View Full Version : ye olde spring rate query
lukerussell 04-27-2004, 10:27 AM JIC flta2-rs w/ race damper. On STi. For track mostly, i'm not a big autocrosser. I'm a thinkin 8 kg/mm front, 7 kg/mm back (448 lb/in and 392 lb/in).
I know a bunch of you wrx guys run stiffer springs in the back, but I think the difference can be made up with the dccd all the way back and if that don't work, a big fat rear sway bar.
Opinions from those smarter than me, please.
luke
trhoppe 04-27-2004, 10:43 AM Yup.
With the STi I don't think you need the higher rear rate because of the diff.
Just my opinion though from driving miranda's STi.
You can always throw the 10Ks on the rear if you don't like the way the car handles.
-Tom
not smarter.....
MNbiker 04-27-2004, 10:54 AM Personally, I'd go with even F/R rates. I believe that's what JIC typically recommends, when you get custom rates for track use. I'd probably go with 9K/9K, unless you're doing a lot of street driving.

lukerussell 04-27-2004, 11:36 AM i'm thinking the 8/7 might be a little wimpy. how come coilovers for the evo are always around 600lbs? the sti was actually tail happy when i did an autocross. but at sebring, it pushed like a pig all day long. i like the 9/9 idea.

I agree 100% with this as well. You won't be able to put power down as efficiently with a rear biased setup in my opinion.

jmott 04-27-2004, 12:00 PM The bigger/faster the turn, the less you should understeer anyway.
edit: this seems not to agree with your experience though, strange

lukerussell 04-27-2004, 12:14 PM i think it was tail happy on the autocross course because i was on the stock springs. there is so much body roll that it would snap from side to side in a slalom and break the rear loose.
on a race track you don't have those sudden transitions, so it just pushed.
luke
power to the rear. that's why i was originally doing 8/7, but temporarily forgot when i said 9/9. i think i'm now at 9/8.
trhoppe 04-27-2004, 12:24 PM Sweet thing about the WRX/STi is that it can take the same length springs all around.
Pick up the JICs with a set of 8K,9K, and 10K. Then you can swap to your hearts content until you get a setup that works well.
Go with 9/8 first. If the car works well but you feel like you need more spring, 10/9. If you need more oversteer 9/10. REALLY need oversteer? 8/10.....Car too loose with 9/8? 10/9 ;) Possibilities are endless......

zzyzx 04-27-2004, 05:09 PM As they say, loose cars are fast cars - how fast do you want to go? :alien:

Note - standard 2.5" ID springs will fit on the JIC's just fine, so you can buy Hypercoil or Eibach ERS springs and save big $, versus what JIC charges. Note #2 - My JIC's use 8" springs on all 4 corners. However, I believe the new long-stroke rears use a longer spring in back, which would make spring swapping a bit more difficult.
-Steve
p.s. I'm using Hypercoils:D

That blows! Since they are height and preload seperate adjustments, can you just adjust the same height spring on the front to work right??
-Tom
jcroy66 04-27-2004, 10:48 PM The new JICs on our living room floor have 8" springs front and rear but we ordered them with helpers at both ends, 1.6" in the front and 2.1" in the rear. And after looking at the prices of JIC vs. Eibach springs if we decide to change rates I doubt we'll buy the JIC springs.

-Tom You can put an 8 inch on the rear without changing the ride height but you will loose some shock travel.

Don't they say the same thing about women?
I agree with Tom's idea of 8k/9k/10k as far as a flexible setup, although if you're doing the helper springs then...
lo-buck 04-29-2004, 10:08 PM what tire do you plan to use? i think that would effect how stiff you go on spring rates (at least a little bit) as well as how much street driving the car would see and how stiff you can stand on the street. i would go with somehting along the lines of 10k/9k if you want to keep some understeer in the car.
-spenc....thinking 10/12 would be fun in an autocross car.

I think that would be a little excessive in the rear for an sti. Doesnt look like it would need anything greater then even spring rates to rotate.
trojan9x 04-30-2004, 09:36 AM If/when you order your struts, the part number will tell you if you have the longer travel struts or not.
you probably have the KRA-08A in front and KRA-16A in the rear. They reccomend the 225mm springs for, unless you use the 200mm springs with helpers. JIC's 225mm springs are limited though in terms of available spring rates. Don't know if Eibach has a similar length spring with higher rates available.
My RS came with the 08B fronts and 16B rears which have a shorter strut travel. I'm looking into getting them upgraded to the A's
trojan9x 04-30-2004, 09:48 AM also, where online can I see the coil springs for eibach to use on coilovers?

Where would you find the model number on the units? They are at home and I'm at work so I can't search all over for the model number so if you can say where the model number is it might save me some time.
If you Google "Eibach Race Springs" you'll come up with hundreds of sites that sell them and you can get more information on them. Only thing is that Eibach's actual site uses a goofball database system that does not appear to actually work so you'll probably want to look at one of the many sites that sell them.
trojan9x 04-30-2004, 10:40 AM On the strut, the part number is right below where the piston comes out of the strut. Shouldn't be that hard to find.
trojan9x 04-30-2004, 11:40 AM here is a nice page for the hypercoil springs
http://www.eshocks.com/hyp_ind.asp?Subgroup=2%2E5+ID&Free_Length=8
and here is one for eibach springs

lukerussell 04-30-2004, 04:21 PM i went with 9/9. i think that will give me what i'm looking for. if not, new springs are just $40 away at eshocks.com . what a deal. thanks mnbiker for showing me the hypercoil light.

Luke,
What suspension do you have that you can change the springs on it for $40?

Any coilover that takes 2.5x8 inch springs. I think he has the jics but there are others you can do the same thing on.
trojan9x 04-30-2004, 04:59 PM the ones i see there are 55.00 for that size
lukerussell 04-30-2004, 05:00 PM JIC FLTA2-RS. They're 2.5" I.D. 8" long. Many coilovers use the same spring. I think JIC charges $80 - $100 per spring, but you can get Hypercoils (they make NASCAR, CARTand IRL springs, so they're good) for around $40 - $50. Check out www.eshocks.com or www.hypercoils.com .
Luke
edit: they are $55, i was going off memory. my fault. anyway i swear i saw them for $40 something somewhere. that is per spring, not set. i'm just messing up all over the place today. anyway, it will be easier to order than trying to get some sent over from Japan.

Pretty sure all of that is per spring not for a set.
lukerussell 04-30-2004, 05:07 PM you're right afpdl, see edit.
afpdl 04-30-2004, 05:09 PM You can get them for 48.99 from pitstopracer.com
If anyone wants some 550lb springs NIB pm me.

don't you mean PitStopUSA (http://www.pitstopusa.com)?
Link to springs (http://www.pitstopusa.com/shocks_springs.htm), and it's $48.88, I just saved you people eleven cents per spring!!
edit: $48.88 for both Eibach and Hypercoil, there's some that are $38.88 that are called Suspension Spring (don't know who that is) but only go up to 450 lb/in (or at least what PitStopUSA stocks).
trojan9x 04-30-2004, 05:41 PM i see them up to 850lb there
