Irvine Subaru 04-29-2004, 01:42 PM U gotta come see the changes, in this car they are great. The interior is changed with alot small things to make up a completely new design. They new grey is called crystal silver metalic, not as dark as first thought but very nice. The badges are different as well as an added rear side splat over the rear fender well. Get down here as soon as possible, you will be very pleased. Jeff

Pics rarely capture a car's true colour. You need to see it up close in natural light to really get a feel for the colour.
Irvine Subaru 04-29-2004, 03:14 PM As far as I know the obsidean black is going to be a real black with no colored metalics in the clear coat. Jeff

Yeah, generally the 'Pearl' denotes a metallic flake of some kind.

stimied 04-29-2004, 04:01 PM Hey Jeff,
Could you please snap a few pics of the seats? In some shots I see bits and pieces of the seats and they seem a tad bit different. I'm very curious if Subaru tightened them up a bit over the '04's.
Thank you,
-Kip
Ghostrider600 04-29-2004, 04:02 PM I wish it (CG) was a BIT darker, more graphite...but still, at least I can now NOT get silver so Me & Her don't have 2 Silver Subies. ;)
Irvine Subaru 04-29-2004, 04:09 PM Yes I'll get pics of the seats but I have to correct myself on the color name. Its called " grey crystal metalic" sorry about the mistake, and I'll be right back on the seats. Jeff

palpullero 04-29-2004, 04:20 PM Hey Irvine Sub:
Does the new '05 STi come with the svelte key (you know, the sharp looking "I own an STi, can't you see by the looks of my key?" key)? Since the '05 comes with the immobilizer, and thus an RFID chip on the key, this might not standard anymore. I say so because of this picture:

Great pics by the way, thanks for posting them!
-Matt
Irvine Subaru 04-29-2004, 09:52 PM Because as long as they have a vin on the car it can be done. As far as insurance rates go who knows I dont sell insurance. Jeff
STiMULi 04-29-2004, 11:46 PM I spoke with Progressive tonight and they said until there are enough produced they will provide insurance based on the 2004 rates plus the percentage of price increase.

Revised rear suspension (see pics, not sure exactly what)

Revised steering
Wider wheels (17x8)
Wider tires (235s?)
Differentials??
Better be something, the Evo RS and MR need competition.

No change in tires, same 225, but they friggin changed the damn bolt patter.
Can somone explain to me why Subaru would do that? are there any performance gains by doing so?
or is it just more manufactures make that bolt pattern?
i am keeping my 04, and waiting for the 06

I can only assume that with a wider diameter bolt pattern, you increase rigidity of the wheel between the road and the car, thereby enhancing road feel and stability. I think this is an area many reviewers were complaining about. Hopefully with a new steering rack and rear suspension setup it will be a much improved experience.
As for the wider rims with the same size tires. I'm sure a wider rim will also provide a more rigid connection to the road than the 17x7.5's did, at least with the same width tire.

What is suppose to be so great about the '06? I'm going to bet they don't change the body significantly as to keep the Imprezza imagine alive now that their marketing campain is so successful.
It's even less likely that there will be any engine changes as the 2.5's for most models are very recent.
Irvine Subaru 04-30-2004, 01:31 PM Here we go... First the EVO..cough ( GSX ECLIPSE ) is not going to be competition untill they go bigger on there motor. Anyone with an STI who has ever raced an EVO will tell you the EVO's are not what they are cracked up to be. As for the questions, the suspension changes... Alum. rear controll arms ( see pics ), Wider stance because of wider rims, The tires are still the same but the rim should be able to fit a 245 series tire:banana: . The wing is still not an option and personaly I doubt it ever will be, mainly aside from being huge it really works. Anything that needs 17 bolts to hold it down definetly makes down force, this car is subaru's race baby and all functional things will probably stay unless they are improved or modified. Jeff
baltik 04-30-2004, 01:40 PM thanks!
that leaves just:
steering rack/spring rates/struts

