View Full Version : EGT's
MattC 04-18-2000, 04:22 PM Does anyone with a stock RS have an EGT gauge? If so what are your peak readings? Everyone with turbos, what are your temps? And where is your probe located? With the Minnam Stage II, a fuel pump, and AFC, at 7psi my peak egt's are 1500F. From what I read in SCC that sounds about right. Oh and my probe is right below the head, about 5" from the beginning of the header.

SKiDaZZLe 04-18-2000, 04:34 PM i have intake/fuel pump/FPR/fuel controller/ITC, and my EGTs are the same (~800C) at WOT in 4th and 5th. My tap is in the same location.
BTW this is at 0psi http://208.9.184.110/NonCGI/smile.gif

SKiDaZZLe 05-31-2000, 05:09 PM I figured i would follow up on this post...
After the turbo install, while running 10lbs, the highest EGT reached was 830 Celcius. This was under full-boost, WOT in 5th. Stayed 830 from 5000-5800 rpms. (~115-130MPH)
I cut off then. The O2 voltage was .88 the whole way. I need new injectors to run any higher boost (shiv...?)

adam99rs 05-31-2000, 05:15 PM 830 C sounds quite igh, but those O2 voltages are good, considering the boost. At 16 or 17 psi, my egt's are at 700, and my probe is before the turbo.
edekker 05-31-2000, 05:29 PM Robert (rao) had posted a peak EGT reading of 1450F. His car is (or was) a MY00 2.5RS running N/A at the time.
No... I don't believe those 02 readings are good. Generally speaking, 0.87-.88 is typically what you want to see in a non-turbo car at WOT. For a turbo car, you probably want to shoot for .90 to .92. I'll confirm these numbers when the car is running again. Right now, the crank trigger assembly is at the machine shop getting sized up. It should also be pointed out that there are other variables that can effect 02 sensor voltage readings (grounds, EGT, exhaust material, etc,.). This can make voltage analysis quite tricky.

paultg 05-31-2000, 06:37 PM Guys, I have a N/A 99 RS with an amsoil panel filter, as well as the Subaru gasket to remove the second filter. I also removed the silencer thing from the fender. The EGT gauge is in the car, but I won't be able to get the probe in until I can make it to RalliSpec in July. As soon as I get it in, I can post my results, if you still need them.

All this time I have been dialing in my 02 readings wrong. I have been shooting for anywhere between .60-.75.
Reading in the Chilton's Subaru Repair Manual (pg 4-19), it says for both the single wire sensor and the heated oxygen sensor that the readings should fluctuate between 0.40-0.60 volts. It sounds to me that by going to anything above 0.75 would be overly rich. I have been running like this for almost a year now, with turbo and NOS. I just recently had a compression check on my engine and everything is good. Also, my EGT's remain between 1100-1200F. The probe is located the same location as SteveS's setup.
Reading up at the DSM org site, they are shooting for ~0.90.
Question: What am I doing wrong? Why should someone shoot for 0.80+ if the manual says the range is between 0.40-0.60? This has been discussed before and the majority agreed to the 0.80+ range. I just don't know why the book would state otherwise. ???
Also, I would expect my EGT's to be really hot but that's not the case.

Andre Vandenberg 05-31-2000, 09:11 PM My probe is about 2" from the header to cyl head flange. My EGT at a steady throttle, 3000 RPM is 780 deg C. At WOT it falls to 720 deg C.
I also think it is very important where you take your readings from. The closer to the Cyl head (combustion chamber)the better. I don't think you can compare these readings and use them as the "bible", because the pick up points of all the probes are not in the same position. However, it does give you a rule of thumb…..
Hi Kevin,
My guess is that the specs given in Chilton's are probably the values you should see during cruise (during typical closed loop behavior). Under wide open throttle, the engine will want to be much much richer. Slightly above 0.90 for a good safety/power compromise. You may want to make sure that your 02 meter wire ground is a good ground. If it's a dirty ground, that would explain the meter reading less voltage than it should. Either that, or you've been running too lean for a long time. Good luck..
