View Full Version : Cruise control has a speed limit?
MaWrXc 07-23-2004, 09:53 PM Not that I would necessarily reccomend someone trying this but if you are by chance on a nice clear 4-lane highway, try using cruise control above 90 mph. The car will slow down until you hit 90, then stay at 90. I found this a bit funny because 90 is still 25 mph faster than any legal speed limit that I am used to (I think it is 70 some places in Florida?).
Oh well, so much for leaving everyone in the dust using cruise control. I guess I'll have to use the pedals.
ride5000 07-24-2004, 11:11 PM you can use the accelerate function to go faster.
kinkinhood 07-24-2004, 11:28 PM Why are you using cruise control at that speed?
kaos200 07-25-2004, 12:41 AM yah lets just cruise at 100 and fall asleep
Alizarin 07-25-2004, 02:37 AM Old joke: "I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather... not screaming like the people in his car."
Psydotek 07-25-2004, 04:01 AM If you read the manual, you would have seen that there's an 89mph limit on cruise control. :)
[don't ask, it was one of the little tidbits that got stuck in my brain...]
BlackEyeII 07-25-2004, 08:28 AM I had noticed that. I run CC alot in the wee hours, on long streches so it bugs some times. You can use the accelerate function to go faster but it just seems to bleed back down to 85 or so for me. (Could be slight difference do to tire diameter)
photog72 07-25-2004, 11:05 AM I remember using cruise in my '93 RX-7 TT. It would also limit you to 90-95 MPH. I don't remember the exact speed. And, I lived in South Florida, traveled on the 75 mile straight road known as Alligator Alley (no turns, all straight, 70 MPH speed limit).
BTW, hitting 177 on the road was fun! I wasn't scared of crashing, I was scared of getting arrested for that type of speed.
Skylab 07-26-2004, 10:54 PM Corvette crusie control works at 160mph. (so I've heard)
One could install a divide by two logic chip into the speed sensor line to the cruise control and make it effective up to 178. But it might not be effective at lower speeds as I believe there's a lower limit too. So it would have to be a switched modification...
fragment 07-27-2004, 04:51 AM My 98 Legacy GT was also limited to 140 kph (89mph) just like my WRX. Annoyed me on a few occasions.

You should have been scared of hitting:
1)Wild hogs
2)Deer
3)Gators
4)Panthers
In that order.
Psydotek 07-27-2004, 01:04 PM Yeah, those panthers can be a real bitch at that speed...
fragment 07-27-2004, 01:38 PM I can tell you from personal experience, that at around 160mph, tumbleweeds become formidible targets
Took me weeks to get all the bits out of my lower rad

2)Deer
3)Gators
4)Panthers
In that order.
Considering that:
1)Alligator Alley has fenced the highway in.
2)Bridges that are essentially flat, have ducts for wildlife to pass under.
3)Death by wildlife hasn't been a major concern on that road since it was widened to 4 lanes.
I wasn't scared of your four points of contention.
See why my 3 points above ring true by reading this article (http://www.cegltd.com/story.asp?story=4760&headline=Design-Build%20Helps%20Take%20Bite%20Out%20of%20Alligator %20Alley). It even shows a fenced in section. Also, having driven the road over 100 times (working on one coast, living on the other for a few months), I was keenly aware of the conditions of the road when I made my high speed pass.
ydant 07-27-2004, 07:07 PM I always thought it was crazy to complain about CC being limited to 89mph until I drove through Kansas.
Uncle Scotty 07-28-2004, 03:41 AM I got my ass flamed off 2 years ago for posting my annoyance at the 89mph CC limit...
I know that in some places, a higher limit would really be nice for those long transits.
photog72 07-28-2004, 03:47 AM Also consider at one time that Montana had a speed limit that was "safe and reasonable."
