View Full Version : Japan Spec EJ25 vs. US Spec????

There are enough variances that it would be nice to know to have a reasonable guess as to what you're getting.

Just like the North American versions there are some that have hydraulic lifters, some that have stupid piston designs (skirtless), etc.

I don't believe that there is ever a ej25 in japan. I mean yes they make the ej25s for the north america market but they don't use it in the eastern countries. They only have the EJ 2.0 na or turbo.
i could be wrong.
but i can say for sure that there is no EJ 25 NA impreza in the japanese market.
hope this helps

The distributor said that he has no way of knowing what MY the car that it came from was since it is a Japanese take out. However, according to his engine bible thing there was only one version of EJ25 DOHC made between '97 and '99.

I'm not so happy without the exact mileage and MY of the car it came from, but I'm at the end of my line...

The Japanese Spec EJ25 is used in Forresters and Legacy Wagons, but you are right that they are not in Imprezas.

Whats a good price? You can pick up a standard WRX engine for 2500, and an entire 95 STI for 5400.

My good price is $1,300 shipped. The key is that I don't have to upgrade my clutch to deal with the power, or get a new cross member or deal with a nasty wiring harness mess. And that reduces install charges (I have no way of doing the work myself).

We have the 2.5 over here in the UK..

Same as your setup over in the US..again, several versions..SOHC..DOHC..etc..

I did a lot of Auto-X this summer, one with 3 people driving the car, and it had started to over-heat at idle. That didn't repeat itself, so I wasn't worried when we entered the PBX Rally. The car got really shaken up, bottoming out constantly and running at 4,500+ RPM for a few hours straight. Then it crapped out on the last stage in the middle of the forest. I took it to a dealer who diagnosed it with a cracked block, which he wanted $1,300 for just the block, and he was $70 an hour. Now it is in West Philly at my Ghetto mechanic waiting for a good engine.

That is the short version...

Your not that far from RalliSpec in Jersey, why not take the car up there to get the work done, that and they can probably find the correct engine for you. They are great people, give them a shot!

Why spend all that money on an unknown engine from overseas when you can just get a 2.5L Subaru Legacy motor from any salvage yards. I've seen some with 30k miles for around $600. Yeah, this is for the long block too. Can't you just use the short block portion of it and mate it to your existing heads?

There's a couple rear ended Legacys around me for $1000 too. Excellent donor vehicle for 1.8L FWD Subarus.

Urgent Question:

I'm in the process of replacing my '98 DOHC EJ25 after cracking the block and damaging all of the internals. I have a great lead on a Japanese Spec DOHC EJ25 for a good price, but it doesn't come with the wiring harness. Will this engine be a direct swap and work with the '98 RS wiring harness?

I would say that it should, but I'm looking for any advice on this.

Thanks!

Alex

What model year is this JDM EJ25 DOHC engine?

akuhner

I'm not sure of the model year, but I can probably get it. I thought there were only a few model years for the DOHC versions?

Riot Squad - I know Dave and Andy @ RalliSpec well. Back in November when this first happened they said they couldn't even start until January, and I had no idea it would take this long to find a donor, so I took the car elsewhere. Hind sight is 20/20, I should have left it there.

Aspen - I've been searching for a regular EJ25 for 2 months now and all I've had is bad luck. My first donor was blown to begin with, now I have to deal with the fact that the mechanic took the time to do the work on the bad engine. I'd just say tough-noogies, but he is the best mechanic I've found in Philly and we have a good relationship.

What I'm really looking for is advice as to the ability of my current '98 EJ25 ECU and wiring harness to run a Japan spec EJ25 successfully! Believe you me, I have thought of everthing else and I'm left with little choice but to give it a shot.

Thanks all,

Alex

Alex,
I know this isn't what you're looking for (I can't help you on the wiring harness thing), but talk to F&S Auto Salvage www.fsautoparts.com (http://www.fsautoparts.com) here in CT. They have my totalled '99 2.5GT there (it's the one that comes up on their site as a "Recent Arrival") - 33k on the engine, I can tell you the full history if you want it. They also had a couple 2000 2.5GT wagons when I was there 3 or 4 weeks ago, they have at least a couple dozen Outbacks (all of which are 2.5s of course), and according to their website they have a 2000 2.5GT sedan with only 18k on it (that must be a brand new arrival, I don't think that one was there a few weeks ago).

My guess would be that you're not going to be able to find anyone here that will tell you positively "Yes/No, the US spec 2.5 wiring harness will/will not work with the JDM spec 2.5 engine." So I guess I'm thinking the same thing as Aspen. Either find a US engine (and there are plenty out here in the Northeast!), or just use the JDM short block and put all your '98s stuff on it.

Alex,

Try www.mr-rebuildables.com (http://www.mr-rebuildables.com) They have a few 2.5's up there.

They are also only about an hour from you.

Also, if I remember correcty the Ej25 was used in Japan from 96-98.

Thanks Pat and Chris, I'm trying both places. Mr. Rebuildables has a horrible web site and the contact page doesn't even work, do you have a phone number for them?

Pat, would you honestly recommend that I ask for your old EJ25?

If you're going to look at other EJ25s, then look into the one being used on the OSCA GT 2500 (or is it 2500 GT?). I believe it is based on the SOHC phase II engine. Its numbers are somewhere around 186hp@6000rpm and 174ft-lbs@2800rpm. That's about ten foot pounds more torque 1200rpm sooner than any of the US EJ25s. Its also about 20 more peak horses. Since its the SOHC phase II engine, I'll assume it has good part throttle response as well.

With that kind of torque, down that low, it would be a lot of fun having that engine in an Impreza for daily driving. Not as fast as a WRX, but less chance of getting caught in the wrong gear. The preliminary reviews of the new WRX seem to indicate that the engine is a little weak below 3000rpm or so and that there are some gaps in the gearing with the 5 speed (the six speed, if we ever get it, would be a different story).

I think such an engine (one with a nice big fat torque curve) might have it's advantages on certain autocross courses as well. Less rowing through the gears.

Supposedly, Mike Shields once told me that the OSCA's EJ25 is based on the Japanese spec. engine and just tuned for the higher octane and different emission requirements of that part of Europe.

Try them both.

Also thought of another, Capitol Auto Parts. The place is huge.

For your info.
Japanese spec DOHC EJ25 has
167ps@6000rpm.(the newest model LEGACY with AVCS)
or
175ps@6000rpm (the previous model LEGACY)
If you are getting the previous model EJ25, you are getting more horse power.

Well, I secured a regular US Spec EJ25 in the mean time so I bailed out of this one. Thanks for all the advice.

there is a version of the E25 with the AVCS stuff in it, it makes like 180 HP and some torque number in n*m that i didn't bother to calculate. (I am sure it's higher that 166 http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif )
