I was wondering what happens to a turbo which is set to spool up at 2300RPMs if one is driving at a cruising speed of 65 and RPMs of 2900-3000?
Does it run continually? Does it only spool up during acceleration?
I am thinking of saving for the IHI turbo from JC sports, but if I will be running the turbo at cruising speed it may not be worth the wear and tear.
Thanks for all of your help.
Tom

I have the same turbo you are talking about. Don't worry, turbos need load to build boost, so it won't be spooling while you are just cruising.

If you have a boost gauge you'll be able to tell. Anytime the guage goes from vacuum to pressure the turbo is boosting regardless of speed/rpm's.
The turbo is always spinning....even at idle....it's just not producing boost until the guage shows pressure.

Thanks guys!
Tim,
What other electronic gadgets are you planning to add, or have added to the turbo kit. It seems that Larry has gone full out on his turbo set up. But going full out sort of negates the price advantage of the kit. No?
Thanks again for your response.

No no no, you got it wrong. The price advantage of the kit is what paid for all the gadgets!
As for the cruising speed question - I can turn on cruise control and typically the AFC says it stays under 15-16% throttle position even with hills at over 90mph. Boost never kicks in although the PSI will often rise from -20 to -5 and the turbo compressor will start to whine occasionally, and the BOV will activate regularly with fluctuations.
Speed stays dead on like stock though with cruise control on - and I get now 29-30 mpg on the highway driving at a brisk pace!

Good point! Sometimes my hands type faster than my brain thinks! http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/redface.gif
Larry, someone mentioned it before in another post, but what did you do with your intake? Did you have to swap it for a different intake? Then the question becomes...which one?
Thanks for your reply.
- Still loving the WOT sounds of Larry's Homegrown Intake....

The two piece Larry's intake that I took off my car when I got the turbo is being donated to iClub (Imprezers Forester), and ships out tomorrow when he sends me his mailing address. If I didn't live at 6,000 feet, I probably woulda never needed a turbo - but with intake and exhaust installed up here, the best we can expect is to regain sea-level horsepower, while you guys are 25-30 HP more with the same mods.
I now have a Aerospeed pod filter connected directly to the turbo inlet pipe. There is NO room for any intake, as the inlet to the turbo is only a few inches long. I plan to install one of my MY97-99 cold-air filters that I am supposed to start shipping next week. But, I spent all my money on the turbo and have to pay back $400 on the flywheel before I can do any more mods. See the "mymods" page on my site and you'll see a 3" duct drawing cold air from the front bumper to my pod air filter. That still helps a bit.
