View Full Version : Can a 5MT tranny be mated to the H6-3.0 engine?
Mike Wevrick 04-24-2004, 11:57 PM This is totally pie-in-the-sky but I'm thinking I might someday buy the upcoming 7-pass. Subie. It's expected to be H6/AT only, no MT:( So how hard would it be to swap the trannies? (assume that the basic layout is the same as the current H6 Outbacks)
Kostamojen 04-25-2004, 01:39 AM Mike, you obviously missed the whole anders8 h6 swap thing :p
Mike Wevrick 04-25-2004, 10:17 AM Yeah, I did; I just started thinking about this. link?
What else is there to it? How do you deal with the clutch, shifter, etc?
Mike Wevrick 04-25-2004, 10:29 AM Never mind; I found the anders threads. cool!
So the engine will mate to the tranny, but what about the back of the tranny where it connects to the rest of the drivetrain?
Kostamojen 04-25-2004, 10:11 PM You mean to the driveshaft and rear dif? Or something else?
Mike Wevrick 04-25-2004, 11:05 PM Yeah; I guess. I don't really know much about this ...

Whatever final drive ratio you want, you'd need a rear differential(probably LSD) to match it. Then you'd need compatible hubs and axles. There's a few threads on the more specific details involved in this. Look for the ones about swapping differentials (R160 or R180).
Mike Wevrick 04-26-2004, 09:40 AM Why can't I keep whatever differential etc. are on the car to begin with? Or do I have to change it only if I want to change the final drive ratio?

You need to remember that one of the differentials is inside the automatic transmission you're removing. So, you would need to make sure that the ratio of the new transmission (for the front) will work with the ratio of the rear diff.
Anders, the dude with the H6-manual.
Mike Wevrick 04-26-2004, 10:51 AM Aha, thanks ... very cool car btw.

Yeah, I'm always surprised when these qestions come up... but in a happy way. :)
I was checking my web logs... i've seen my stuff linked from canadian discussions, german places, other sube places (i-club, 25rs, xt6,...) and all the way down to Australia through MRTs discussion forums...

Mike Wevrick 04-27-2004, 12:12 AM I don't usually check this forum; just got thinking about this idea ...
Kha0S 04-28-2004, 01:13 PM The only thing I can think of offhand is that the ECU might not have a pin to make it think it's on an MT (that is, since there's no MT version of the EZ30, the code won't even be in the ECU)... so you might be faced with CELs as the ECU attempts to find the TCU.
Beyond that, though, I'd imagine that the mechanicals will work just fine, though, depending on the gearbox, you might need the driveshaft modified by a driveline shop to match the lengths.
