View Full Version : Defi Setup??
XSWRX02 06-17-2004, 01:52 AM Im not really sure how the defi guages work with the control unit and everything, is it better to get the defi guages that link up to the control unit?? I know the one set of defi guages dont need the unit. Botom line is i would like somebody to explain how it works  Thankyou to whoever does it.
datwrx 06-17-2004, 04:01 AM The controll unit lets you set up certain features for the defi gauges. You can set warning light, record 3 mins of driving and some other stuff. It is also daisy chained so you just need to run power to the control unit and link them all together. Hope this helps.
InfamousDX 06-17-2004, 04:13 AM You can daisy chain only two of them right?
allanak 06-17-2004, 06:29 AM You can daisy chain all of them. The BF series require the linkbox, the D series do not.
Basically you have:
gauge --> gauge --> gauge --> linkbox
And power and all the sensors plug into the back of the linkbox so you can have a real clean install. I'll try and get some pics for you.
XSWRX02 06-17-2004, 12:08 PM Alright thanx alot guys i get it more now, appreciate it pics would be great!

dan avoN7 06-17-2004, 11:36 PM the defi v2 and defi bf series are the gauges that link together. They require the v2 control unit. Basically you wire the control unit instead of each individual gauge. Then you plug in all the senders into the control unit in the provided slot. Then you plug the link wire into the control unit and run it to the first guage and plug it into the left slot. Then plug a wire into the right slot on the first gauge and run that to the left slot on the next gauge. Thats why they call them "daisy chain" gauges since they all chain together. It makes install easy and they are really really nice gauges. I use all the features and the peak hold/record really comes in handy when tuning your car as you dont have to be looking at the gauge when fine tuning boost. As far as v2 or bf its all up to you. They are the same exact gauge except the bf's black out and light up differetnly while the v2's light up green. Heres a pic of them installed on my car at night.

InfamousDX 09-16-2004, 01:37 AM Can anyone tell me the wiring setup for the control unit's power? I have 4 wires I don't know what to do with :p

where are you putting the control unit. I tapped into the clock's harness which is very easy to do. Just remove the clock and look at where the harness plugs in. The plastic piece labels each wire. There are 4 wires for the clock harness and those are the 4 you need to connect to. Two of the wires colors are different, but if you look at the clock it tells you which is which so you can easly wire it.

Well that seems easy but where could I put it? Any thoughts? I want a decent install, not just velcro'ing it to the side of the center console really.
dan avoN7 09-16-2004, 03:43 AM if you look up at the pic i posted, you need a single din head unit though. When i installed my friends i put his control unit in the glove box and used double sided tape to mount it to the top. Looks very clean and its easy to run the 4 wires up to where the clock harness is. Then you just run the sensor wires through that little rubber opening directly behind the glove box and into the engine bay. It exits in the engine bay behind the turbo on the firewall.

dan avoN7 09-16-2004, 01:52 PM edit: hah i thought you had the same problem as the guy in the first post. I know exactly whats wrong. You hooked everything up with the battery still connected, correct? If so then you blew a fuse, happened to me when i installed them. I thought everything was correctly wired but nothing worked. Open your engine bay and go into the fuse box. I forget off the top of my head but its a radio fuse i think.... Should be the blue 15 one. Just remove each one and then see if its blown. I can almost guarantee thats the problem.
dan avoN7 09-16-2004, 01:56 PM oh and in the cover you remove to get to those fuses in the engine bay, they have one brand new one there. So just swap them out. I dunno if you've ever seen a blown fuse, but there is normally a metal "u" type piece in there. If there are two seperated pieces then its blown.
InfamousDX 09-16-2004, 02:16 PM I was thinking I blew a fuse but thought it was the INSIDE fuse box.. thanks fro the tip brb.
EDIT: Yea blew a fuse... just replace it and go?
EDITē: Dome lights are back on, but the meters still refuse to power up. Can you confirm my wiring?
Defi black wire to clock harness GND (ground).
Defi orange wire to clock harness LIG.
Defi white wire to clock harness ACC.
Defi red wire to clock harness BAT.
dan avoN7 09-16-2004, 04:31 PM Heres how it need to be wired
DEFI CLOCK
red to blue/red
orange to yellow/green
white to pink
and black to black
Also depending if they are the BF's or Link v2 make sure you have the link cable going to the guages in the right spot. Either in spot 1 or spot 2 on the control unit.
Be sure to have the battery unplugged or you will keep blowing that same fuse whenever the wires come in contact with a different one. Once you are sure everything is correct put electrical tape around it.
InfamousDX 09-16-2004, 04:57 PM K got it to work... I actually wasn't getting power because one of the plastic connectors on the control unit was loose so I jut pushed it in. Minor problem, I must have switched ignition power and illumination cuz they only work with my lights on. Will get to that in a second. Thanks a lot Dan!!
