View Full Version : Running the quarter?

OK, guys I am going to the track to see what I can do on the 25th. It is import night and about 10 of my friends are going to see what all are cars run. I have a stage 2 cobb '04 WRX. What can I do to make sure I run my fastest there. Any common misstakes that people make there first run at the track? I have launched my car about 10 times but never at the track.

Um, one other piece of advice is to launch at the second yellow light. Sooner and you red light, later and your reaction time will be too slow.

you dont have to worry about leaving on the yellow light or even on the green. If you're just racing for times, you can wait 10 seconds after the green and launch and it wouldnt affect your 1/4 time. The timer wont start until the car leaves the line.

I thought this was a silly thread about how long it would take you to run the 1/4 mile...literally:lol:

hold rpm @ at least 4800rpm. i go up to 5500rpm when stagged. dont worry about lights. reaction times are hard to get good at with a stick shift, turbo, 4wd. Launching is even harder! get the best gas you can. do you have cats? If not, than leaded gas may be for you. It wont help, if you are not going to go over 20psi. of boost.
take your exaust off, all of it except downpipe
run about 3-4 gallons of fuel in tank
leave tire pressure stock
lighten up car
get the floor mat out of drivers side
boost, boost, boost, (you will need a fuel cut device)
do not let someone talk you into painting VHT traction compound on tires, you would break something without a 20k drivetrain
a little front left wheel spin is ok
wring that little boxer out to 7000rpm every gear
beat that shifter like you want to break it!
use the recirculating hose between bov and intake, car will stay in tune better.
put ice or dry ice on intercooler in the pits
dont worry about competitor, just run your own race.
dont stage until you are relaxed, but alert.
always check for hoses blowing off with high boost, i have had many bad times when 30psi starts to blow off hoses. I use sho-goo and zip-ties to hold lines on
if you change fuels, try to drain out all pump gas. disconnect a fuel line, attatch a drain line, and turn key on and off to pump gas into a container.
then reset computer by unpluging negative to batt for at least 30sec. ( watch out for gas fumes)
after about 100 gallons of leaded race fuel, your o2 sensor will start to read leaner and leaner, making you waste gas under normal driving, poor idle and startup.
bad o2 will not affect wide open throttle
get a belt that will bypass the power steering pump( $10) = a few hp
take off belt to a/c= maby 1hp?
fold in mirrors
take a crap to lighten load, ha ha

high boost will also break the diaphram in the purge valve for gas tank emissions
check it by blowing into the small central line on the back of valve. no air should pass in or out

i almost forgot a cheap thing. put a torq strap on that motor! find some where to tie the motor to frame rail. when looking at motor, it wants to roll over counter-clockwise every time you hit the gas or shift. maby a noise will trigger the knock sensor. False knock!. also the motor flopping around is a waste of time and power.
put a strap somewhere high and to the right of motor and attatch it to somewhere low on the frame rail. it will tighten up the slack in drive train, which may make you unsmooth for street driving.

add a grade 8 bolt somewhere in the front of motor, or just use any existing undercut on a reasonably strong surface. some people may not have a/c like me. every motor modded is different. stay away from the timing belt cover! find a hole, or just loop the belt you are using around the frame to it self. use a ratchet type strap to put a little pre-load on it! AWSOME!

does anyone have any other tricks to share. I feel like i am giving and not learning?

it has been my experience, and actually it is a fact that our cars stop makin hp after 6500...it falls like a rock....i've had good luck shifting at the 6100-6500 rev...i set my indicator at 6100...so by the time i see it i'm at about 6250...our shifters dont like to be forced either quick, clean, smooth shifts work best....i've made a total of about 50 runs...NED, Lebanon Valley, etc....best runs were in the valley, but the most important thing...HAVE FUN! cause you cant do this on the street!!!:p

and one more thing i neglected....have as little gas in the tank as possible...my best runs were with less than a 1/4 of a tank of c16..yes i ran it to almost totally empty...then 5 gal c16,,,118 octane.....can you say FLAMES!!!:disco:

turbo2nr

what type of fuel is 118?, never heard of it on the east coast.