Anything that needs 17 bolts to hold it down definetly makes down force, this car is subaru's race baby and all functional things will probably stay unless they are improved or modified. Jeff
Thanks Jeff!
do you know if the rear control arms will fit a 04?
:D
palpullero 04-30-2004, 01:48 PM Jeff:
Could you please check into the YAW sensor for the DCCD? Is there one now or not? We would appreciate it. BTW, THANK YOU very much forthe pictures and info! Thanks.
BlueRex28 04-30-2004, 01:50 PM also check into the helical LSD - I heard it was gettign that as well.
Irvine Subaru 04-30-2004, 01:59 PM Struts and springs as far as I can tell are the same, but they are painted black now instead of red. Its says the steering rack now is a close ratio rack if its any closer thats anyones guess untill its tested. My guess is the handleing of the car will be better do to the wider stance and the allum controllarms, and the air difusers.
Irvine Subaru 04-30-2004, 02:03 PM No yaw sensor as I'm aware of , and the Lsd lools to be the same. Jeff

Joking aside, this is to everyone, I went down to Irvine Subaru last night to check out every details on the 05' STi up close. Jeff is by far the nicest, coolest, most knowledgeable car sales person I have ever come across, and that include exotic car dealer sales guys (a Lamborghini salesman actually tells me the Gallardo come from the factory twin turbocharged  ). Simply because Jeff is also a hardcore car guys, he is into it just as much as we are. He stayed 2 hours longer then he is actually suppose to get off work just to entertain me last night (thanks so much again!!). So if you are close by and need a Subaru, buy it from Jeff, I am sure your buying experience would be very enjoyable.
Put it this way, Jeff knows ALMOST as much as I do about the STi, which is a lot............... kidding kidding :D

Irvine Subaru 04-30-2004, 02:58 PM I'm guessing because we were told the rest of the line will be converting to 5x114 as well. There are way more options for aftermarket wheels as well in this pattern. Plus the new wheels are wider and look to have a little more space between the brakes and the rim.
Irvine Subaru 04-30-2004, 02:59 PM 1 big thing ADDICT found was the ABS module on the 05's is allot larger than on the 04's.

Good news for the SVX guys....
The hubs, see the wheels and how stubby they look, seem to be bigger too so that would also help explain the change. And the front diff is different... 2 different sources have said it now. Too bad no one knows to what.

hmmm they still use the same master cyl? Thats one of the major problems with subaru and brake feel. That damn 2 stage booster. Subaru ABS has always had much suck... maybe they fixed that too.
stimied 04-30-2004, 03:12 PM Hey Jeff- do you have any way of determining the new Curb Weight? I wonder if it has changed at all from 3263lbs. It should be listed somewhere in the paperwork, inside door panel, manual, etc., right?

I would think just for the STi... its got different hubs, axles and all.
Irvine Subaru 04-30-2004, 03:45 PM I expect them to but who knows untill there here. As far as the curb weight... Inside the door on the metal tag from fuji it states the GVWR/PNBV is 4145 lbs. Its the exact same on the 04 STI as well so it looks like they both weigh the same. Jeff
Schlad 04-30-2004, 04:09 PM I was just at Irvine Subaru this morning to get that throttle clip put on. The bad news was it took way too much time, but the good news was that I got to sit in the silver 05 STi and chatted with Jeff and Ken. It's cool how Jeff gets to sit at a desk in the showroom with his computer following this thread.
What was even better was that he fired up that modified 04 STi that is in the showroom to investigate this steering ratio question. We saw that both the 04 and the 05 takes one and one third to get to full lock. Jeff, thinking about it, I think that test was legit. The only way the wheel could sweep faster is if the 05 had non-linear steering- for which I don't believe that's the case.
The sound system in the 05 is good. I wouldn't say it's great. But who's buying a STi for the radio?
The center console looks great. I like the curves. ;)
Overall, it had very nice subtle changes...

They should weight the same, the only changes that effect weight are:
1/2" wider wheels + weight
rear aluminum lateral arms - weight
under body plastic diffuser + weight
bigger hub + weight
Rear quarter panel flair plastic trim piece + weight
Rear quarter panel trimmed out - weight
bigger rear bumper cover + weight
radio/6 disks changer, 4 speakers + weight
so all the things probably cancel out.

To me, they feel "EXACTLY" the same sitting in it. The shape of the seat is "EXACTLY" the same as the 04'. I really hope they tighten the side bolster too like the JDM seats. They didn't, it is still the same old, huge USDM seats :( The only differences on the 05' seats are the side bolster are now black instead of blue, and the black fabric on both the side/legs bolster are slightly different.

yup, same here. I can't lose the height adjustment on the left seat. Seems like the only way is to get the EDM seats, but then no one knows if the EDM seats are the same as the JDM seats and getting the EDM seats here will cost a lot more then JDM seats since no body import them.

palpullero 05-02-2004, 10:49 AM Oh yes, the time has come. I remember buying my 2002 WRX sport wagon almost 2 years ago, and I was very excited. Of course, that was before SOA announced that the STi would come to our shores 6 months later. Now I am ready to ge the car I wanted from the beginning, but couldn't get in the US. I know that the versions that will come afterwards will probably have more HP and redesigned bodies, but well, I can't be buying or leasing a car every year (God only knows I wish I could). Now that I have seen the full picture of the STi, I don't mind the fender flares on the rear that much; I think it makes it very unique. For all of you gearing up to get an STi: good luck and our time has come!

