View Full Version : Factory Paint Sealant? drftsub 05-01-2001, 10:18 AM Has anyone ever got this? is it worth it or is it crap? TIA for any help Poseidon 05-01-2001, 10:24 AM http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif Ahem... Sorry. Subarus (as well as nearly all other modern vehicles) already come from the factory with a clear-coated finish on top of the paint job. Anything extra has to be put on after it reaches the dealership. I suppose an extra coat or two of clear-coat would be helpful in protecting your paint job from rock chips, but "factory paint sealant" sounds like snake oil to me. Jordan drftsub 05-01-2001, 10:28 AM From the way they made it sound it is more like a wax type product, ( words out of the guys mouth were "you wont need to wax it for 5 years" ) it is supposed to carry some warrenty for 5 years against anything staining the paint etc. Nate macrac 05-01-2001, 10:46 AM It's a load of crap. Nothing, and I repeat, NOTHING will protect your car for 5 years. Even the BEST arcylic paint sealants/coatings will claim that the protection lasts for about 6-8 months - MAYBE a year of your car is garaged. Do yourself a favor and do it yourself. Check out this link to buy the same stuff the dealer will probably use on your car: http://www.properautocare.com/megsno20pols.html paul42 05-01-2001, 10:48 AM Go to http://www.carbuyingtips.com/ for the truth about the "factory paint sealant" and other dealer scams. Normally this is a very high profit item for the dealer, and just another way to squeeze some more money out of you TimStevens 05-01-2001, 11:24 AM macrac, any experience with that particular Maguiars product? I've used their stuff before and it's good, but I'm a little unsure about putting a "sealant" on my new WRX. Just the same, I'd love to have some sort of extra protection for my thin paint... -tim macrac 05-01-2001, 11:37 AM Tim, No - I have not used the Maguiars product. I used and swear by a product called "Liquid Glass" - Basically the same stuff as the Maguiars just a little more expensive. It's an acrylic coating... The more layers you put on - the more protection you get. (But now this tread is starting to sound like another thread that currently running in this forum.) http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum1/HTML/022243.html Check out Liquid Glass' site: http://www.liquidglass.com I've used this product on my last 3 cars with excellent results. (I feel that it really helps to preserve the luster and quality of the paint over time.) But keep in mind that I'm not an expert - it's just MHO. from comparing the luster of my cars with others from the same years. (My cars seem to have better paint quality and less fading than other of the same age.) drftsub 05-01-2001, 12:05 PM OK so the genral idea is that its crap and to not do it. Cool that is what I wanted to know. Now what about the interior scotch gaurd stuff? ( I have 2 toddlers so this could be good if it works ). Thanks, Nate paul42 05-01-2001, 12:26 PM WalMart sells cans of Scotch Guard at a very decent price. It will take two or three cans to do the whole interior - somewhere around $20. I use the exterior version of Scotch Guard myself. I think it gives you a little better protection. The dealer is quite willing to do the same thing (for about $500). It is just another way for them to jack up their profits. Poseidon 05-01-2001, 12:33 PM Again... You can buy Scotch-Guard spray in your local supermarket (for about $4 a can) and do it yourself. These "added protectants" are all just a way for the dealer to make more money off of you with very little effort. Seriously, how would you even know if they actually sprayed Scotch-Guard on the interior? It is not unknown for dealers to charge premium prices for services they never actually perform. Jordan drftsub 05-01-2001, 12:36 PM ok cool , thanks for the help guys, just lookin to find out if this was the "wonder product" that they said it was. Nate Poseidon 05-01-2001, 12:50 PM Nate, if you really want a "miracle product", find someone to treat your interior with DuPont Teflon stain protection. It's expensive, and must be done by a professional, but it really works. They tried to sell us this treatment when my wife and I bought a new mattress, but it just didn't seem worth the money. You might check with a local auto upholstery shop and see if they offer this. Jordan |
