I just added another turbo'd suby to my WRX, I know I'm not old school but I want to learn. Real quick, my wrx has crazy mods on it, I am putting a 2.5 STi block in it right now and STi RA gears. Other mods are run of the mill 300+ AWHP wrx mods, fuel, ecu, big turbo, full exhuast, FMIC that kind of stuff. I got a 86 XT (ea82) with push button 4wd on the 5 speed stick. I got a great deal on that car, that and I need to stop working on my wrx are the main reasons for buying it. I really want to make a rally car out of the XT, but what it will really become is another story. I was hopping you guys (and girls) could help me out on my way to XT greatness. Any info you have on the engine, drivetrain, body, wiring, hint/tip, anything, I would love to learn as much as I can about this car also.
I have a few questions off the bat, what kind of upkeep things should I look for? I want to get some more boost of off the turbo, but I think it's shot. It has oil/crap all over it, and there seems to be a lot of blow by also. There was also some, more then I would thing, in the turbo to TB pipe. Are there any other turbos that fit? Also anyone make an exhuast for it? I would thinking I would just go somewhere and have one made, whats a good tubing size? Don't want to over kill it.
ThankS for all the help.

When the topic of old skool Subbies came up on ClubWRX the other day, I forgot to mention Kevin Thomas (that's his screenname here) as someone who has one of these and has done some work on it. He has done custom cams and runs 15's in the 1/4. A little different application than your end use, but he is probably still a good resource. I bet he knows about suspension upgrades and such that would be worthwhile for you.

On the turbo, it would probably cost you about $200 to send it out to Deadbolt Industries and have it blueprinted, rebuilt with new bearings and wheels, and balanced. Deadbolt is the best shop that I know of when it comes to workng on IHI turbos. They would also be a good place to talk to about maybe a larger exhaust turbine for it. I don't remember exactly which turbo is in there, but with their Japanese connections, I am pretty sure they could get you an upgraded housing, or even complete turbo. The trick is that the flange's for the inlet and exhaust are different than all the Ej series subbies

And that is where an exhaust becomes a little challanging. Unless you want to spend a bundle, you will want to use the original flange from the stock DP. This will sacrifice some of the flow and spool up that a replacement DP usually offers. But you can still make some gains with bigger piping from there back. Personally, I don't think anything larger than 2.5" is needed for less than 250-275 hp, so that is what I would get. I had my custom exhaust work done at Ken's Muffler in Longmont. They are a good shop with decent prices, and are pretty well recommended by many of the SCCA guys, including folks that run old MG"s and Alfa's who need true custom work done. My custom midpipe with high flow cat ran me $225 installed. Add that to the $250 I paid Flat4 for my PDM divorced wastegate DP and I was out the door with a turbo exhaust for less than $500...

Nice and I don't even need, or want the cat, this car will not be on the street long. ThankS for the info, I will see if anyone will offer help, before I ask for it.

I think Dennis ex24 is on this board, he just sold his monster XT Turbo to a previous XT6 owner in Miami. The motor is completely built by a 20-yr SOA tech, 91 Legacy VF11 turbo, T-bird IC, some WRX exhaust parts, XT6 complete susp. swap, and a FT4WD 5spd tranny.

Just realize that the limits of the EA82T engine are in the headgaskets. Put any reasonable amount of boost to the factory gaskets on an old EA82T and they'll blow worse than 96 Outbacks.

Good luck though, XT's are fun cars no matter what their trim level!

Thats what I have been hearing, so I was thinking a dead WRX, maybe even STi, drivetrain maybe on the XTs path to greatness. Anyone know how hard of a swap that is? It's hard to do a good search because ont eh 3 letter min., oh well.

