View Full Version : Testimonial: Reliability of Vishnu Turbo Kit

Ok... so let me say at first I have never doubted this kit for a minute... but last night was a pretty trying experience.

I had to visit my dad's house in Homestead, FL (about 70 miles of where I live in Ft. Lauderdale). Yesterday we had a super long and bad rainstorm which I think dropped at least 16 inches of rain. Well in Florida this rain dosen't drain very well and stacks up quickly. Anyway, I ended up driving through about 8-12 inches of water (car is still at stock height) for about 1/2 mile to leave his house. Well when the car finally waded it's way out of the water I knew something was wrong. The car was bogging bad. EGTs were off the chart... I thought maybe it was just some water in the system somewhere. So I tried driving it a little... EGTs got worse. I ended up in a gas station under the hood poking around. Funny thing was at idle the car seemed fine.

Well I couldn't really get to the wires to check them out and see if they were dry. Not enough lighting available. So I had to limp the car home. And she made the 70 mile trip just fine. The car was retarding the timeing a whole bunch because of all the extra unburnt fuel it was seeing at the O2 sensor. I encountered no knock whatsoever. So having to run on just 3 firing cylinders wasn't to traumatic, but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone.

Needless to say the car is fine... I just need to some light and to check the plugs and all is well again. Just needed to dry out.

For any of those who haven't bought the kit yet because they are worried about how reliable it is during a failure. Don't even worry about it! The two times this kit has been tried, it passed with flying colors.

First time was just after I hooked up the turbo, I forgot to reconnect the O2 sensor wire (slipped my mind) and the car ran rich, but she ran just fine.

Second time was this incident, and I can say I believe the car came through with flying colors.

The only thing I was told by Shiv was to keep a spare magnetic pickup with me in the car, just in case, as it's really the only possible point of failure in the system. But I don't think I'll ever have to deal with that... course it's become a permanent part of my in-car toolkit just in case! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif Never can be to careful.

if you ingested water, you could have bent some valves.

here's to hoping everything is fine once dry!

Yep... I didn't ingest any water because I am running the GReddy air filter from the kit... it sits just under the passenger hood vent.

Water in the engine was my first fear... but nothings bent... all is good in the land of Subaru. I've been reassured that had it been water (too much) in the engine the car would be over... so no worries about that. Worse I did yesterday was steam clean the inside of my engine a little if any water at all got inside the intake.

This is specifically why I don't suggest anyone connect up the bumper vent to a hose that runs into the intake. Should you hit a big ass puddle it's going in.

Like I said though... it was just a wet plug. So no harm done.

what is a magnet pick up?

The magnetic pickup is the part of the kit that reads the signal from the crank trigger in the car... this is how the TEC gets an accurate reading of engine speed (RPM)... you asked what a crank trigger is...

This is a crank trigger:

This is a Magnetic Pickup and it's mount for the TEC Kit:

This is it installed in the car:

Hope this helps... if you want to see more of the install check it out here:

Nick - I'm glad no damage was done. Remember your car isn't a submarine http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smile.gif.

Remember the line "Who's the U-boat commander?" From what movie?

Colin, I think if you get water inside the combustion chamber, you don't bend valves. You bend rods. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif
