View Full Version : I rode in Larry Ganz's Impreza Tonight!! (some thoughts)
JJTheSubeDriver 12-23-2000, 10:58 PM First thought:
Mom always said wear clean underware, it's not anymore http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif!!
Instead of Larry posting about his car, I thought it might be good to have a second source on it. We started out at my house. Till we hit the main street, I didn't think much of his turbo. It felt just like my RS, for crying out loud! This shows one thing: the driveabiltiy as far as a daily driver on this kit is amazing. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif THEN we pulled out on the main street and I quickly found my self pasted to the back of the seat. So we did some stop-light launches, and I was like nice, real nice.
Then pulling onto the interstate ramp where I normally get to about 60-65 shifting at redline at the top we were doing 85. And he wasn't shifting at the limiter either! Now, for several reasons I won't tell you how fast we were actually going on the interstate http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif, I'll let you do the math and figure it out. 5th gear 5700RPM, and we were still accellarating, with plenty of pull left! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif We had to brake because we weren't sure if the traffic in front of us would pull into our lane of traffic. Some other points to ponder:
How much boost? 5 Psi.
Turbo Kit? JC Sports Group Buy with two major upgrades besides a 3" cat-back: S-AFC and RRFPR. Also a ACT Clutch with Flywheel.
Altitude? We are about 5300-5500 ASL up here.
Car weight: Curb Weight Plus- 500Pds Driver and Passenger (I'm a big guy), plus another 200Pds+ of luggage and presents for his kids http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif
I'll post more as soon as I can think again!! BTW, I did drive it just a bit, and I WANT A TURBO, DAMMIT! To you guys who are waiting on your kits, it's worth the wait!! Hang in there, trust me.
That's all for now, I'm still all excited!
JJ
Eric SS 12-23-2000, 11:12 PM Awesome! Thanks for the post. Any estimate on how much horsepower over stock?
Eric
ImprezaRS dot com 12-24-2000, 12:14 AM I'm guesing it feels close to 170-175hp at the wheels, but I could be wrong. I will try to have it on the the new AWD dyno in Boulder Colorado soon - maybe Tuesday if they are open? Don't know for sure when yet. If it isn't snowing like they say, I might go to the free track day at Second Creek Raceway on Tuesday before I head home - I even brought my helmet http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif
The Gtech pro says I'm 14.65 sec @ 97.5 mph qtr mile, and 6.22 seconds for 0-60 (but the speedo was reading 95mph at 6,000 rpm in 4th when I finshed that qtr mile run). These numbers are close to AndresRS01's Gtech numbers for his 175hp at the wheels NA car (if he is the one with the Cobb NA monster car). That's how I am guessing my HP.
I was told last week that someone had a MY00 on the new AWD dyno in Boulder Colorado. They said it was still under 100hp with a JCS intake on that car (with a moderate loss of low end torque and a 2.8hp gain up top vs stock intake). I have no idea if he had other mods on the car. I will try to get dyno charts of my turbo and copies for the other car when/if I am able.
Don't forget, we lose about 20-25% of the sea-level power up here, so a car that dynos at 100 hp up here would dyno at 125hp at sea-level (which is what the RS has shown on the dyno for a few people). The turbo cars only lose about 6% of their power up here.
JJ's car will likely be the guinea pig for dyno testing the current V5 stage I and the future Stage II GanzFlow upgrade (new air-plenum with 3" inlet). I have someone who will start working on some prototypes after the new year.

ImprezaRS dot com 12-26-2000, 11:58 PM Wow. Guess people are already tired of my car. Bummer. Gotta do more mods now to get attention... http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif

mcgyver 12-27-2000, 12:25 AM Not me! Larry
I'm always interested in your updates about your car. Maybe I'll have a chance to see it in person, when I drive out to Colorado. I'm coming out the first week of January, as I always do every year.
Told Kevin I'll be stopping by to see the new place, last time I was there was in May.
Someday, I too will have a Turbo. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif

gtguy 12-27-2000, 08:30 AM I really think it's too bad that there's been all the ugliness about the GB. When I heard about people pulling out, I tried to contact JC about seeing if any kits were available, but there must have been a waiting list, because I never heard back from them. I just missed the deadline, and would have gotten a kit in a heartbeat.
I still will, once all the suspension and wheel stuff is all sorted out. It's good to hear that running something as low as 5 psi, the car still rocks. That's all I'd be wanting to run anyhow, because of engine paranoia.
Kevin
Turbo4me 12-27-2000, 08:38 AM I just went to http://www.speedworldmotorplex.com/ and used a little program they have to estimate wheel HP. It isn't anything special, and shouldn't be used as a bible, but....based on your et and trap speed, it came up with around 200-220 rear (all) wheel HP. Very nice. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif BTW, I like your intake. Hope to see if it made much of a difference for me at the drags tonight.