MCL You can tell me how to post photo's?
I can tell you how to make an EA82T a 12.5 Sec Vehicle with fairly standard internals, especially in 'Vortex' as the 'Top-End', (high -speed), Power is not as 'Hindered' as with nodels with a higher 'screen-rake' , (I have gained 25kmh by 'Swapping-Bodies'
between 'L' Series Sedan and Vortex Shapes over 400M!!)
First thing:Chuck the OEM Turbo and go for a VF 33-34, (this info tried and tested!), Make twin 'primary' pipes, (Ported Exh), to Collector at DSide Cyl head bracket 2 into 1 @ Turbo Inlet, (Tune Primaries to wavelength according to inlet 'standoff' height to Valve including Exhaust Velocity X Volume X Length, UNLESS 'timed missfire' Engine Managment Installed), Replace standard Throttle Body with 85mm Unit, Fit Front Mount 'Cooler, (in this case, EVO 3 Lancer 'Cooler), A/Market Eng- Management including rising rate Fuel Press Reg. If you are serious, you would machine 'Shims'to replace The Hyd Lifters, (Disassemble lifter and fit shim WRC "85" Style!), Also the Rocker arms are known for High RPM/Spring Tension Failure. I have built MANY performance versions of these as well as factory warranty rebuilds and after market machining/Performance application requirements. I have PHOTO's to PROVE IT!!
But if you are counting dollars, put an EJ Series Motor in it!
They will give you 'More Bang For Your Buck' than anything else so far!
AND if a 99EJ20T fit succesfully into a '1400 Coupé' ,(under-bonnet-Intercooler included!), and runs consistant LOW 12's TOTALLY STOCK STANDARD!! Why would you spend the time and money on an EA82???... "Because you got the info from your workmate who built the '85 WRC Engine like I did!!"
Also, run 1.6mm 'O-Ring'in lengths, joined at the top with super-glue, (neatly, before fitting), on 'Cam-Box/Housings'to Avoid Leaks for up to 350,000kms!. GENUINE OIL DELIVERY O RINGs ONLY, (Genuine are steel-backed and will not 'fall into'the oil gallery', non-gen are just an O Ring and not worth fitting even on a used car!!
Hope this helps!!!!

G'Day,
I Have turned boost 'in standard trim' to 11 Psi with no Cooler and Pulled Cyl Head Bolts from the Block, ONE PRODUCT....VHT TORQUE-TIGHT-COPPER-GASKET-SPRAY, NEXT PRODUCT, (a bit tricky first time round), RE-COIL THREAD INSERTS or 'Porsche-Type' CASE-SAVERS, trouble is, if you do it yourself, (is there any other way?), it is awkward to get the 'TWO INSERTS' to 'align themselves so-as a bolt, (11x1mm from memory), will pass through both without friction, (enemy when torquing.....DER!). That's what I DID, THENM TURNED THE BITCH UP TO 15 PSi, DISCONNECTED FUEL CUT AND RAN LOW 13's with standard ENG management!! Ended up popping the C/Wheel in a 31 Spline EFI 82 Series BOX!!!! Chucked it all away, (sold it to a HILL CLIMB FRIEND), and bought the 95 REX.....but that's another story.........

TOO MUCH TO SAY>>>>>>>>>>>I neeed a Sheila to type for me.......

Just curious, subyrally, how are you going to fit a 'Rex 'Cooler on a EA82 series Manifold? As far as I am aware, the outlet for the OEM turbo Faces UP,
as does the Throttle Body, I have had a 99 'Rex 'Cooler for 3 years and never saw any viable way of 'making it fit', (other than rotatng OEM Compressor housing and sticking 'Cooler cooler upright through bonnet)!!

Why don't you just 'Shoe-Horn the Whole Driveline in there??
Eng, Trans, Diff, Custom T/Shaft, Gauge Cluster.

You will find if you do this with a manual 5 speed Manual ,(Standard), you will
"Change Lanes" when you 'Flat-Change' second gear.

206kw Divided by 1186KG=5.7kg per Kw!!!
Now it's Ferrari!!!! (By the Numbers....)
If you buy a front-cut import, (cut from behind front seats, rear diff/cradle inc), take wiring out in one piece, fit climate control etc to OEM dash, even has connectors for 'Tweeters' on the dash etc, headlights plug straight in, as do horns, Turn signals, fit gauge cluster, graft rear harness in, (on DS Kick Panel), fit EFI fuel pump, (Local Generic EFI pump is fine as OEM not in tank),
My auto electrician had the thing running in 45mins, (Even thermo fans going the right way!!)

This was by far one of best conversions and still gets down the Drags every now and then, it is daily driven and has yet to be beaten on the road!!

If you are convinced you want to stick to the EA82, I would fit a front mount
and the 'Rex Turbo, (Go for 99 Sti), you will definitely need an after market Programmable ECU, (Dyno Tuning is expensive), also, the EA82 Injection is very Primitive, (by todays standards), and triggers fuel and spark from Distributor Driven by a Manually adjustable cam belt!!=Maintenance/Detonation/Problems.

Do some sums on what it will cost and I think you will find the EJ20T conv is the better choice. I am still a HUGE fan of the EA82 Motor and worked with a Guy from Chile who was invloved heavily in Engine Development for WRC Rally Team way back then, also worked on World Speed Record Liberty in '92!
He also agrees it just aint worth it!!!
But I still want to know how you will fit 'Coooler and Turbo from EJ20/5 series to EA82...... Keep me posted.

Cheers........Phew!!! :D
I still need a secretary for typing........and other duties!!!

well, the cost difference is huge, at the moment, i am unempolyed. im saving the wrx swap for my impreza. but to use the wrx intercooler, i am going to swap in the "spider" intake manifold from the xt (alcyone) that has the throttle body opening to the rear like a new suby. i already have a wrx down pipe and intercooler. i just need to get the turbo and have a 2" long uppipe made for it. then i need to just get the piping for the intercooler and bov. as well as a few small things like an air filer and adapter to use a cone filter. the most expinsive part will be having the exhaust made for the car, mainly cause i need two muffler sections. one is to get it through inspection and the other will be swapped on after i get it tagged.
if you go to www.ultimatesubaru.com , there was a guy that put the ea82 with this set up into a first gen brat, so there is more proof that anything is possible. ill keep you posted.

I am thinking the BRAT is....Maybe a Utility??
Did that with a Complete WRX driveline..........
Very neat, except it was auto and I had to "Cut + Shut" the 'Tunnel' as there was not enough room for the 'Fatter' Trans. It was against my advice that the Client wanted Auto, and sure enough, within 6 months he was back for a Trans swap to Manual.
(More Bucks for Sixpack!!LOL)
Great fun fiddling.......
We do not have an EA82 Series released here with the inlet config you speak of, perhaps I should have logged on earlier and my Gearbox would have Spat Earlier!!!LOL
Is there anyway you can Graft a Larger Throttle Body on there???
One of the Largest Restrictions for Subaru Engines has ALWAYS been the Throttle Body....... Just a thought....
Let me know how you go....
Cheers!!!!

for the xt manifold that i am using, i should be able to macine it to fith the xt6 throttle body, whivh is a little larger, i think it is like 1/2" in diameter larger. i think that the brat was called the "utility" and then i think they called it the "brumby". i think.

right now i am wiating on word from the guy selling me a turbo, hasnt sent my his info sothat i can pay him. then i need to get the exhaust made and the car inspeced and registered. i think that ill get the car on the road before i add the wrx turbo to he mix. that should make inspection a lot easier overall. when i get finished, ill be posting the results on both forums, here and usmb. it will either be a monster or a monstrosity.

Hello Wicked,

Yes there are other turbo's that can fit. The Legacy turbo will fit. I'm not sure if it's a direct bolt on but I have been led to think so. As for exhaust size, go for 2.25 - 2.5". 2.25 is sufficient though and most agree it is the best to use at the USMB site. Stop by TWE's site (I forgot their website address). Stop by THIS (http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19634&page=1&highlight=header+turbo) link. It's a group buy for a TWE headers and uppipe for the turbo (Your turbo application). TWE also have a couple of turbos that you can use as well as an upgrade with the header and uppipe. I called TWE up a while back and was told that two customers had this setup....which was custom btw. A stock WRX could not outrun the EA81T. The car was capable of running in the 14's in the 1/4 mile....so TWE said.

Also, stop by Deltacams and get your cams upgraded. Guys at the USMB swear by them and it'll help your top end a LOT. They are cheap. You should be able to pick up a set for $165 or less. Maybe less since $165 is what I paid for mine but I have a 6 cylinder XT (XT6). I think you get a free T-shirt with it as well with Deltacams on it (I did). You simply can't beat this price and it's worth it.

Go to Meineke mufflers to have your exhaust made up. Should be cheap. I can't help you with a muffler though. I like Dynomax's on my XT6s but for turbo I dunno. Hope this helps! :D

The new OE headgaskets are SOUND on these things. Just keep the engine temps happy (between 180 and 200) and cool the oil, and it will stay together. Make sure the heads are machined true...as that is also a KEY.

Meineke just bent me a 2.25" catback exhaust yesterday on one of my XT6s. I had already orded a Dynomax muffler and brought it in. I did a before and after dyno the same day and posted the results. The 'peak' hp/torque was the same but throughout the rpm range I gained anywhere between 4-11hp/lbs-ft. I have an auto so I test 1st gear through 3rd. 3rd gear had between 8-10 extra hp/torque throughout. Good stuff, especially on an old school scooby. Woot, Woot!

well, the header for this car only has two pipes, i have seen more complicated cat backs made there. i still have to supply the flanges though.