I am wondering if you have Invoice pricing yet. My dealership has not been able to establish anything but the retail price of the '05 STI. Perhaps this is just a ploy but I have not seen any invoice prices mentioned anywhere.
Before you say what's the point because I'll be paying Invoice, I assure you that won't be the case as their are 4 very competitive dealers here that have no problem knocking a few bucks to make a deal. That being said, they tell me they don't know what it is they can sell it for yet because of this.
If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Motor is not the only thing that makes for competition, especially when a lot of curves and transitions are involved. At least it appears Subaru has taken some steps to improve the STi's handling. I drove an Evo before buying an STi. The Evo IMHO is a much better driver's car with it's great stock handling, tighter seats, sharp and responsive steering, and inspired confidence. I chose the STi over the Evo for power and looks. It only handles marginally less well and looks great when the wing and scoop are removed.

Agreed. However, I don't want to this to become a wing vs wingless thread.
Swap the trunk lid, springs, and locks with a WRX or buy a CF lid. There are are too many holes in the lid to try to fill in. I swapped trunk lids (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=400124)

Yeah, generally the 'Pearl' denotes a metallic flake of some kind.
No, mica indicates a metallic flake. Pearl means that it gets a extra kind of shiney last paint coat.

As far as I know yes... UPDATE: the obsidean black does have a color in the metalic, its very mild but there is def one there. Get ready for this it has WRB metalic in the clear coat on the obsidean black. It looks really good in my humble opinion, Jeff.
Not to mention my 'Black Diamond Pearl' car which has metallic flakes as well.
Irvine Subaru 05-04-2004, 05:29 PM K here goes, The invoice is... yea right, do you know how much trouble I would get in;) . As far as the color of the lights in the dash, the guages are the same as the 04's, but the radio is the same color green as the dig. clock. As for the question about the colors, they are... Obsidean Black, Crystal Grey, silver, white, and blue, the later 3 are the same ones as last years STI. Hope this helps, Jeff.
metoo 05-04-2004, 06:25 PM Can I trade the PSM and steering wheel from my car with Crystal Grey and steering wheel from one of the cars in your stock? :D
Irvine Subaru 05-04-2004, 06:47 PM No prob, but it'll be 33,185 plus tax, tag, and title. Jeff:lol:
paperchasin 05-04-2004, 07:01 PM ^^Hey Jeff...i have only begun to follow the STi craze this year, but what can i expect as far as pricing goes on the 05's...i kno u mentioned MSRP for people on this board, but how long after the release of the 04 STi's was it before invoice price was "released" and how long was it till dealers began budging on the prices?? Do you think that this trend is applicable to the 05's as well?? Sorry, i kno its kinda like a history question...

