Hehehehehehe, I'm stoked! I can't wait to get going on this. It's a Deadbolt Monster TD05H-16G with compressor housing and exhaust turbine housing ceramic coating!

Isn't it pretty?

Wow......

That looks so sweet.

How much boost are you going to be running with that thing?

legacy92ej22t

I'm not sure yet. At the very least 16 psi. I hope to run 18 psi base but I'll have to see how the injectors handle it and what kinda EGT readings I get. At the track, we'll see. For short runs I may run 20-22 psi and pray the head gasket holds.

That is the same turbo boostjunkie had. I think his nasioc name was 2.5GT

Ha, did a search and found the thread.

I would be watching those EGT's. Do you have some way to add fuel, like an aftermarket ecu/piggyback?

07-25-2004, 10:53 AM
Ya, I know Jason (AKA Boostkunkie, 2.5GT). He wrecked his car and now my buddy Vikash (AKA VRG3) owns it. Jason had stock engine management and was running 18 psi without much trouble but his injectors were maxed out. I probably won't be running 20-22 psi, it's more wishfull thinking right now but we'll see.

I'm waiting on Kelley (Perfection Motorsports) to see what his stand alone engine management for the EJ22T is going to be priced. It's supposed to be similar to the Autronic but better. He's also going to be offering fuel rail and injector upgrades for the EJ22T so as soon as he gets everything locked down I may go that route. :)

I thought Boostjunkie had some sort of motor management?

Nope. He was using the stock ECU and an Apex-i S-AFC is all.

Matt,

I forgot to ask you last weekend, what is the size of your compressor housing on your 16G? Is it 9.8cm2 like on my EVO. There are so many versions of the 16G.

Later,

Chad.

Hey Chad! Uh, to be honost, I'm not actually sure. It's the same turbo that came on the 93-96 STI. TD05H-16G. It's a 'small' 16G not the 'large'. I'm in MD right now but when I get home I'll look at it more closely. :)

Hey, I'm not sure yet but I may be having a BBQ the Friday night before my meet on August 21st with some of the guys from the meet. If I do, you and Danny should come.

Fess,

Hey, ya I hope to. Deadbolt and MSR (CES dealer in the US) are currently working together on getting me a custom Boost Enhancement Plate (BEP) for the Deadbolt Monster 16G. Jerry at Deadbolt is going to make two, one for me and one for CES in Australia so that they can make more. :) Anyways, this has me on hold for the install. I hope to put it in within the next couple weeks though.

Thanks for the offer on help, I have so many people that want to help/see the swap that I may have an install party or something. :D Beers, wrenches and turbos. Can't get much better then that!

Matt,
Have you spoken to Vikash recently? I was at Cobb talking to Trey a few weeks ago and he said that he had gotten a bunch of the data dump that Vikash had done on the EJ22T ECU and was working on hacking it. He wasn't planning on making it into an Accessport product, but actually posting the maps and info as "shareware". Noah, one of Cobb's employees is currently running an EJ257 block w/EJ20G heads from a JDM Legacy and has the USDM EJ22T ECU running it all, thus the impetus to get something that is workable for this ECU. You might drop Vikash a line and see where this little collaboration stands.
And, of course, congrats on the TD05. Keep us up to date how it works out...

Cool, whenever you can make it is fine. We're probably going to be doing a shop thing too. I may rewire my O2 sensor and FCD, my buddy Scott might replace an axle and BAC5.2 is going resolder his FCD. Everybody wants to be running perfect for the meet. :)

I'm having trouble figuring out my housing size. How can you tell, is there a code or identifying numbers or something? I guess I can ask Jerry at Deadbolt, he would know.

Oh, by the way. Did you mention anything to Danny about the turbo install? If yes, did he seem interested in helping out?

Hey Matt,

Ya, I've talked to Vikash but he's been really busy with his master's thesis and I don't think he's been working on cracking the ECU much recently. I mentioned your post to him though and he was excited to hear that Trey was working on it and was planning on posting it as "shareware", so maybe he'll contact Trey and they can help each other. :)

Wow, Noah's running an EJ257 block, w/EJ20G heads, on an EJ22T ECU? Did they say how well it worked? I hope they can come up with something for our ECU, that'd be great as I'm going to need something to really utilize my setup.

I'm going to do a DIY write-up on the turbo install, up-pipe/EGT install and post it up for everyone to see. Hopefully everything goes smooth and I have it broke in before my meet later this month and the East Coast Subaru Shootout in September.

