View Full Version : Nitrous vs. Water Injection
ScreaminFast 07-19-2004, 11:43 AM Right now I have a WRXTuner Water Injection setup installed, hole drilled into my APS fmic pipe. I put the water pump in front of my small PC680 battery, but now I want to get a bigger battery. Also, I have a VF22, and I may switch to a 18G.
My main question is how would a small shot (say 25 or so) of Nitrous compare to tuning with the water injection? I would assume a little that it should prove better because in addition to cooling the air mix, it'll add the extra 25hp or so.
Second question is whether or not Nitrous would be too dangerous?
Thanks in advance :)
sonicowrx03 07-19-2004, 02:29 PM I almost went the same path. I want it Clarck to tune my car with water Injection because I want it to boost my 18g Turbo up.
Clarck did not recommend me installing the water injection for a reason, he said that despite the water injection could give you some extra hp there was a real danger of destroying the engine in case of a malfuntion of the water injection. Basicly saying that when using water injection you are running higher boost levels and that you maybe be running too lean in case of a water injection failure causing the pistons or other internal parts to melt.
Macabre 07-19-2004, 04:07 PM So what if one of your fuel injectors fail? or your pressure regulator? or pump? If you're dismissing a technology because it could break and cause damage, you shouldn't be driving your car at all!
ScreaminFast 07-19-2004, 07:12 PM yea, as with any mod, you assume the risk of breaking something...
Jon [in CT] 07-19-2004, 09:06 PM I wonder whether a "Nitrous" system has ever malfunctioned and trashed an engine.
sonicowrx03 07-20-2004, 04:52 AM Macabre,
You are correct, anything could break in the car, from a spark plug to the timing belt, you never know. I guess that the best popel to ask are the people that have one for a long time.
ScreaminFast 07-20-2004, 08:14 AM Does anyone know if it's harder to tune for nitrous than for water injection?
BadTrip 07-20-2004, 11:35 AM I've been wondering about this myself.....because most of the guys I've talked to about nitrous say that it really is farily safe as long as you retard your timing enough to avoid pre-ignition. ....yet almost all of the tuning that's done WITHOUT nitrous involves advancing timing.....doesn't it?
So......if you had a Stage 2 car (up-pipe, TBE, UTEC, etc) and had it tuned for that set-up......then added nitrous......wouldn't you be losing some of the gains from the original modifications after re-tuning for nitrous?...i.e.; retarding timing?
cronic 07-20-2004, 11:42 AM IMO Nitrous is a power adder while WI is a saftey buffer..
wrx plus 07-20-2004, 11:54 AM I've been running the aquamist 2d water injection system for over a year now. I don't think i would ever run without it. I had given thought to running nitrious before I went to water injection, but through research found that adding 50% methanol to the water gave me more power, (ie; meth is fuel and meth burns colder) .
If it's just having room for your new battery, that's easy, mount your pump in the fender and attatch it to the bottom of the metal plate that your battery sits on, there it is protected from the severe conditions in the engine bay and will last much longer.

WI is an octane improver..
wrx plus 07-20-2004, 01:03 PM Yes, but when running water injection with methanol, it is both, and when properly set up it can feel like a second turbo kicking in.
Macabre 07-20-2004, 01:03 PM double post.. new forum version and I'm a noob all over again.
ScreaminFast 07-20-2004, 05:02 PM hmmm....got me thinkin all over again.
