View Full Version : need a new oil pan
nelybarg 07-19-2004, 04:29 PM i need a new oil pan for my 02 wrx wagon. somehow i managed to overtighten the drain plug and stripped out the threads in the pan. called my dealership and they want 80 for the pan + 170 to put it on. i checked subaruparts.com, they list 2 different pans for my car, so i dont know which one i should get.
also, while i was looking up under the car at the pan, it appears that its only held on by several screws. is there a gasket in-between the pan and the motor? how hard would it be for me to replace the pan myself? thanks
North Ursalia 07-19-2004, 04:40 PM It's sealant between the pan and the block. There is a small round gasket other than the sealant where the pan meets the block- get that too. As to which pan you need? That's what your VIN # is for... call them or your local dealership to find out what pan you need for your car.

nelybarg 07-19-2004, 04:49 PM Thanks for the response. when i spoke to the dealership they told me only one pan was available thats why i'm confused why subaruparts.com has 2 listed. is the pan fairly easy to replace or should i let the dealership do it?
Neil
edit: heres the link, hope it works.

Tim Sanderson 07-19-2004, 08:26 PM Pretty darn easy. You will need to jack up the engine and remove a dust shield on the back to get to all the bolts.
dorifto88 07-20-2004, 05:22 AM nelybarg, if you do the install by yourself could you please do a write-up?

tim, i'm curious about jacking up the engine. does this mean i'll have to unbolt it from the engine mounts? also, about this dust shield, i'm guessing its metal, how difficult will it be to remove?
1 final question, it looks as though there's bar thats positioned underneath the pan, somewhat to the rear. do i need to remove the bar to get the pan out, or can i manuever the pan enough without removing the bar.
thanks for all the replies.
i'll see about doing a write up. i'm not that prolific a writer. i'll see if i can get some pics too.

Hayes 07-20-2004, 11:44 AM There are oversize self starting oil drain plugs availiable for many cars. I've used them. They have the same thread only slightly oversize for a very good fit. Maybe autoparts has them to fit your suby

im not asking for a step by step breakdown lol, i just need a basic step by step process (well, i guess i am asking for a step by step breakdown =( )
yah i know, its a huge thing to ask, but a local shop quoted me 200 dollars for install alone...
help a brotha out!
thanks :D

Tim Sanderson 07-20-2004, 07:55 PM I'd drop the headers at the head, pull off the pitch stop, remove the two engine mount nuts/washers and jack it up under the tranny. The dust shield is on the bottom but I think it bolts on from the rear. I'd also suggest a universal socket not a universal on a socket but an actual universal socket. that and a couple extansions should make it pretty easy. YOu should also unbolt the dipstick tube(top of engine).
unbolt the pan and clean off the bottom of the block with a razor blade and some brake cleaner on a rag. Be careful because the block edges are sharp(so is the razor). THere's some stuff by permatex called "the right stuff" that I really like. NAPA carries it. Use that or similar to make a bead on the new pan and slap it up on there.
I don't know what the torque specs are off hand but they are small bolts so it's probably 8ft. lbs or so.
good luck and let us know how it went.

i checked with all the major parts stores in my area, apparrently the m20 bolt used in the pan is the largest available and there isnt a self tapping plug large enough to fit.
sorry to dissapoint all about the write up, but i took the chickens way out and had the dealership do the work. the maintenance guy i spoke with said pretty much what Tim had said about undoing the motor mounts and jacking up the motor and all to remove the pan. I dont have the tools/equipment, nor the know how to do that kind of work. good thing about taking it in, while they had it, they decided to fix some recall for the 4EAT that i didnt even know was out there. had something to do with it popping out of park. while they did it, they threw in a transmission flush for free. so i guess that worked out.
total cost including parts, labor, misc fees was right at 300.
