Howdy,

Yesterday I was driving on the freeway in my WRX wagon. There was some heavy rush hour traffic but I managed to pull away from the pack to a nice clear spot. This Integra GS pulls up next to me and we go - I smoke him. Then I slow down for more traffic and my exit to another freeway. He finally catches up, pulls ahead of me in the right lane traffic and begins pulling serious Gs on the circular ramp. Somehow, even with my stock RE92's, I keep right with him. Then we are on the freeway again and he takes off. I beat him again no problem, but there is traffic ahead so I slow down. Well, he continues to drive like a nut, whipping in and out of lanes and traffic, cutting people off, serious tail gating and going at least 100mph when everyone else is going 70.

I started to feel really pissed and really guilty. This guy was obviously not a pro driver, and his "post ass-whipping" macho BS driving could have easily wasted him and some poor law abiding citizens in a nasty and stupid pile up.

I guess I am writing to see what you all think. Maybe I'm getting old. They say when we get older we are more able to imagine the consequences of our actions. I'm 39 and I just don't think that people with fast cars should drive in a way that endangers other people who are just minding their business going home from work. I guess I had no way of knowing this guy would take losing so hard (or like a jerk), but I am hesitant to race someone on the freeway again. I was just having fun, but I guess some people take it too seriously. In retrospect I think I was really stupid.

This is going to be tough because I seem to be getting a lot of attention in this car and even though I imagine myself to be somewhat "older and responsible," I'm not quite mature enough to always accept that knowing I am faster than someone is enough!

Hey I'm 19 and if traffic conditions don't allow speeding then i won't. and i hate it when liek you siad some a$$hole thinks he is beating just because he is driving unsafe it just pisses me off royaly. anyway just wanted to let you know it's not you getting old it's just good common sense.

Hi Hades, please don't think I was saying that anyone who is young doesn't know how to drive and/or drives dangerously!

no no i wasn't thinking that at all i was just stating that even the majority of the younger crowd knows how to handle traffic there are jsut a few bad apple sout there that ruine it for the rest of us you know? but honestly no offense taken.

Maybe he just stole that car and was trying to get away as fast as possible?

A stolen car in Detroit? I'm not sure. With three new casinos and our new baseball stadium, there are so many good jobs, nobody needs to steal cars any more!

I agree with safety first. I like to go really fast, but only when all the variables are stacked in favor of me surviving. I much prefer getting out in the country, and hammer some twisty road, over racing through crowded freeways. Around here most people are afraid of the big G-force in the turn. Which is surprising since ther are so many lovely twisty roads around here.

And if some idiot doesn't know when he's been beat.. then piss on them, no skin of my back. If I've been properly stomped, I congratulate the victor, no questions asked.

In retrospect I think I was really stupid.


There's a start. Remember that next time and it'll be one less (*&#$%(*& race on public highways that the rest of us have to watch out for.

I think it's as much a Subaru thing as it is everything else. Good, common sense and rational thought are a couple of the things that drew me to this car. I think that Subie owners in general are capable of mentally perceiving things more quickly and in different ways then the folks who buy the other brands of cars. My point is that you, me and probably (hopefully) the other Subie owners can perceive, evaluate and react to risks quicker and more appropriatley then most of the people who chose the other brands.

It is weird in Dallas when i use to race people they would be cool about it. We would race up to 60 maybe in a 45 then slow down. We might even pull into a parking lot and talk about the cars. But then I moved into the Woodlands. A town of rich pricks and their kids. So when I race now I race to 60 and normally wup them but they keep going after my brakes are on, I am pretty sure they think they won. And when they pass me at like a 100 in a 45 they flick me off. Pricks!

Oh yeah, one other thing. When I drive fast I don't nessessarily race. I belive that on the street a margin for error must ALWAYS be kept.

alot if not almost all the street racers i come across are kids. mom bought their honduh and they bought their mods. so that leaves them with the insurance deductable to pay and not much else. plus i have seen em driving pretty bad here too. IMO there are and arent times to open it up and show someone whats up. late late at night is a good time when there is no one out and the roads are open. thats the time to race or showoff. IMO. maybe its just me...

Donjaun - that was harsh, but you are right. Even though I didn't drive fast around other cars, it doesn't matter - it was still stupid. Next time someone pulls up next to me like that, I'll ignore them completely.
