View Full Version : Best ST tire size for STi
del105 04-27-2004, 01:10 PM Forget the 245/45/17, they are what I want but they rub.
Here are my options in kumho mx
235/45YR17 9/32nds tread width 9.4" overall 25.5"
245/40YR17 9/32nds tread width 9.9" overall 24.8"
What tire is fastAr on the Sti?
afpdl 04-27-2004, 01:51 PM I would go with the 245/40/17s. Im sticking with 245/45/17s myself.

Are you sure they'll rub? Meaning have you tried it? What wheel size and offset?
Besides that... if you are determined to get the mxs then get these... 245/40YR17 9/32nds tread width 9.9" overall 24.8"

del105 04-27-2004, 03:24 PM The 245/45/17 will technically fit but I will need to raise my car up 1/2 in. and re-corner balance, and I just don't have time before saturday. The 245/45/17 actually have less tread width than the 245/40/17 with the 235/45/17 being slightly less than both. The reason I'm even considering the 235/45/17 is for the gearing. It should add a couple of mph to the top of 2nd. What do you guys think?

I think you will be better off geared lower in 3rd. The advantage of the 245/45/17 is its an azeni size;)

mounted? I would imagine that the lower aspect ratio would pull the edges in a bit on a 7.5" wide wheel, forget my statement if you have 8" wide wheels.

I probably didn't mention that this is a strictly auto-x car, and I barely ever hit third gear. I think 3-4 more mph in 2nd would keep me from shifting on the faster courses. You think I could get 3-4mph with a inch more tire?
245/45-17s are a larger diameter than the 225/45-17s. Moving toi a 245/45-17 would increase grearing and slow you down off the line.
If you want same rolling diameter, then the 245/40s would be the tires you'd want.
Watkinsm3 04-27-2004, 04:10 PM Since I've had my STi I've only done one event where I didn't hit 3rd gear (I was all over the rev limiter though). I tend to agree with the idea of having shorter gearing to make 3rd more useful. It might also limit the need for me to immediately drop down to second for the next turn/manuever.
I'm on 255/40-17 v700s (not a street tire!) whatever that means to you guys...

EDIT : Only 1 of the 6 events I've done so far this year with the STi has not required me to go to 3rd...
afpdl 04-27-2004, 04:10 PM Mine isnt a strictly autox car but it gets autoxed alot. With 245/45/17 victoracers I have to go to 3rd at least once(or ride the rev limiter in 2nd for a few secs.) in about 3 out of 4 autoxs and every so often I will have to use 3rd for most of the run. Maybe the courses are faster down here.

I would agree with that, we run on Nationals style courses every month, and half the time it's designed by a multi-nationals course designer (Roger Johnson).
You read that KC? Come on down to H-Town!!
:D

I also had to spend a good amount of time in 3rd in austin(not a nationals style course:mad: ) and almost all of the bmw events.
del105 04-27-2004, 04:37 PM I guess I could run most of the Atlanta courses in 3rd but then I'd have to shift like 4-5 times during a run. For me I think I would actually lose more time shifting than just popping off the rev limiter every once in a while.
afpdl 04-27-2004, 04:43 PM if your just popping off the rev limiter every now and then, no you dont need to shift. The courses im talking about i get up over 60mph by a decent bit (one case crossed the line up near 80 according to the speedo) if I didnt use 3rd on some of these coursed I would just be coasting half the run.
