Somebody please help me...I've got some money to spend and I want one of these mods before school starts. Should I get an intake system with SAFC (I heard the use of the SAFC ensures that the MAF will not fail) or an exhaust. I have a MY99 5MT...your help is greatly appreciated.

From what i've read, if you use a drop in K&N air filter in the stock air box you shouldn't have to worry about your MAF sensor. With the money you save, buy a nice aftermarket exhaust system. JMO (Just My Opinion).

I believe the MAF in the '99s were blowing due to vibration. You need an AFC to cure a lean run condition in higher RPMs... I would do a panel filter (remove the snorkus) and exhaust... To get the full benefit of either item, you need both. Your engine is basicall a pump... if you can get more air in, you have to be able to get more air out.

BOTH! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif on a more serious note though...I am very pleased with my K&N filter and Stromung exhaust. I don't have the money to be buying new MAF's. I'd stick with the stock intake (take out the silencer, sounds cooler!)

From stock, gain from an intake is about 15hp; gain from an exhuast is 6hp at best. Cost for intake is about $220. Cost for an exhuast is about $385 (for said 6hp gain).
That's $14.67 per hp for an intake, and $64.17 per hp for an exhuast. You get 40% more hp for an intake at 43% less cost.
Add the computer for about $380 (total now $600), and you're still only paying $40 per hp.
Did I mention I'm a Buyer for a large manufacturing company?

And if you take the angle of the dangle and divide by the square of the chair, you get the hypotenuse of the moose. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif

I'm with Chuck! Moose is good eatin'
Seriously though, I agree with the general sentiment. Get the K&N drop in filter and the Stromung exhaust. The gains for the tube type aftermarket intakes haven't really been compared to just the K&N replacement option. A number of people w/MY99's have used the K&N on the first box and removed the second filter all together. There is a gakset you can get (sorry don't know part# or manufacturer) to seal the plenum. We're probably talking $65 or so for both parts.
And then about$500 for a Stromung w/midpipe.
