this is in regard to the heat shielding on the y pipe(exhuast manifold). The borlas dont have any shielding of anysort.. why does our car need it??? and if i took it off would there be any affect on the car at all? That also goes for the rest of the exhuast shielding (which i know is mostly to protect the pipe from debris), but what is my car gonna hit a big ass log on the road or a rock... probably not. ok any info would be appreciated.

thanks,

BeAn,

I'm exactly sure which one you are talking about as it is dark and I don't really feel like crawling under my car. Shield below the exhaust pips are usually to keep high heat radiating down and ignigting dry brush and such. I actually had a car that warned about parking over dry grass as the heat from the catalyst could ignite the grass. I would expect that heat shields under the exhaust would cause no performance or operational problems (just possible fires), heat shields between the exhaust and body protect the materials above it, like your carpets or your feet.

the hotter the x-gust the less scavaging it will have.which means it will flow better.rule of thumb is that you should deffinitly leave the shields on because their is usually insulation in there that helps keep the pipes warm.

warm pipes better flow...............

Story:

A friend of mine had a problem with his heat shield for his header/cat's rattling on his old car. So, he just ripped it off. One day, he parked the car on his parents yard. He was outside drinking with some friends when they noticed smoke coming from under the car. Upon further inspection, they found the heat from the exhaust set the lawn on fire.

Just to add what Jewbaru posted, I do remember a warning in the Subaru manual saying to be careful when parking under grass because the high temperature from the exhaust system can start a fire on the grass!

hahahaha.. thats hella funny, but i just wanted to remove the ones on the header section(off the pipes themselves) thier couldnt be any ill effects from just removing them. so i was gonna do it tommarow, plus i dont park on grass anywear so..

Leave the shielding off but get them "coated" with any of the ceramic coatings...about $150. This will help both keeping things cool in the engine compartment and kewl in the removal of exhaust gas http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif
