So I'm going to be investing in an ej22t in the near future. My ultimate goal is as much HP as I can possibly tap out of the thing. But I want my engine to last....SO...what would be a better route to go...
buy a brand new ej22t w/gaskets = around 1800 shipped
OR
find an old ej22t (probably with high miles) and rebuild it , as well as swap out the internals for good aftermarket ones. = $500+ crank, rods and pistons=2500+ rebuilding cost = around 3 grand.
would the cylinder walls and rest of the block(non moving parts) be significantly weaker after all the miles (150k+) put on the engine?would rebuilding and replacing the internals be worth it on an engine with so many miles? would sleeving it be a good idea?
and finaly...who does this type of engine work?

Well,
For starters, if youa re doing a serious high powered build, you will want to take that new block and replace both the rods and the pistons. The rods because you wanted stronger (even though the stock ones are forged) and the pistons to bring up the CR. Using an EJ22T with stock pistons will have between 7.3-7.5:1 CR depending on EJ25 or EJ20 heads on it. So, add another +/-$800 to the price of entry on a new block. And you can by a block like this from Axis for $2300, IIRC. Check their site on the price, as I am not 100% sure on that #.
If you get the used block, you would do the exact same thing. The main difference is you would want to tank the thing and get all the bearings replaced in it. You don't need to worry about the "strength" of the sleeves or anything like that. The block is rock solid. And don't bother replacing the crank. The crank is forged and will last forever. So, going this route can save you $1000 or more. This is exactly what I had intended to do until I hit the $$$ skids. I have this exact block for sale in the private classifieds. It also has some pictures of the cylinder walls. YOu can see that the wear on a 196k mi engine is so low that the factory crosshatches are still visible on the walls.
Mike from Axis actaully tried to buy this block from me, but I want more than would make it profitible for someone like him to make his margins. You could have them build a used block like this for you and his lost profit margin becomes your pocket savings. Personally, I was just going to buy the rods and pistons from Axis or Crawford and have it built locally. Freight on something like a shortblock would add close to $200 to the build. I know of a couple of engine builders local to me, and would just give them the parts and have them put it back together. Cheaper that way. Probably quicker too...

You want a build block. How much do you plan on spending? They go from 5(ej22t forged pistons installed and running) to over 20k( 2.8L and heads with the turbo to move it to 7-8k redline). Dont forget to do the head work you should for this big power your looking for, it will make life much easyer.
This is a list of motor builders, contact all of them and tell them what your are looking for, power wise, and how much you want to spend. See what they say.
