Could someone please tell me why it's so important to have an ej22t oil pump, with an ej22t block. Is there really that much difference?I'm having a motor built soon and would like to know before it goes together........Thanks Alan...........

The ej22t has oil squiters which require a higher psi pump, the only real difference between the two pumps is a washer in the higher psi unit. I cant remember the second right now but this one should do well...

I thought the only ej22T in England was the 22B, and you have to own a 22B to buy a new block. Also, its rumored that the 22b did not have oil squirters, but some people say its the same block as the USDM ej22T but with different internals, because the 22B has an 8.0:1 cr while the USDM ej22T has an 8.1:1 cr.

Did I loose ya?

I bought a ej22t from the states and had it shipped over, your right about the 22b block not having oil squirters.I was told the ej22t block was the best one to start with,i'm also stroking it to a 2.35...............Alan

Personally,
I would cap the oil squirters. That is what I am going to do on mine. They don't aid much in cooling and they create a lot of extra friction. There is a good reason they took them out of the 22b. Oh, and they fall out as well. I found 3 in my oil pan when I took apart my block:confused:

Hahah never heard of that... that would be a very lame way to have a motor go.

toto,
It is very common with both the EJ22T's and the old closed deck EJ20G's. If you do a search on Legacy central or hit any of the boards down under, guys talk about it being pretty common...

Any info on capping the oil squrter system?

subiekid,

The 22b has a closed deck EJ22 block, which is a completely different casting to the EJ22T block.

As to capping the oil squirters; I would just unbolt the squirters, find some bolts with the same thread and threaded length and use these to block the oil squirter holes. I would use a washer and some threebond to ensure a good seal, and maybe some locktite 648 on the thread to help keep the bolt in situ. The thread is so small that you will need to be careful not to strip the block thread when torquing them up.

I have used Locktite 648 to secure the oil squirters in my latest motor, that should help keep the squirters in place for a while. :)

Incidentally, I managed to source a couple of sets of unused oilsquirters for my projects from a rally/race engine building operation that had removed them and capped the feeds when preping a couple of blocks for competition use. So I know that there are at least some competition engines out there running closed deck blocks with the oil squirters removed. :)

Hmm, everyone on here kept saying that it was the same block but with different internals. I was thinking it might be different because you have to own the car to get a new block.

So how is the casting different? do you have some pictures? Also, do you know if the v3 wrx heads can be moded to have the 8k redline like the 22B? I was told that the 22b has version 3 heads with a few different parts, I am guessing the cams are different. Is there anything else in the heads that is different?

The 22b EJ22 block is quite different to the EJ22T block. EJ22T takes a phase one crank with central thrust bearing, 22B EJ22 takes a phase two crank with thrust bearing at main bearing nearest flywheel. I am suprised that "everyone on here" failed to notice the change in location of the thrust bearing. Maybe, unlike myself, "everyone on here" have not had the chance to dismantle a 22b engine block? :)

The 22B will run STI version 4 heads. The 22b is based on the STI Version 4 Type R. I don't believe the cams are different from regular STI V4 Type R cams. The increase in low to midrange torque the 22b exhibited over the 2 litre STI v4 was, I believe, down to the extra cylinder capacity and the IHI VF23 turbo.

I don't think Subiekid can speak for "everyone" on this board. Myself and Dennis have long challenged the claim that they were the same blocks as "everyone" claims. The EJ22T was the "basis" for the 22B's EJ22G, but as has been mentioned, the EJ22G is a phase II engine with different thrust bearing location...

SO, if the oil squirters were capped would one still need the higher pressure ej22t oil pump?

is it possible to use an EJ22t pump on my ej22e block? I plan on building a high comp n/a motor.

Ya, but there is no reason too...

is there any way to be sure that they just wont fall? like weld them in? I am building up an ej22t and i want to keep my squirters, any suggestions?

Just use high temp thread lock. And if they fall out, it is not likely to be catastrophic. Like I said, they have been falling out of EJ22T's and EJ20G's since the beginning, and you hear of very few failures on these engines...

wow...never heard of oil squirters falling out before. I guess I'll be sure to use extra thread lock! And as far as the oil pump goes...the Subaru dealership told me that the ej22t oil pump had the same parts number as the pump on my ej25 (98 2.5rs) So they are full of crap? I'll be sure to buy the legacy turbo oil pump as well.

No, the shimed pump has been on a few RS I belive.

so those would be the DOHC heads of an EJ20G with better springs & retainers to a higher redline more reliably?

hhmm...so 98's have the same pump as the legacy turbo?

Cant say for sure as subaru swiches parts a lot, but I know two people with 98s have said they have the shimed pump.

so when I take it apart, what would I look for to tell which pump I have?
