View Full Version : K&N Air filter for stock box on my2000 w/ map sensor?

I've heard people talking about the addition of an intake causing the RS to run lean. With the new my2000 MAP sensor, will a simple ecu reset take care of a lean run problem with the addition of the K&N drop in box filter? Also, blipping the throttle with the stock air box on my car causes a slight ping followed by a reduction of power (assuming caused by knock sensor?). Anyone else with this problem. I get no detonation at full throttle at all. Heel toe shifting doesn't cause the problem either..only blipping at idle. Will a High flow filter make this lean-out detonation problem worse?
(I hate MAP sensors..the ecu makes too many assumptions..) mike

I've got the Amsoil Powerfilter(drop in foam panel)in my 2000 and I haven't noticed any ping but I run premium gas so maybe that helps. The throttle response is better and it sounds cool under load from about 3500 rpm. I don't know if it increased power but when you blip the throttle the revs stay up longer.

OG,
could you give me the part no of your amsoil filter, i'd like one...

thanx

Go to DrakenParts in the links section. They are the only ones with the Amsoil air filter for the MY00 Impreza. Apparently they worked with Amsoil to create the thing.

I have one and am very happy with the performance. Between 3500-Red WOT gives a mean intake sound (removed resonator) and my butt dyno detects an increased punch.

I have not experienced any lean conditions. Although when the car is cold I can maintain a steady throttle postion while the RPMs climb and when it hits 4500 the RPMs shoot up to 5500 as if I had put it to the floor. It only does this when it is cold so I am assuming it has something to do with the warm up cycle (higher revs, choke...)

Several people that have MY2k models with A/F ratio meters have said that their cars run slightly rich, even with the addition of an aftermarket intake.

the way i'm running it right now, i pull everything out from behind the headlamp to the filter box and it runs great, i just want a foam filter 'cuz i'm used to them..

Ownly, are you using the hoodscoop for intake? I was thinking about doing this but I figured it would suck in rain/snow/dirt/etc and be LOUD. What I thought would be better would be to pipe directly from the airdam vent to the airbox.

my scoop is still closed for winter reasons, we'll see what happens this summer...

rally123,

I get the same knock with a blip on the throttle from idle... Note this only happens with the abrupt blip from warm idle (500-700 rpm) and a hard blip at that... I get a quick knock then back to normal...

Mods... None yet, tires but nothing intake related... I run 87 octane on non-race days...

Hope this helps, if anyone can answer why this happens it would be great to know why...

Ownly,

You can also order the filter directly from Amsoil. The # for a 2000 RS is S1992. They don't have it in the application books yet, but it works. I have a couple of pictures of it on my website. So you can see it for yourself.

It will be around $40 and it takes 3-4 weeks to get it since it is a special order part.

I installed the K&N in my MY00 last night and the difference was instantly noticeable. As mentioned with the Amsoil, I find much better throttle response as low as 3000 rpm.
My logic might be flawed, but I did not reset my ECU. I figure if the MY00's run rich, why would I want to tell my ECU that I am feeding my engine more air? I am going to run it for a few tanks and see what happens. I can always reset it later.
I have also removed the snorkus resonator. Before the K&N you only really heard the load intake above 4000rpms at WOT. Now you can hear it scream all the way from 2000rpm up. It also seems to shoot right to red-line. My Butt-Dyno also suggests that I am getting more power.

I too have a 2000 RS, and have done the intake mods to it in this order...

-removed all stock components before the filter box, and replaced with a dryer tube going into the fender hole
-insulated the dryer tube, sealed all other holes
-unorthodox pulley installed

After that first mod I noticed a much louder intake sound, and crisper accel. I kept on hitting the rev. limiter! At WOT the car became a beast...loud and strong accel. surge.

-installed Amsoil panel filter

Didn't really notice a glaring difference here, butt-dyno was silent (slight pun intended)

-installed Borla cat-back

Now the car is a LOT different. Before the car had sort of 2 modes. WOT- crazy acceleration, anything other than WOT- sedate and normal. Now the car pulls very strongly through the rev. range, with no hesitation at any RPM. No knocks, pings, bumps...'nuthin. Loud pops from exhaust when revs fall (unequal header lengths I am sure). But the difference between WOT and every other throttle position is less pronounced...it pulls clean all the time.

I hope that helps!

dcrawford:
Just out of curiosity, what sized exhaust are you running?

I just ordered my K&N for my 2000, and I'm going to almost carbon copy Larry Ganz's intake and see what happens.

I hope this isn't out of line here. Please delete the message if it is.

One thing about the Amsoil products is that now they have a way for everyone to get their products at dealer cost. I checked the dealer cost for the S1992 filter previously mentioned, and you would save approximately $10 off of retail. I posted info about it a couple of days ago at http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum2/HTML/001403.html

Check it out if you might be interested.

Ya know...I am not sure exactly the size of the pipe. It is actually 3rd hand exhaust (ravent->brucelee->me!). I know it isn't 3 inch...and seems bigger than 2. I would guess 2.25.

I will ask ravent and find out for ya!

Oh...I am embarrassed! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/frown.gif
