I have a MY00 RS and curious about making it rear wheel drive....
I know its possible...is it worth doing...or way to much trouble?
My brothers R/T stratus is faster than my car w/intake,pulley,exhaust,torque chip

Trade it in for a Rustang GT! It will be a whole lot cheaper and less time consuming. Sorry dude, I just don't see the point of taking a car built for AWD and making it into RWD. FrontWD might be a little more feasible. I think on the automatic Imprezas you can pull a fuse and put it into FrontWD. Just a thought.
Cobb Tunning has an Impreza that is rwd you might wanna e-mail them and ask em whats up. http://www.cobbtuning.com/main.html.

Actualy on any Subaru(I think) you can pull a fuse and have FWD.
I know it's possible on the RS/Imp. and not limited to auto...
I was talking to someone last week with a Supercharged RS, tons of work done to this car. He said he pulled the fuse and went FWD for a day. Said that he could burn the front tires like candles, and there was zero torque steer.

"not limited to auto"? How does the fwd fuse affect the mechanical diff in the manual transmission?

I'am not trying to pull any punches here but why in the heck would you want to relegate an RS to rear wheel drive? (Beside smoke the tires) Your Impreza was born with AWD and that is part of what makes it such an awesome car. Don't give it up, build it up...make your RS so powerful it can light-up all four.

Maybe you should check out the Cusco 35/65 Tarmac center differential.

I dont want oversteer...
I dont want a junkstang GT.
I love my subie but...I lose too much power through the 1/4 mile turning all 4 tires...
Rear wheel drive would give me weight transfer that front wheel drives dont get...
Cant spend money on the sube...mmmmm...pro street camaro!(money pit)
And the fuse deal...WONT work w/ a manual tranny
It was only a thought!

Why would you want to drag race an RS? The world's fastest impreza only pulled a shade under 10 sec. in the 1/4 mile. I'm not saying that's not fast or bad a$$ because it is but you want to get rid of the AWD seems kinda weird. You can get much better launched with AWD than you can with 2WD. Just give it a couple hundred more horsies under the hood. It can be done.

Hmmm... this has me thinking. Maybe I'll get a WRX, but then disconnect the Turbocharger.
wait...

It'd be the best way to get rid of the turbo lag though.
to answer your question, (unlike everyone else here), you'd need to replace your center differential with either a welded diff or a machined piece that only sends power to the rear driveshaft. Trey Cobb has them, although I'm sure that any reputable tuner can figure out how to make their own too (and trey doesn't make his own, he gets them from someplace else).
The conversion process is not trivial though. It is easiest done on a lift, where it will probably take about 3-4 hours, but without a lift or air tools, it took me around 6-7 hours by myself. you have to disassemble the rear end of the transmission while it is still in the car to take out the center diff, that's why.
As to why you'd want to go RWD, it's pretty simple. On dry tarmac, the advantages of AWD are almost nullified. RWD cars with equal traction will weigh a little (maybe a lot) less and will get a handling advantage. Just look at the F2 rally cars. They are 2WD and usually beat the AWD WRC cars on tarmac stages. Even the Eiffel race Impreza in Japan is RWD, because it competes in the touring car series there and doesn't need it.
AWD isn't the end-all be-all of all things since sliced bread, essentially. It is the best all-around contender though.
