View Full Version : Carbon Fiber for do-it-yourselfers

We've got carbon fiber plates and sheets for all your do-it-yourself car projects.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/danhurwitz/Products/CFplate.jpg

The plates come in several thicknesses, from 0.2mm to 4mm. Cut them into shapes to make canard spoilers, gauge mounts, badges, engine dress-up bits -- whatever you can imagine!

The 0.2 mm sheets are flexible. Cut them with scissors and stick them wherever you want.

These have been VERY popular and we're now stocking more sizes and higher quantities. There is a worldwide shortage of carbon fiber, and some sizes are out of stock, but we still have a ton stock.

Would it be possible for you to construct door cards from this?

you'd want to lay your own cf for that

For that you'd need a pretty big piece, bigger than anything we stock.

We got a major shipment of this stuff in, so I resurrected the thread.

How much would it take to to do the splitter portion of a 22B spoiler?

You'd probably want to start with something like this:

I meant the top portion of the 22b wing. Sorry

Oh. I don't know; anyone know the dimensions of the top of that wing?

I'll try and measure it this weekend.

these look pretty cool... how flexible is flexable? 90 degree turns flexable? flexable to make into a box? with one sheet? I got a few ideas with these be it'd require a lot of bending and flexing and such.

Hmm. You probably wouldn't want to try making a box. Perhaps a 1/2" radius turn would work.

Do you have any thats not flexible? I want a piece to put where the stereo goes to mount my profec E01 but I think it should be hard like a piece of ABS.

my bad just saw the word flexible and assumed they all were that way. How quick can you ship it out if I bought it on Monday?

Mach V Dan
10-30-2005, 10:36 PM
If it's in stock, it can ship the same day. Some sizes/thicknesses are in stock. Some aren't. Call the shop after 9:30 Monday morning, and we can tell you exactly what's on hand.

Any safety tips for cutting this stuff? Like maybe respiratory and eye protection being really nice ideas?

For the thin sheets, sharp scissors will work fine. For the plates, you'll want to use a saw. A band saw works pretty well. And as mentioned above, avoid breathing the dust. Protect your skin, eyes, and lungs.

If the right bit/cutting tool was used for the thicker plates, would it be better to make precise cuts on a CNC machine? I guess that is what I was leaning more towards on my 1st question, got a hook up and they said to ask you on this. Thanks

Hey, if you have access to it, I'm sure that would work fine. You want a fairly SLOW cutting speed on carbon fiber. Don't want it to burn...
