View Full Version : Forester xt gas mileage
jaxon 06-20-2004, 04:45 PM I have 1300 miles on my 2004 XT with automatic. I have read a lot of complaints on the XT's poor gas mileage. I can not complain. My first fill was 24 mpg, my second fill was 25 mpg, my third fill was 26 mpg and my last fill was 24.5 mpg. I considered break-in finished @ 500 miles. I drive above 4000 feet, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and as high a 7500 feet. I really was not babying the xt from day one. It is just too much fun to drive. My last tank of gas included 20, 0 to 60 time trials and considering that I drive in the mountains, I believe that the xt gets great mileage. Compared to my 340 barracuda that got 17 at it's best, this car would walk all over it at any speed.

AutoXchick 06-20-2004, 10:46 PM I too had heard the complaints of 15-20 mpg. We have about 3300 miles on ours, and have been averaging 25-28 mpg, and thats driving average to hard on the car. I'd like more.. but im happy with this.

I bought a sports car, not a prius.

Best 23.6
Worst 14.8
Mostly city driving though.

San Francisco Hills baby!
Bobshere 06-21-2004, 10:34 AM There seem to be two groups of FXT owners: Those who get mid 20's on many fill-ups, and those, like myself, who rarely get 20. If I had to guess, I'd say my average is something like 19mpg. I have yet to decide whether it's the locale and the type of driving I do, or whether Subaru has produced two classes of FXT, low mileage and hi mileage ;)

ghrays 06-21-2004, 11:22 AM I am getting 18-19, after 5000 miles. I have yet to achieve 20+ even with highway driving. With these results, I find it hard to believe the XT is capable of 25MPG.
wuckers 06-21-2004, 01:27 PM Has anyone with a Cobb Accessport seen better gas mileage when set on "economy" mode? It would be the only justification to shell out the cash that my wife would agree with. :o
joe z 06-21-2004, 04:30 PM i just took a trip from nh to va and the best best i got was 24.5mpg with the a/c on the whole time the ride back i was getting better mileage due to not running the a/c had almost 190miles out of 1/2 a tank
Caddy Daddy 06-22-2004, 01:31 AM city: 19-22
hwy: 24-26
snow: 16 ;)
wolf4wd 06-24-2004, 01:01 PM I'm really beginning to believe that those who drive their FXT's a bit harder, seem to get better gas mileage. For my own part, I notice if I slowly build up to about 4500 RPM before shifting while keeping under -.04 MPa, I get much better gas mileage. When I shift at 3000 RPM and notice that the turbo spools up and boosts a bit in the next gear, my gas mileage is a tad bit worse.
I get about 21 in my mixed highway / city driving loop. On the weekends where I drive about 120 miles each way to my house, I end up getting 25ish there, 22ish back (wind is the factor). On the open road on a road trip, I've gotten 27 consistently with a high of 27.8. I've gotten a low of 14 mpg when I was having lots of fun and going out to the track.
I bought a fast, turbo charged wagon. I'm very happy with the gas mileage all things considered.
VSB XT 06-24-2004, 01:49 PM I just got Ecutek'd recently and it seems like my gas mileage went even further down, but that's OK it's worth the extra fuel I'm burning! It keeps you in the safe zone. This new tank of gas will prolly be the one that tells me my true city mpg. So far it looks like 16mpg.
gumball 06-24-2004, 03:50 PM I'm curious how folks are measuring their gas mileage- is it based on fillups/calculation or the onboard computer? I usually fill the tank, drive, then fill the tank again. I divide the miles since the first fill by the gallons from the 2nd fill to get mpg. Of course there's probably some error- each fill may differ by 1/10 gallon or so depending on how sensitive the pump cut-off is, but still I think this is the most accurate/fair way to measure gas mileage. If everyone's measuring the same way then it does seem weird there's so much variance.
DeClerq 06-24-2004, 05:34 PM That's what I do. Divide the number of miles since my last fill-up by the number of gallons I just added. Also, I always stop filling when the auto-cutoff kicks in, I don't top it off. Hopefully it's a bit more consistent that way.
yvesberib 06-25-2004, 01:17 AM avg 19 to 20
low 16.1 in town pushing it a bit more than average.
high 25.0 all interstate highway 80 - 90 mph with a few bursts to 100 mph. I was very pleasantly surprised that it was this high.
This is at 5000+ ft elevation.
I drive in a "fun & peppy" fashion, but I do not drag every yokel that comes along.
odometer at 2500 now.
My guess is that it is the leadfoots that get the worst milage, maybe elevation is a factor too? I bought this car to have fun! Even so, the gas milage is about average. Not bad.
gharper 06-25-2004, 01:52 AM I think they should fit the XT with a bigger gas tank! Travelling around Australia with often 350 miles between gas stations made it rather inconvenient to say the least!
Great trip though!
looney 06-25-2004, 09:50 AM just past 6K and every tank after breakin has consistantly been at 20mpg... early in the game i've tried both conservative and spirited driving and stay at the 20. yesterday for the first time i got 21...:D
very very happy with the performance vs milage issue...;)
gumball 06-25-2004, 05:24 PM Just outta curiousity, for highway driving and coeff. of drag (CD), does the rear spoiler, ya know the little one on the roof that sticks out above the hatch, make any diff- i.e. improvement in CD and hence better mpg? or totally negligible.
Foresturbo XT 06-25-2004, 11:24 PM I'm glad I'm not the only one. I get normally around 18 mpg. Whats bad is we got the XT as our milage type-car. It gets less mpg than my V8 Mustang.
Although one tank I did get 28 mpg, and that was flying on the highway at @90 the whole time. Makes no sense.
Hayes 06-26-2004, 01:33 PM Me thinks there should be a long legged cruising top gear.
yvesberib 06-26-2004, 09:15 PM I have to agree with Foresturbo XT, that it made no sense that the best gas milage I got was at high highway speeds. They got 28mpg @ 90mph and I got 25mpg @ 80 - 90 mph, a few times up to 100+. Weird. I though it was going to suck when I filled the tank, but it was the best ever. I just don't see how that would be the best milage considering the amount of drag at those speeds, but now there are two of us seeing that for one fill up at least. BTW, I measure the milage the correct way, gallons to refill to auto shutoff and exact miles driven.
sleeperXTc 06-27-2004, 05:35 PM As one who purchased the rather expensive performance guage module, I've discovered that I can improve gas mileage by keeping track of the turbo guage. Keeping the engine out of the boost range will generate 22-28 mpg, depending on terrain, traffic, speeds, etc. Keeping the engine IN the boost range will drop your mileage into the 16 to 21 mpg range, depending on your boost levels, terrain, traffic.
Recent trip in Colorado with most driving in the 7,000' to 11,000' range, with infrequent passing, little traffic and moderate boost inputs netted 22-25 mpg over about 1000 miles.

There is no onboard computer to calculate the mpg in the FXT. And I also do it the old fashion way...fill er up then drive, calculate the miles driven into the next fillup.
I'm getting about 22-23 mpg with very aggresive driving.
