Hey all, I just got the Minnam intake with an open filter. I have the hoodvent open on nice days out when it's nice and dry, and closed when I washed the car today. I was just wondering, when washing the car, since the vent still has a hole with the water to go through it, if there was a chance water could get to the filter. Oh I covered the filter with a plastic bag today, and when I was done washing it was dry. But I'm wondering if I should have the vent closed when it's raining, or if it's ok to have it open. By the way, I'm running a stainless steel filter a la Blitz. So I'm a little worried about water getting through the filter since it doesn't have foam or cotton to soak up the water. TIA

We have had some members have problems with dirt entering the system using the Blitz filter. So you might have other problems to worry about. YMMV.

Well, I guess to answer my own question...I have the vents blocked off when its raining or looks like it'll rain. I only have 2 bolts holding up the plates, so its quite fast to open/close them. If you have a stock intake system it is ok to have all of the vents and scoop open. A few members are doing that and no problems with rain, car wash, etc..

i leave my vents open all the time and found no problems yet, even in the wet vancouver season. i,m running a minnam intake/w obx cotton filter.i found that it sits just far enouhgt behind the vents to keep it dry.

I leave my scoop open all the time too. The rain does not seem to effect it. I like it cause teh engine bay is noticably cooler.

I've modified my hood scoop plate to let air in but channel out water. I've also have spacers on the front vents that let hot air out but keep rain out too. (I have pics of how I did this but they will not be up till the end of the week) So far it works well. Still when I wash my car I avoid blasting water at those spots and just lightly sprinkle them. I have all the vents open and only experienced one problem. One day we got a massive and violent downpour where the water was coming down in sheets. The car was hit hard with water for about half an hour while parked. It was raining so hard, it actually pelted water through the closed window seals and was dripping down the inside of the windows.

When I drove home that day, for the first three or four minutes of idle I experienced massive fuel starvation as the water was cleared from the air intake. Twice, while accelerating hard, I got fuel starvation around 5.5K RPM. After that, the car drive fine.

So, is it bad? Yes. Does it happen often? No. Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Who knows...my assometer tells me so, but the buttdyno has been known to lie before. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif

Bender - What MY is your Impreza? I have a Minnam intake as well, and it sits right below the vent, that's why I don't leave it open on rainy days. Would like to hear more about your setup

I also have the Minnam pipe, and I leave my vent open all the time(I have the 22B vents). And it doesnt cause any problems at all. Getting the filter wet isnt as big an issue as people make it out today. The only water issue you have to worry about is with hydro-locking your engine. But that would take alot of water. I suppose water could hurt the MAF on a MY99, but I dont have to worry about that. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

I found some thing that works great with letting cool air in the engine compartment.

Open your hood and cut the black weatherstripping on the hood directly over the passenger side headlight.

SPO gave me this tip and said they measured a 30% increase in airflow into the engine compartment.

I did it two days ago and the intake is a little cooler after a spirited ride.

I opened the big scoop completely, used NickCat aluminum spacers to partialy open the two hood side vents, and run this intake

My Weapon-R intake filter sits right under the open vent. I was worried about it being exposed to the rain. After a heavy downpour, I pulled it off and checked for water. Not much actually got into the filter. When driving, almost no water comes in those small side vents. I haven't had any problems yet (only 2,000 miles with this setup).
