Hi all, I've searched and haven't found much on this...

How many miles have the 4EATs generally lasted before failure/malfunction, what kind of malfunctions occur most frequently, and how much do those malf's cost?

What is the outlook for the longevity of the 5EATs on the '05 models, specifically the '05 LGT?

My wife's looking at the '05 Legacy GT and she really likes the 5EAT on it (sportshifting and all), but I'm concerned about repairs costs down the road as we're planning on keeping this car as long as we can (100s of thousands of miles).

From what I know about manual transmissions repairs are fairly straightforward (replace a clutch, flywheel, gearset) but with autos you basically have to replace the whole tranny, is that true?

Many thanks for any help :)

Well... With 5 speed MT's.. they go through them like crazy in the WRX's. The auto's typically last indefineately with common sense maintenance. Trans cooler, good synthetic oil, etc. Should last virtually forever.

The local Subaru machanic and IMO a real machanic said that ATs are almost bullet proof compared to any manual driven by anyone who doesn't know how to drive. Seems to me he is correct. I have many friends who have in excess of 100,000 miles on a Suby transmission without any problems.