haha.....you are asking a car sales guy when the prices would go down?
Good luck man
Irvine Subaru 05-04-2004, 09:30 PM Hey JDM thats a little below the belt, I think I can answer this question very well... Here goes. Here is the thing, last year the dealerships in southern cali started discounting early in the year. The STI sold out here 1.5 months early, so my guess is that you will see dealerships holding onto markups as well a msrp a little longer this year. If there's a few extra at the end so be-it, then you can discount them... But then again this is just an educated guess, I could be totaly wrong. Jeff
STEALTH-WRX 05-04-2004, 09:31 PM yeah, what jeff said.
v10m5 05-04-2004, 09:39 PM charging more than MSRP (i.e. markup) is what's below the belt -->not saying that you do that, Jeff, but those salesmen in Oahu who do take advantage of a product especially a Subaru, are only looking at the short-term.
Irvine Subaru 05-04-2004, 10:14 PM I understand both sides to this... You have to understand when 85percent of the time salesman are forced by the internet and other dealer competition to lower the price on normal cars so much that they make next to nothing. So now that Subaru has a car that is worth markup they try to do just that. If the STI came to the US in 04 with 3500 units and they stickered them at 36,000 from the factory they would still sell out. What I dont get is this, jewlery has about a 50 to 60 percent profit margin and so does electric equipment ( stereo's and speakers ). On any givin subaru there is only 2,000 to 2,500) in profit for the salesman between msrp and the invoice price, they do not get paid on holdback or any other dealer incentives. The average salesman gets 25 percent of the total profit margin you can see why they will try to mark them up. For every 1000 off of the car they lose 250.00 out of there pockets. With american cars its way different they can discount 5000 and still have another 3000 profit, thats why you see adds with 8000 off on trucks and mustangs. In the end the price usually comes down due to the market and the customers get what they want. But evryone knows the price's get better at the end of the year, but there are people who want to be the first to have something. So in the end... If you dont want to pay markup then dont, you can wait untill the price goes down or you can deal with Higher ups ( me, or fleet dept.) but when you come in and deal with a salesman dont automatically hate the guy, he's just trying to make a living just like you are. Jeff
TimStevens 05-04-2004, 10:15 PM Translation: expect a markup ;)
I hear that if you were to build a car from GM that costs 10k new ( I assume this was a cavelier) that it would cost approximately 80k through their parts department. Maybe thats why markups arn't always necessary.
v10m5 05-04-2004, 11:03 PM no worries Jeff, i don’t hate you, much less automatically hate salesmen for jacking up the price of an in demand auto! :D
i totally empathize with you and i'm sure that it is quite a hard and stressful living to be a car salesmen, im sure you deal with loads of rude people daily and I’m sure it’s hard to make a steady profit. i still don't agree with the markup thing but it’s the salesman’s prerogative to make that choice and i’m patient, i waited till i could get a nice deal on an e46 M3 and i'll surely wait till i can get an '05 STi at MSRP or below. it's how i do business, i find that patience equates to money in my pocket!
thanks again for all your info and keeping us informed on the '05 updates.

 uh huh....
But on a productive note, I am disapointed that the spoiler delete is not available, and that steering is not improved...I had also heard that "new colors" were available...one color, and just a darker silver at that?
New wheel style etc, would have been nice as well...
and BTW...gold wheels are TITE!

not to point fingers at anyone, but keep in mind that in-demand cars arn't the only cars that salesmen sell. And not everyone they sell to are the brightest when it comes to buying cars.
paperchasin 05-05-2004, 12:31 AM Thanks for the reply Jeff....i guess my hunt for an 04 continues...It just sucks cuz the depreciation of the car does not take into account the markup due to demand or wutever the reason for the markup is...i understand that u guys gotta make a living...but a 2% markup on an STi is still more money than a 60% markup on jewelry or a dish washer...anyway, ur last comments were accurate...that there are people that are willing to pay for the markup prices and thats why dealers do it...

drees 05-05-2004, 04:25 AM Look at all the nifty aero parts on the new STi. Got the nice smooth trays leading down each side of the car, along with those little air diffusers in front of the tires. I wonder if any of those parts transfer to the older WRX/STi?

ThatGuyInCali 05-05-2004, 04:33 AM So Jeff...
Is it accurate that your dealership and the others who have received 05 STis, were part of a dealer PRE-allocation because of strong WRX/STi sales last year? When do you think the other dealerships will receive their first allocation?
Also, what's the PDI time on an STi?
Thanks!
Matt
Irvine Subaru 05-05-2004, 01:27 PM I'm pretty sure your right on the first statement, we usually do get more cars in general than anyone in socal. As far as PDI time, that just depends on how busy service is... What happens is the cars will be washed, filled w/ gas, then they sit and wait for a mechanic to free up, service customers get taken care of first. So it could be any where from 40 min on up. Jeff
Irvine Subaru 05-05-2004, 01:32 PM One more thing... I just wanted to thank you all, for understanding where I was coming from with the mark ups. I'm not saying I condone them but I understand them. In fact the reason why I run the performance dept. now is because the money I'd make selling cars was very eratic. Mainly because I would give away the car just to put somebody in a subaru because I know how good the car is. So I guess thats why I respect both sides, Anyways thanks Jeff.
Castor Troy 05-05-2004, 04:11 PM Anyone know long the '04s will still be available?
Irvine Subaru 05-05-2004, 04:29 PM We sold out over a month ago, But we do have one used one that was traded in with 1700 miles on it. Let me know if anybody is interested. Jeff
