View Full Version : Is service dept really using synthetic oil like I paid for?

I was thinking about taking my car in for an oil change and I was thinking about providing my own synthetic oil. I am scared that they will just take my Mobil 1 synthetic and just use normal oil in my car. Is there a way that I can tell if they actually used my Mobil 1? I don't want to sound like a jerk and tell them that I want to watch them put in my Mobil 1. Any ideas?

I definitely wouldn't put it past them to put in the regular stuff and keep your oil, places do it all the time. I know people that ask for their empty bottles back, but that's still not a total guarantee. You could do it yourself, it's sooo easy. ;)

if you really don't want to do it yourself ask to watch. I brough my car for its first oil change at the service dept. too and I watched the whole thing.

I started to change my own oil after the first trip tho. Way better to change it yourself. You can make sure you put the right oil and the right amount in too! Its a 15 mins job if you know exactly what to do!

I have always had that fear too. I bring mine in because it is only $14 but I am thinking about doing it myself.

If the service dept. guys are jerks, they're probably gonna use regular oil and take your synth oil for themselves. I don't think there's way you can tell, unless you actually see them pouring the bottle contents in your engine.

Exeter has put in the synth oil that I have brought up to them.

There really is no way to know unless you go to a Jiffy Lube type place and see it with your own eyes. Requesting the empty bottles isn't assuring either as they could just transfer your oil into a new container. Oil changes on Subarus are C A K E, please consider doing it yourself. Writeups for it are on here or scoobymods.com.

Especially with a Fumoto drain valve (just flip the lever and the oil is on its way out), oil changes on a Subie are very easy. Helps to use a pair of rubber gloves too.
Changing it yourself you save $$ and have peace of mind you know what went into your engine. :)

Maybe that cavity that the dentist fixed wasn't a cavity at all!!!!!!

99.9% of people can be trusted, but 50% of prople don't trust anybody.

Food for thought.

I ran into a discussting thing several months ago. I was looking to purchase some Mobil 1 Syn gear oil and noticed two bottles had different colored caps. I opened one with a green cap and smelled it and opened one with the silver Mobil cap. Totaly different smell. Someone have taken the Mobil 1 gear oil out and replaced it with some other oil but, forgot to replace the correct cap back on the bottle. Sad isn't it that we have to deal with some types of people. I now check my 5 quart bottle of mobil engine oil tobe certain the cap has not been removed. ed

Subaru had an official TSB out warning dealers not to use synthetic oil. Several years later they softened their position and issued another TSB permitting the use of synthetic oil, provided change intervals are kept as recommended.
