praxxis STi (wingless). They say all it has on it is a catback... but I saw them fiddling with something near the floorboard, probably some sort of engine management.

I talked with them at Hallett, and they were saying that it was "stock", just lightened a little, yeah right. I saw it pulling out of "the bitch" on the afternoon run, and he lit off all four tires as he was pulling for traction at about 60 mph. I don't know of any "stock" car that can break four tires loose in a straight line at 60 mph. The car was flying, and it wasn't just driving skill as he would like everyone to believe.

BOY! That was the most fun i've had with my clothes on in a LOOOOONG time!!

Thanks to all you suby guys and gals for the support, and espcially to the RS driver and his family and friends in Pikes peak. (Soory I forgot your name...... old age and lots of excitement will do that). If it wasn't for them, we could not have completed the event. It is not just ANY enthusiast that will let a complete stranger strip the front end of their car and canibalise parts off of it for a race car that you could possibly never see again. THANKS a Bunch!!

I promised Belinda we will do it again next year, and this time she will be going with, so, we are commited for another onelap next year, this time we are going for a top ten and first in class
