View Full Version : Turbo XS STI intake Questions
ninjaboy76 07-23-2004, 02:12 AM For those of you out there with the Turbo XS intake system for the STI, I have a few questions. First, do you really notice the 10 HP gain that Turbo XS claimed on its website? In other words is it worth it? How hard was the install? Did you remove the silencer, stuff like that? What changes if any did you notice in your gas mileage? Any other info or pics of the install would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason
WRX Jim 07-23-2004, 02:19 AM it took 10 minutes to install.
it feels better, defintly a gain in the butt dyno
it was worth it for how much, makes the factory BOV louder and therefore no need to spend the money on an aftermarket one
gas milage? I dont drive the STI enough to know.. when i drive it its hard driving, so its hard to say.
LeadPipe 07-23-2004, 03:13 AM Is this the shorty we are talking about?

They only make a shorty.

we don't have a BOV stock, it's a bypass, and the noise I from the intake, i think it's something like the air recirculating or something
i'm putting my aps cai on today and I'll be able to tell you more
TheMadScientist 07-23-2004, 11:48 AM I have the perrin shorty. I felt an increase in the top end pull after the install. I drive ~90miles a day and I still see ~300miles to a tank depends on how I drive.
Hey Golfa BOV, BPV they all do the same thing there is really no reason to make a stink over what it is called.

pestysti 07-23-2004, 11:49 AM my shorty deffintly worth it, you can take out all that factory stuff and save a little weight (but only like 4-5 lbs) you can hear the turbo spoolin better and the but dyno likes it.

Focus4 07-23-2004, 05:03 PM i left the factory stuff in because i think the ram air part sends colder air right to where the filter is. The install is really easy took me 10 mins, and that includes trying to find a ratchet extension pieace. Its like 2 screws and 2 bolts... thats it. Sounds cool but its definitly not as loud as a BOV, but it does make some swoooshing :) I have noticed no negative effects so far, and the car seemed to have had a bit better throttle response.
It's probably because of the UTEC and the TBE, but I can't say I noticed any performance improvement. It certainly sounds faster..
Since I'm interested in the effects on the entire curve, I wish they would post the whole chart, instead of just the peak gain.
DaHellWidU 10-16-2004, 06:05 PM i have an 05 sti and i have a worx tuning bov, and txs shorty intake
and it threw a cel, so i reset the ecu, made sure everything was tight, everything was fine for a bout 20 miles, then cruise light started to flash, 15 miles later, cel came on again. didnt get a chance to pull a code yet, any ideas guys im runnin 50\50 on the worx. :(

My guess is you are still venting too much on the WORX. Try setting it to recirc more and I would guess it goes away. You might just set it all the way to 100% recirc at first and verify that then you can back it down from there and keep testing that way.

Focus4 10-16-2004, 08:02 PM you have probably already done this but just make sure the intake is clamped down well and that you didn't put the MAF sensor back in the wrong way...
DaHellWidU 10-17-2004, 04:33 AM i will set the vent to 100 recirculate tom morn. um, i just bought gas a few mins ago comming home from a party and i had drive 40 miles for the car to realize i had a full tank. how weird. ill set bov and reset ecu, if i get it again, ill head over to autozone, and pull a code. thanks guys for your help greatly appreciated. :)

Actually, they don't.
The factory BPV is a single port valve, meaning it is operated solely by the vaccuum pressure on it's diaphram. Most BOVs are dual port, which means they work on the pressure differential between the front and back of the manifold.
If you're running 15psi and let off, say down to 5 psi, they blow the excess,
whereas the stock valve won't open until you are pulling enough vaccum to open it.
A dual port valve is better for your turbo, and works a bit 'faster'.

BLACK02WAGON 10-17-2004, 01:36 PM I recently installed the TurboXS FMIC and the shorty intake. I can't say anything to power as I did more than one install at once. It is a simple install and takes no time at all but fitament can be an issue. The filter contacts the IC piping, the brake distribution block, and the hood. This obviously comes from the IC and wouldn't be an issue if you don't have it. I am headed to TurboXS on the 29th so I will speak to them about it and see if they have a fix. Otherwise I highly recommend it.
DaHellWidU 10-18-2004, 01:01 AM still got the check engine light, i dont know whats causeing it, either the intake or the worx bov, so tom im taking off the intake, and running just the bov. to see. also ive notice when i clutch that my revs go higher, is that a sign of anything?

Umm the stock BOV/BPV works off a pressure dif across the diaphram. The second port is part of the mounting flange. Take one off and have a look.
If you mean it is a single port after it is modded then maybe. After it is modded then one of the ports is always at ambient pressure to help make the pressure diff across the diaphram greater when under boost.

DRNWAGN 10-18-2004, 09:29 AM I am running the txs intake on my Fxt and have seen no problems. As stated it is about a 10-15 minute install. Gains were nice and I could feel the difference on th buttdyno. No cells what so ever. That is odd because I have not heard of anyone having cell problems with the intake or bov. Did you bump the maf or something? I heard that you have to make sure that it is sitting level on the top but do not know why. In any case, there are alot of options out there. I will be replacing mine with a Perrin version with in the next week or so. Just want the red tubing for the added bling (lots of other red tubing under there already)
scooby24 10-18-2004, 09:50 AM I can't say about the TXS shorty but I have the GPMoto shorty and a Greddy Type-s Set up for 100% recirc and have not throw a CEL and HAVE noticed a gain in top end. Not to mention it sounds like a fuggin beast now. SHHHHHHHHHH POWWWWWWWWW.
DaHellWidU 10-25-2004, 12:44 AM i went to autozone and pulled my cel code and got p1153 which i believe is the front o2 sensor, im heading over to the dealer to have it checked out, think theyll replace it under warranty? i removed the bov and intake, looks like nothing has been touched
T3RMIN4L 10-25-2004, 11:31 AM You might wanna check out some of the front 02 failure threads as alot of people (including myself) have replaced the front 02. Just as a note I also have a txs shortie.
DaHellWidU 10-25-2004, 11:46 AM my car is currently at the dealer getting fixed, how much did u pay for ur o2 sensor, mine is covered under warranty, u think the txs coulda done it?
T3RMIN4L 10-25-2004, 01:11 PM I payed 200 dollars and it took about 10 minutes to replace it. Since I was runnign a stealthback exaust a shortram intake and a boost controller I thought it best to pay for it myself and not get the dealer involved. As for whetehr it could have doneit I dont know but I do know there have been alot of sti 02's sensor failures. Maybe there is a link maybe there isnt.
