View Full Version : Mounting A-pillar guage pods and guages
Mike Jerry 02-22-2000, 04:02 PM Cross-post from the STi list:
I bought an A-pillar mount for my RS (a late model Eclipse unit for those interested) and may be putting it on tomorrow.
For those who have installed these: How did you guys run the wiring to the guages? Do you drill into the A-pillar and run them down the inside of the pillar, or just between the guage pod mount and the outside of the pillar?
SteveS 02-22-2000, 05:14 PM Mike ~~ I don't have good enough pictures on my site regarding the A pillar pod mount, but the wires are run under the pillar facing. So yes, you will be drilling some holes to fish the wire through.
A shame, too, because other cars have complete A pillar replacement facings with pods -- take off the stocker, replace with the one with gauge openings.
Mike Jerry 02-24-2000, 10:33 AM Steve,
Thanks for the info! Where exactly did you drill in? Is there a point on the A-pillar where is it hollow? Or did you drill into metal at all? Or did you just go through the plastic facing of the A-pillar?
Also, Where is your J&S Safeguard microphone and CPU unit installed? I want to get mine installed this weekend.
SteveS 02-24-2000, 11:58 AM Mike ~~ I'm cheating a little bit, because I had RalliSpec install the A pillar pod when they tapped and installed the EGT. I'm sure they only drilled through the plastic facing of the stock pillar. The pod that I had purchased was trimmed up since it was just going to be mounted to the stock trim, and not replacing it.
The J&S knock sensor is mounted on top-rear of the engine on the driver side. There are a few open threaded locations that should work though. I don't know if any location is more desirable than any other. The Safeguard unit itself is mounted underneath the driver's seat, and actually underneath the carpeting. There's a small hole in the carpeting which allows access to the dip switches, adjustment knob, and monitor plug. I have the monitor mounted just below the driver side dash vent to the left of the steering wheel. I'm still tweaking the J&S, and I still think it's a little too sensitive, so I'll be turning it back slightly.
Mike Jerry 02-24-2000, 02:35 PM Under the seat, eh? I wouldn't have thought of that one! I was thinking of the glove box for the mounting of mine.
Any tuning tips for the newbie? How do you know when the unit is set too sensitive? Or too INsensitive?
I just got my patch cord from Car Code. I agree with your assesment of the cheapness of the cord/plugs. BUT I can't wait to try it out!
SteveS 02-25-2000, 06:02 AM Tuning tips from me? Yeah, right! http://208.9.184.110/NonCGI/wink.gif
Seriously, though, I found it difficult to tune the J&S without having the optional monitor. To get it started, I just followed the directions sent with the Safeguard itself. I had the car idling, set the sensitivity up high, and started tapping (NOT HARD) on the sensor. The car's idling pitch would change, I would turn back the sensitivity, and try it again. Not very accurate. With the monitor I can actually see when the unit is "working" and right now it works mostly when going transitioning to WOT. Since I've had the monitor it's allowed me to work on the settings a LOT more (not that I've tweaked it a whole hell of a lot).
Mike Jerry 02-25-2000, 08:36 AM At Shiv's wise recommendation I got the dual monitor for mine. So I will definitely be able to tell when its doing what, but I was just wondering if you knew anything I did not.
imprezive 08-25-2000, 03:19 PM what years is the "late model eclipse'?
Mike Jerry 08-25-2000, 03:27 PM What a blast from the past! I couldn't believe I got an email ping on this old thread. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif
A late model DSM is whatever year they changed to the last body style (before they ruined the car with the current Cavalier-like design). I think its MY '96+.
edekker 08-25-2000, 04:28 PM You can also get the gauges mounted in the center console, below the radio.
Here's what I've asked done to mine -

If you want the car look like a sleeper, it's great. People always want to race me - thinking my car's all bark but no bite - until I mash the throttle of course. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif
The look on their faces is priceless. When meters are mounted in plain view I bet half of them wouldn't have even bothered.

stewartg2000 08-26-2000, 01:12 AM you need to remove the a-pillar. and drill through the plastic. i ran the wires all the way down the a-pillar, under the floor mat, behind the stereo, and under the floor mat to the ecu. getting the wires down the a-pillar was the hardest part, put the wires between the door and dash and poke them through with a screwdriver.
thepas 08-26-2000, 09:20 PM I'm most likely going to be doing the same thing, but I'm going with some smaller Autometer guages so they fit a little better.
