Anyone ever run, or running them now? Anyone know if they have a filter size for the Impreza?? Likes, Dislikes? Thanx...

I found one to fit my wife's Legacy Outback at the local autozone. The filter casing seemed very strong and it has a nut type fitting on the end. Nice if you have a difficult spot to get to I guess but I find that Subaru's are very easy to change the oil so no real benefit there. In the end I think it's just too costly to justfy since I change the oil every 3K miles anyway. I stick with WIX filters. I can get 2 for the same price as one K&N.

Unfortunately WIX filters are worse than FRAM etc. Try Amsoil. You can buy them right off the web. I have been using them for a few months now and they seem to keep the oil looking clean longer.

I had one on my RS and would not recomend it! The oil takes like 8 seconds after startup to circulate (you could tell this because the oil light kept on after all the others went out, and the sound)

I am back with stock (Purolator) NE1 running the Mobil 1 filters?

I use K&N oil filters. HP-1006 for a MY99 2.5 RS. They have a pressure resistance of 550 psi, and from what I understand subaru's can spike to around 320 psi at startup, possibly popping other filters (like fram).

Delectron - Do you know if that part number would be the same on a 2000?

BrianR: I don't know, but it's very likely the same.

Not all Fram are junk, I purchased the Fram double filter, which has teflon in it, adn I noticed a slight difference on startup. They are something like $10, but i think they're worth it.

I love the k&n oil filters, the only thing that I've noticed from the bulletin board is that someone gave you the wrong number to use, its th hp-1004 not the 1006, I got this directly from the parts book. And another person wrote that they used the double guard filter from fram BIG MISTAKE, teflon is one the worst things you can put onto your engine, it burns into a solid black mass over time. I've seen teste that prove it. I would recommend the k&n filter to everyone only because its k&n, they make the best filters in the world. Its the only filter with the 1 inch nut so you can take it off easy and it has an extremely high burst point, another very good feature. Well I hope this helps

Actually Wix filters are made by the same company that make the OEM Purolator filters for our Subarus, Valvoline, some NAPA filters, and some others that I can't recall now ( I think possibly AC's as well). Fram filters are crap. I have ripped apart most brands of filters to look at the internal design and the filtration system. FRAM and pennsoil filter are identical. I would only run wix or Purolator filter on my Sube. FRAM filters are Wal-Mart junk. The filter paper in FRAM filters are inferior and they don't have the pressure valve that is customary on the WIX and OEM filters...

3M reccomends against using teflon products in an internal combustion engine. FRAM is crap! Ever cut one open? CARDBOARD end caps!!! Paper element that CRUMBLES in your fingers. The only fram filter that is well built it the Tough guard. Uses good metal end caps and a metal and nitrite rubber pressure valve.

Well, here goes nuttin...

After buying a $10 Mobil1 oil filter and $25 worth of Mobil1, I get home, remove the old filter, drain the oil, and let her drip for about 20 minutes.

Put in the drain plug, reach for my fantastic new Mobil1 FILTER and it wont screw on. !!!

The cross referrence for this filter is wrong and the threads are smaller than required.

So, Im home alone. No oil in the car, no filter for the car. Hmmm, do I put that old filter back on and fill up with my $25 OIL???

Caled sis, had her go and pick me up another filter, she calls me back, "they only have FRAM" Im like @#$%, well ok, just get me one.

She gets back, and she told me they only sold the highest of three grades of oil filter for the Subaru. I looked at it, its was a great filter. Used it and am happy with the Quality of FRAM.

Moral of the story, buy a $2.79 FRAM filter, get a piece of shizznitt.

Buy a $9.79 FRAM filter and get quite a respectable unit.

Buy a filter from a company that jsut started making (selling) them? Good luck.

Although the marketing department at Mobil1 did a wonderous job.

Thats my story of a 3hr oil change.

I would say that the AC delco filters are a heck of alot better than the Fram Filters. A autozone had a bunch cut open to look at, and it was the only $2 filter with metal endcaps. (didn't have a Purolator cut open though). the others with metal endcaps were the $10 Mobil 1 and the $10 K&N. Also from my experiance with my SHO DO NOT GET A FRAM EVER. The test the filter to 2 GPM at some low ass PSI. Hmm the SHO puts out 2GPM at a moderate pressure at 2,000RPM. Turns out a SHO owning Fram engineer did more tests and found out they go into full bypass quickly after the 2GPM. Also I have had problems with the Filter medium colapsing in the Fram filters due to high oil pressure and a slightly dirty filter.

Go with what you are most comfortable.
And
report back your results for the club database. Currently I believe that there is at least one other person who (dared) to use a FRAM filter on his car which subsequently leaked (burst?). Car lived to tell the tale...

General consensus is that Teflon does not belong in the oil lines of our automobiles.

Champion Labs (makers of Mobil1 filters) claim none of the current filters fit our cars. And will not be held liable for any damage caused by "misapplication" of their product.

Side note: Alex, I-club suggestion, we need to create a product use/don't use database...

For a conventional pleated paper filter you can't go wrong with AC Delco.
For a synthetic fiber type try a Bosch 3310.
