tmat3 04-30-2001, 06:24 PM You're correct. We (I'm Japanese) call those stars, "Subaru". That's why you see stars on the Subaru rally car.

ivbdn 04-30-2001, 09:47 PM Beautiful pic. I've never seen it before.
Seeing StaRS 04-30-2001, 10:46 PM Woah, kinda like my name.....
At least it looks nice...
maybe its my eyes.. but i see more than 6 stars http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif
6 stars in the cluster.
Actually, technially, there are thousands!
But you can actually see 7 of them with the unaided eye, hence "The Seven Sisters" or the "Seven Pleiads". But in order to see that seventh one, the conditions have to be just right, because it's relative brightness is rather faint, so when you do see the Subaru, you more commonly see 6 of the 7 sisters. And so that is why there are 6 starts on the emblem....
Of note...
on the lower left of the pic, you'll see 2 rather bright stars, those are said to be Atlas and Pleione, the parents of the 7 Pleiads. Each star has a name:
Merope, Electra, Maia, Alcyone, Taygeta, Asterope, Calaeno.
Of those, I chose to name my RS Alcyone, or "Aly" for short-she is the brightest star!

Skipilot has got it down man!
One reason I got a wagon was to carry around my big old telescope - hope this doesn't make me too much a geek. Also, there is a Native American myth about the Pleiades that involves Devils Tower in Wyoming (Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind). There are some great curvy roads near Devils Tower too - could it be just a coincidence?

Jewbaru 05-01-2001, 10:15 AM hey, that reminds me, when playing Sega GT, they call the SVX the Alcyone. cool http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
ChimChim 05-01-2001, 12:22 PM I think it maybe something like a mystical bird too, but I could be wrong.
Sanguine 05-01-2001, 12:23 PM 6 letters in SUBARU
6 stars in the cluster.
It's an acronym
It's not 6 letters in Japanese. Try again.
(I'm not exactly Mr. Japanese, but I believe Subaru is 3 characters in Hiragana <one of the Japanese alphabets. The others are Kanji and Katakana.> Su-Ba-Ru)
RacerinLSL 05-01-2001, 02:23 PM On a clear night, you can see all 7 with the naked eye, so I'm not sure why they only put six on there. I guess the overpopulation of Japan has caused so much polution and too many lights for all 7 to be seen. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gifhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gifhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

Haha! Thanx for the props deke! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif
Yeah, Jewbaru, there was a car in the 80's named "Alcyone" by Subaru, and it was an XT I do believe.

jeffg 05-02-2001, 01:42 AM Is that also why they cut the emblem from 7 stars to 6 stars? Since there are only 6 that are really visible all the time?
Just a thought.