do not have as little gas as possible, that is stupid. drain tank, rock car left to right to get gas over the saddle in the tank, drain out a little more, then put 3-4 gallons of good gas in it. you do not want to have the low light on guage on

i use sunoco red max #5 , NOS blend, and methanol/water inj.

power does not end @6500rpm, THAT is a well known fact. are you still on the little stock turbo? try adding a stiffer spring to waste gate valve. try removing the exaust, you will see.

turbo2nr

you Should rip that shifter. if you are worried about hurting your car, than get it off the strip. somthing will break, probably when you are far from home and have to get to work the next morn.!

turbo2nr
06-18-2004, 03:05 PM
don't worry what your car wants or likes, it probably wants to go home and hide in the garage after all that abuse. you own that thing, and if you want it to go fast, you will hurt it!

Turn the AC off and all excess electrical noise (radio etc) :P

If you are really comfortable with the gates on your shifter you can try shifting really fast without lifting on the throttle.

Stay out of the water box but maybe have a freind brush the rocks off your tires

Shift earlier than you think , by the time you actually shift it will already be later than you should have.

If you get a bad launch dont be afraid to slip the clutch while on the gas to recover. Not good to do this excessivly but its not as bad on the car as a launch is because you are already rolling.

Dont expect to run the advertised fast 1/4 mile times that all your buddies talk until you have it Down.(You will only get fustrated)

Mkae sure your Air filter is clean and all your fluids are good.

turbo2nr

take ac belt off! take radio boom box out. take everything out!
deflate your lungs, too much weight!
put thinner oil in your engine, turbo spins in this stuff and thinner oil will help with spool-up, who cares if it is bad for other reasons, we want to go fast, right?
put normal oil in if you are doing a lot of street driving in hot areas, or if you are scared.
if you are using nitrous, you do not want to hit rev-limiter, so let off between shifts.
many no2 units are activated by tps sensor voltage or a momentary switch on the throttle.
you do not want to spray in the rev-limiter zone!!! stay away!
let off for shifts!

i forgot this trick, almost. take a/c belt off, but leave defroster on! why? your fan will stay on drawing air through your front mount intercooler if you have one.!

i am game for a friendly wager. cash only please. see me at the shootout before the fun begins.
i will have the black wrx with a rwd set-up, eight point cage, and drag wing
bring it on!

if you are not breaking parts, you are not trying. yes i have broken alot of parts along the way, just to see how far they would go.

here is another trick that got me .5 quicker....pack your top mount intercooler with ice...i run 70%water 30% alchohol...with a jdm auto spray switch....first run 13.1....second run 12.84...then consistent high 12/low 13's...but my second clutch is startin to slip...1.67 60'...i am happy with that...next on tap is greddy e-manage with an fp green...and a new clutch #3:mad:

and i know it says scooby newbie...but i've been draggin for 18 years...just as a hobby...do most of the learning on the fly....flame me if you want but if you dont watch out you'll be missin some doors....i was beat by a 415awhp 2.5rs...but the second time we raced i guess he fell asleep and i got him by 2/10's.....i was so pumped! i went home after that....with my car still in one piece...which is a first....i usually always break something!

1.67 60' is great. i get those every once in a while. i hope for some 1.4s and 1.5 with my new rwd set-up which is indetail @latest greatest thng, thread

- Take off heavy big aftermarket wheels
- AC off and put it on heat just in case
- Mirrors folded in (proven .05 sec gain)
- Empty washer fluid, or if u have it for spray, keep enough to use.
- Practice your shifting and timing for the first few runs
- Turn off motor while waitng in line to aloow it to cool
- wear light clothing and clean the car out of all crap
- run open turbo with no filter (stupid but helps a little)

Have been t the track a few times and improved my times by about 0.2 secs from doing stupid minor stuff.

G Luck.

make sure you don't go over a puddle of water. I did when I went to track for the first time and spun wheel in 1st and 2nd gear ---> 15.1 @ 91mph!
