I have an Outback sport with 2500 on the clock. I jumped in the car to go home last night and the brakes were all mushy. Felt like it had air in the line and I had to pump them a little. This morning they were fine. I can only think that it was the heat, the car was parked out in Buena Park CA all day and it was a hot one. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Get the dealer to check it out, my 2000 RS had the master cylinder go out at 4,000 miles! Not fun doing 65mph and trying to stop with no brakes!

Mike Martin (00'RS) drove my RS this weekend and asked me what I did to my brakes. He thought mine were firmer. He said his felt as you describe soft. I thought perhaps they changed something. Mine is a 99"

Oddly I have been feeling the same tihng in my 00' RS. I even had the brakes bled but it is still there. My Subaru Tech freind thinks that some of the components of the brake capliper need to be lubed and that they are sticking. Says he does it all the time in the shop and it cures the problem. I'm going to try it in a couple weeks (read right after I graduate!)

Never been super mushy though.

I don't know about ours being better than Honda's brakes. Ours is a two stage brake system which I don't like. I prefer the old single stage brake system. I get more feedback. That's just me.

You gotta stomp harder on the single stage boosters though, and insurance companies' research showed that many folks involved in accidents just didn't put their foot down hard enough.

So now we get this low-effort, spongy 2 stage booster.

Grade-A Subaru in the UK. $400 later I had STI 4 Pot brakes. They sent me everything. I got hte calipers, rotors, brake pads and the brake lines. Now to get Rallispec to get me a sincle stage booster.

The UK board. Everything is cheaper assuming it's not big enough to have huge shipping charges.

For example, several people have gotten STI IV or V suspension from UK users upgrading for less than $600 shipped.

The STi 16" wheels (98-99 RS) hold their value a little better though.

Plus you have to find a seller that's willing to go through the trouble of sending it overseas, and you probably have to pay in advance and trust in that seller to come through. (I sure wouldn't send anything over to the UK without pre-pay!)

The brakes on MY00 suck. The other day I was only doing about 30 and was about to just brake hard to make a turn although my brakes didnt want to. The ABS kicke in and the car just kept going thought i was going to hit another car. In previous cars 97 civic and 98 GTi VR6 this definitely would not have been a hard task. I think its time for a Porsche brake upgrade or something. ABS is definitely to sensitive in my car. Seems like it kicks on all the time.

Yeah the brakes bothered me too, mushy, soft etc. So i upgraded to the STI 4 pots and the new mastercylinder and single booster.

2000 RS with 4000 miles. The brakes are feeling weaker by the day. It doesn't feel like the same car that I bought now. Brakes are VERY weak. I really have to stand on them in an emergency braking procedure. Disappointed that they've done this to me. In the first 200 miles, they were the best brakes I'd ever felt.

Not sure about how to fit them but some guy on the UK board is selling his brakes off of his P1. 600 Pounds for them. Oh you can get things from Grade-A Subaru over the phone using your Visa card. I started getting parts from the UK a while back when most companies in the US wanted way too much for their stuff. I got my suspension and brakes from the UK off of the UK message board. Haven't had any glitches so far.
