View Full Version : need to buy an oil filter.. HELP!
rally123 04-14-2000, 08:46 AM Ok, I did a search on this and I cant figure out what type of filter to buy..
This is what I came up with:
Fram= crap
Mobile One: Doesnt make one that fits
Purolator: OEM stock (but there are two models, one with a paper element, one with a synthetic)
K&N: works but not reccommended
I need to know which filter to purchase and the part number.. Does the OEM stock filter have a paper element or a synthetic.. Which Purolator filter are you guyd running?
Please help!

Volvokiller 04-14-2000, 08:51 AM Hey Mike
Just go to the dealer and get one, they aren't too expensive. I've been running the subaru oem on my car since new.

rally123 04-14-2000, 09:07 AM Im 400 miles over my change and the closest dealer is an hour from my house.. I wont be able to get to the parts department when they are open until next saturday.. (and I commute 150 miles a day) I bought two from subaru when I bought the car, and forgot I used the last one at the last oil change!

Rajah 04-14-2000, 09:07 AM Mobil 1 DOES make one that fits! I have it on my car atm!
The ONLY 2 filters I'd use are:
Mobil 1 #104
Purolator #L14460
gumball 04-14-2000, 09:26 AM Frankly, I don't think its fair to make a blanket assumption that FRAM (Allied Signal)= crap. Their "Toughguard" filters w/ synthetic glass/cellulose medium seem to be pretty good w/ excellent filtration pass efficiencies (and, for $4.50 a great price), though their regular filters are probably so-so. There's a guy who did all kinds of tests on filters at:
http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oilfilterstudy.html#sae
interesting stuff.
NoTreadHead 04-14-2000, 10:29 AM Well, I don't know who I'm disagreeing with,
but I will recommend K&N oil filters. They cost more, thats the only thing bad to say.
kar250c 04-21-2000, 02:30 PM You can by Amsoil off their website and have them shipped to your door. Three at a pop gives good shipping rate. All synthetic components, designed for synthetic oil (I run Mobil 1) Rated high on capacity and size of particles filtered.
P.K. Motorsports 05-18-2000, 04:36 PM Jason - has anyone actually confirmed with Mobil that the 104 is the correct filter for the Impreza, or does it just happen to have the same thread profile?
Need my AWD 05-18-2000, 05:10 PM i really dont think it matter on which oil filter to go with if u change it every 3k miles. But the best purolator is the purolator ONE. then again i have only put mobil 1 in my car so maybe with other oils it matters.
North Ursalia 05-18-2000, 08:18 PM K&N makes wonderful stuff, but I found out the other day that the oil filter for the Imprezas (HP2008 I believe) didn't fit my MY00 RS... yes, it starts to screw on, gets through about two threads, and then stops. Anyone else have this problem, or did the book have a serious typo?
daytonians 05-19-2000, 07:24 AM Does anybody know what number filter is needed for a MY00 ?
Is it the same as Rajah's MY98?
The Mobil1 filter #104 is the filter recomended for the 1.8 & 2.2 Subaru Impreza's up to 1997. One could assume that it works with the newer models. I've used it and it seemed to work fine. I currently use a Bosch oil filter, I believe it is #3012 for the 2000 2.5RS.
Snoopy 05-19-2000, 07:56 AM I don't know about those other oil filters, but Purolator and Mobil 1 makes their oil filters tough enough to withstand the pressure Imprezas put on them. I heard one of the members here got another type of oil filter and it cracked under the pressure. Anyone care to elaborate on this more?

When I spoke with K&N Engineering, they gave me the part number HP-1004. I have ordered this filter for my car, but do not have it on the car yet, so I cannot comment, but it appears you may have the wrong Filter....

Rajah 05-19-2000, 10:57 AM daytonians: Yes those filters will work in your MY00, and I have a MY99 (broken now, though).
Dan00RS 05-19-2000, 11:15 AM Hey what the hell is wrong with Fram?? I have been using the standard Fram filters for years on my cars and that includes the scooby! If the are good enough for Porsche to use as original equipment installed at the factory, then it has to be good enough for everybody else!!
daytonians 05-19-2000, 11:44 AM I used to use Fram all the time, until I had 2 of them blow of there gaskets and dump oil everywhere. Luckily I was in my driveway both times, so I didn't get stranded. It happened on my Honda V30 bike, and on my Toyota pick-up. I have never had a problem with any other brand.
I have a my99 and the 1004 filter from K and N will fit just right. The book that I read at the parts store didn't have any impreza's fitting for oil filtres. But as I looked cross references the book said 1004 and thats what I've used twice now with no problems.
