View Full Version : Best HID Look Alike Bulbs? want to replace my h1, h3, and 9007 eshtog 07-23-2004, 05:09 PM I want a slight blue tint, also what kind of bulbs do I need if I want to change my turn signal bubls I have a 05 wrx Kenji815 07-23-2004, 05:49 PM try hiper industry... (brand: polar) bulb.. they are more white.. and not so much blue.. but personally.. i would save up for set of HID.. I have 2005 too and i thought about changing bulb.. but i just gave up the idea and just use the money and save it for HID eshtog 07-23-2004, 06:09 PM well new jdm hid headlights are around $900 bulbs are gonna cost like $80 MikeWRX-NJ 07-23-2004, 06:49 PM and the new bulbs are going to give you worse usable light while the jdm hids will make you wonder how you ever lived w/o a HID system. if you want a good bulb that won't make driving in the rain and on black pavement hell, get a set of philips blue vision bulbs. those are the only ones i used that seems not to take too much away from brightness. Mulder 07-23-2004, 07:02 PM Any blue-coated bulb will produce less usable light and more glare. The heavier the coating, the bluer the light output and the worse the actual light output. There are bulbs that will produce more light in the usable range and actually enhance visibility, such as the Sylvania XtraVision (not Cool Blues or Silverstars), Philips Hi-Visibility, Hella +50 etc. I don't know which if any are available in H1. If you really insist on getting blue bulbs, fine, just understand that they are for bling only and won't improve your lighting. sandgoose 07-24-2004, 01:30 AM www.hidstore.com they have everything, you replace your bulb with HID bulb that simple elijah25rs 07-24-2004, 03:41 AM www.hidstore.com they have everything, you replace your bulb with HID bulb that simple you wuh? CrazyMike13 07-24-2004, 11:41 AM PIAAs XTreme or Eurolight Xenon Crystals have a GREAT bluish, but not too blue shine. I have them on my car and wouldn't use anything else. WRXchickNJ 07-24-2004, 12:16 PM Any blue-coated bulb will produce less usable light and more glare. If you really insist on getting blue bulbs, fine, just understand that they are for bling only and won't improve your lighting. so if you wanted to replace your bulbs to get as close to HID output as possible w/o a blue tint, would the XtraVision be best? I was planning on changing them out on the 02 rex and was planning on buying the silverstars. My goal isnt so much bling but better visibility. Mulder 07-24-2004, 12:33 PM If you really want better visiblity then stay away from anything that says "HID-look", "Hyper/Super-White", "Cool Blue" etc. and has a visible blue coating. The Xtravisions are definitely worth trying and they also aren't as expensive as the so-called "premium" brand bulbs. Understand though, that no drop-in replacement bulbs are going to approach the light output of HIDs, especially with 9007s. You can also upgrade the headlight wiring to improve the output with whatever bulbs you have including stock ones. The factory wiring is marginal even for the 55W stock bulbs, and there is significant voltage drop on the ground side. Eliminating this drop wil make the lights noticeably brighter. eshtog 07-24-2004, 02:57 PM I dont know why you keep saying that the blue bulbs arent brighter, I had a 1998 accord that I put blue tint bulbs in and they were like 10 times brighter than my stock ones eastcoastbumps 07-24-2004, 03:23 PM I dont know why you keep saying that the blue bulbs arent brighter, I had a 1998 accord that I put blue tint bulbs in and they were like 10 times brighter than my stock ones The same bulb would be 11x or 12x more usable light if it didn't have the blue coating on it. A blue coated halogen light will have less usable light than a clear or yellowish bulb. It is science, not oppinion. I'm just too lazy to find a source online to back it up. Thats why you see so many fog lights in yellow, rather than white or blue. Pete Mulder 07-24-2004, 03:28 PM From Daniel Stern's site, an excellent lighting resource- http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/blue/bad/bad.html http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/blue/good/good.html eshtog 07-24-2004, 03:29 PM well I bought some Mtec cosmo blue h1 and h3 bulbs, I am not goiing to replace the highbeams kenchan 07-24-2004, 03:31 PM From my experience, the H1's that came with the EDM's were probably the best illumination from a driver's perspective. kinda borning looking, but functional. :) Blue hue does not illuminate all that well from my experience. I was using PIAA xtreme superwhites. Now I use factory bulbs on the lowbeams and superwhite wedges. rabbitnutz 07-24-2004, 07:22 PM Piaa plasma GTX, they have a purple-ish low beam, and a superwhite highbeam.....these are they best bulbs available. get them, love them. dithergizzard 07-24-2004, 07:58 PM In response to the original question, here is an interesting link about bright non-HID bulbs: http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hl-filament-bulbs.htm.