burninrubber 12-27-2000, 08:46 AM COOL! AN AWD DYNO IN BOULDER! Now I have a place to test my all motor monster http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif. Hey Larry, wanna test my ram air against your intake? I need to modify a few things first, instead of just sticking in a pipe like yours http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/tongue.gif. Lets get a group of us together. SPShultzs (sp?), if you're reading this...we need to test your header http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif. This is so cool. Why am I the last to hear about it?
Bein' a giddy power freak,
Gary
SecretAgentMan 12-27-2000, 09:48 AM I know the feeling JJ, I experience it every single day. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif
But our euro specced scoobs are a tad faster even, 13.7/100 mph on the quarter, and 5.7 to 60. A mate of mine has been down to 5.2 with some serious abuse.
MY00 GT (full Scoobysport exhaust, Leda B...17" 215/40 F1's, MRT 22b adj. wing, induction kit from Pipercross....and...and...)

GranTourer 12-27-2000, 10:09 AM Hey Larry, did you get that turbo in the $1999 JC Sports group-buy? Man, I wouldn't mind buying one either. If you were to do it again, would you buy a complete kit w/
SAFC, 3"exhaust, etc. for $6000, or get in the JC Sports GB? I'm wondering if a project like this starts out cheap then goes expensive?
ImprezaRS dot com 12-27-2000, 03:26 PM mcgyver - I sent you an email with my phone number
gtguy - they sold any GB kits that were left when people backed out (only 1 or 2 of them chickened out) However, I think they are making an extra 10 kits for regular price, or maybe as low as $2,900 soon. And, my 5 psi is like 4 psi at sea-level.
Turbo4me - does that calculation adjust for altitude? I shoulda done a 14.3 at sea-level assuming 6% power loss at 6K feet (5 psi is like 4). Also, what difference does it make on the HP calc if the ET is 14.84 @ 95.2 my first attempt? Did it ask for car weight? (I am 210 lbs, car was 3/4 tank gas, 20 lbs cargo) I'm on a wireless modem at work, and can't visit the website easily till later.
burninrubber - at $100 for 3 runs or $175 an hour, I am gonna wait to visit the dyno till I get my Stage II airbox done, and then test Stage I and II together. I'll call you when I do it. Planned to use JJ's car for testing my intakes - maybe you can foot some of the bill to get your's tested http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif
SecretAgentMan - I'm only at 5psi right now. I'll be up to 7-8 lbs once I get either a manual boost controller or a programable ECU. At 6,000 feet that will be like 5.5 - 6 lbs at sea-level. That should get me into the 13's and drop 0-60 from 6.22 to the 5's http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif
GranTourer - This is the $1999 GB with 2.5" exhaust, AFC and RRFPR, and ACT clutch with 12lb flywheel. I only spent $6,100 on the following mod list, so I would do it all again:
5-7 psi IHI turbo kit with 6x18 inter-cooler (stock 10:1 pistons), Bell 20007 rising rate fuel pressure riser and hi-flow fuel pump, APEXi AFC, Autometer boost gauge and EGT gauge, ACT performance clutch pressure plate, 12lb flywheel, JC Sports custom made one-piece 2.5" SS exhaust with Aerospeed "Bomb", KYB AGX adjustable struts and Tein springs, FHI 20mm rear sway bar for WRX, front strut tower bar, 205/55x16 RE730 tires or 225/50x15 BFG-R1 for autocrossing, SS brake lines, SYMS short shifter with stiffer CUSCO shifter linkage bushings, CUSCO muffler hanger bushings, and STi hi-performance tranny mount.
Flatline 12-28-2000, 03:16 PM Hey Larry, quick question. What made you go with the JC kit instead of say Shiv's kit?
01 Black RS 12-28-2000, 03:25 PM sounds like it pulls pretty hard, I can't wait till I get my Ludespeed turbo in, I'll post up my results when I get it installed.
ImprezaRS dot com 12-28-2000, 10:54 PM Flatline - Cost was a big issue in deciding on the JC IHI kit. I had already done most of the mods to suspension, shifter, tires, etc. and didn't have another $6K left laying around for a Vishnu. And I like to think the JC Sports Group Buy kit was kinda mine and Diz's idea. I approached Joe while at a group meet on 9/16/00 about doing an affordable turbo kit like the one Diz had - what he was calling the "autocross turbo kit". 10 days later JC had the group buy, and 10 days after that it was on my car! I got the labor free for doing the install instructions.
Reliability was another issue. The $6K vishnu setup didn't include a clutch (neither did JC) which I would need to add. Adding a cluth to a cheaper kit would be more affordable. Then with a clutch I could run 10-12 psi with the Vishnu but it would make things break faster, and frankly, I'm not spending $6K on a vishnu just to play with only 5-7 psi to keep reliability!
Did you see everything I got on my car for the cost of a vishnu turbo kit and ECU? I feel like I did pretty well! I have a well balanced and very drivable car as a few passengers have posted about it here and there...
