View Full Version : 04-05 WRX Aftermarket HID???
DieselClown 06-16-2004, 01:18 AM Are people with the new stylke headlights having trouble with the light patterns of an aftermarket HID setup? I'm surious whether or not I should go this rouet, or just get the JDM HID lights instead. But at $1200, its pretty damn steep.
Hank3 06-16-2004, 10:09 AM It's pretty much a bad idea to just throw in an HID kit in the 04 WRX headlights. The light spread will be bad due to the lights not having a glare shield. You'll have to adjust the beams lower since the glare will be bad for oncoming drivers. This would somehow defeat the purpose of getting them for lighting purposes...unless you don't mind lowering the beams to get the cool HID look. Save up the money and get the STi HIDs or retrofit your lights with projectors :)
jac04 06-16-2004, 01:23 PM I totally agree with Hank3. Having done the Catz HID retrofit first before installing the STi HID lights, I can tell you that the aftermarket HID beam pattern is awful at best. Get the STi HIDs to do the conversion the right way. Plus, installing the STi lights is very simple. Let me know if you have any questions.

DieselClown 06-16-2004, 07:02 PM thanks...i want the hid's primarily for the light output (sat in my friend's 3 series and m5 and the output was really amazing at night compared to regular halogens) so I guess I'll save a little more money for it! Damnit! I wanted to use the money left over for HID's in the foglamps housing too. hmm...maybe I can sarcrafice the HID's from the headlamp and adjust the foglamps so that they aim higher and light the road more? If I adjust the headlamp lower, it doesnt shine onto oncoming traffic as much but yet still shines the road somewhat right?
Daboro's Rex 06-16-2004, 07:26 PM I have Aftermarket HID's on my04 and it looks great. the beam pattern is great and the glare isnt bad at all. they are just really bright. So if I were you save the money and use it towards something else such as HID's in the fog lights but I would use the money for power or suspension. thats me though
Curt.
Let me know if you need help or anything it was kinda confusing.
intence 06-16-2004, 07:29 PM STi headlights is the way to go
Daboro's Rex 06-16-2004, 09:38 PM yeah it maybe the way to go but it is alot more expensive.
Hank3 06-17-2004, 12:27 AM I say spend some time and retrofit your headlights to projectors and then get HIDs. Optimal light output, super sharp cut-off, no glare, and cool flicker of the lights like the BMWs :)

Where would you buy them along with the wiring harness?
A Subaru dealer?
Hank3 06-17-2004, 07:20 PM Try www.subaruwrxparts.com or one of the vendors on here that is actually a dealer also. They tend to discount things more than a small Subaru dealer would...
do the sti headlights bolt right up to the stock wrx headlights or do u have to get like the sti wiring harness.
thanks

Light fitting is not an issue but it would require a STI wiring harness. High voltage wires are required as well as headlight leveling. I sure don't see any for sale anywhere.
jac04 06-18-2004, 01:29 PM I installed the STi HID lights on my 2004 WRX wagon without the use of any 'STi wiring harness'. Installation was very simple. I did not hook up the headlight leveling, which is not required anyway. There is also someone who is selling plug and play adapters for this conversion, including the levelers - I think his user name is wagons_ho!. Do a search on his user name and you will find more info.

I guess I assumed that because the STI wires are heavy gauge (12 gauge i believe) that they would be required.
Chaste Automotive 07-02-2004, 07:52 AM You can either wire the HIDs up your self (do a search on this, it has been covered)
OR
You can get a plug and play connector from www.chaiofangimports.com
