I am planning on switching to synthetic in a few hundred miles and I was wondering what filter I should use. i.e. are the K&Ns worth the money, etc.

thanks,
eric

Wrong forum, but yes K&N or PureOnes are among the 'best' filters

I use a PureOne and it does the job. Plus they are easy to find.

I using Denso oil filter from an online store (http://www.intakeone.com/Subaru_intake/DENSOoilfilter_Subaru.html)
Ask Ka for a free Oil Drain Plug Gasket for the replacement if you need.

OEM or a PureOne PL14460 for NT 4 cyl. engines. Both made by Purolator

Ordered 3 Amsoil filters  !

I have talked to these guys before, man, they go heavy on the Koolaid! The religion of oil...

I am almost convinced though to try Amsoil oil and go for the extended 20,000 drain interval  .

I am starting to buy their logic. Uh-oh!

Their oil may last 20k miles (doubtful), but 20k miles of built up impurities and wear particles?

No, if you search for threads here or go to www.bobistheoilguy.com you will see that many synthetic oils go 10000+ miles without an issue. The oil does last.

You are supposed to change the filter every 7000 or 6 months or something like that. That solves the impurities issue. Their filters hold 20-50% more wear particles and have the same single and multiple pass test levels as PureOne and Mobil1, the two best out there.

I have read posts by guys who ran their dino for 10000 and had good viscosity and very low wear metal levels. A good synth will do better.

Oil and filters are like politics and religion, no one will ever agree on one brand. OEM (Purolator) and Mobil dino 5w30 every 3K for me.

any national or New England chains that carry Purolator? Their web page mentions VIP Discount Auto, but the chain in Maine and NH doesn't carry them. Maybe there's another VIP Auto...

Subaru OEM filters are best. Excellent quality, very good filtering media, proper by-pass pressure, good construction.

Denso filters mentioned above are for the H-6, with concave endplate. Risky!

They are very good, yes, but the best...? No. But you can't go wrong with them