Noah's car is currently running but he's still on that teeny VF-11 (his EJ20G came from a Legacy) and he figures it is less than 200hp with that big 2.5l block. His EJ20G block threw a bearing shortly after he installed it and the EJ257 was the easiest/cheapest replacement to come by. He also has a gianormour FMIC and a custom reversed manifold along with a wasted spark conversion. All in all it is one real franken-subby.

What they told me was that the ECU and maps were pretty simple compared to the other newer ECU's. Noah said they were likely going to use the EJ22T ECU along with a Unichip since Trey knows that technology well since it was what they sold and tuned before the accessports. Anyways, we'll see. If you call Cobb, I am sure Noah will give you more details. 9 times out of 10 he's the guy who answers the phone...

Matt,

Sorry it took a while to reply, but my modem died. It was Struck by lightning. So am using Danny's computer this weekend.
I am not sure about how to find out the compressor size by markings on the housing. I just know what size compressor is in each of the EVO' s.
Danny did seem interested in the turbo install. Give him a call. If you need to get a hold of me, call me at home as my modem is toast and I don't know when I will get a new one.

Chad.

Hey ya,
Finally, somehting that looks 'Real'!!
I am a bit confused, does the 92 EJ22T not come with intercooler over there?
Standard boost over here, (Aus), is one Bar, (14.7Psi), but some WRX's/RS's have been known to run more completely stock!! I have had the Select Monitor on a 99 'Rex that was running 17Psi Totally stock, (I mean BRAND NEW!!). I Currently run 18-19 Psi with standard 'Cooler and Apexi FMIC.
What does a 'standard' EJ22T run over there? What is the highest RON fuel available? You could always go with Solid H/Gaskets. Check out some of the Jap sites, (most have 'Engrish Sub Titles' :D ).
Please fill me in as this is strange to me......

Cheers

None of the 91 to 94 EJ22T Legacys had an intercoole. They ran 6psi and then 8 psi under high load, with a really small turbo. THey had 360cc injectors. A closed deck block with oil sqirters. All the internals are forged except for the pistons which are cast.

As for fuel we dont measure it in RON, we measure it in octane. In some states the highest you can get is 91 octane, others its 93. Race gas is sold at some places with 95+. Our gas sucks compared to yours.

Forgot to add, the HG are not really a problem with the ej22T, I have never heard of someone blowing a HG on the ej22T. The later DOCH 2.5 n/a have a bad problem with blowing HG.

That looks really nice, I'm jealous. I can't decide whether to get a cheap used starter bike (like 600cc) or go ahead and do a turbo upgrade to the rex. Decisions decisions. :)

I hear ya, read:'R-O-N'= R ated O ctane N umber!! LOL!
I can understand that you would pop gaskets at anything over 10-11psi, charge air temp TOO high, (even with HEAPS of fuel).
Chuck a 92-95 model aus or jap 'cooler on it!
Seperate Coolant, heat exchanger etc. Plenty of mods to be done there and Ambient air temp not such an issue, (the only reason H2O 'coolers were dumped was cost!). You can, 1:Run a higher volume pump, 2:Play around with Copper Pipe and Dry Ice in a 'Coil Filled Resevoir'-good for drags, or ultimately, run your A/Con Evap Modded to 'Wrap Around' a custom Heat Exchanger Under Bonnet!=Better than water spray on Air2Air!!
All costs dollars, or time, depending on your persuasion. BTW or Highest Pump Grade Fuel is 98 RON(Octane). Go with AVGAS-or 50-50 Mix with high grade fuel, (My fuel of choice in Porsche-Cup Car). Keeps the stupid scrutineers happy at the track as it looks and smells almost the same.

Cheers,

Hey, legacy92ej22t

Did you have to fabricate new oil lines?

legacy92ej22t

Hey, legacy92ej22t

Did you have to fabricate new oil lines?

Nope, the stock lines work. :) The only thing I had to do was switch the coolant feed (in) line around so that it pointed back towards the EJ22T's coolant tank location. I got the 16G and CES Racing up-pipe in and am running 16 psi for now. It pulls extremely hard. My buddy could pull on me in his STI but not by much. I need to get an adapter for my EGT so it's not in yet, which is one reason I'm staying with 16 psi. I hope to get my CES Racing cross-pipe in very soon too. I'll try to get some pics up tonight.

Thanks. That is a Saab 900 TMIC. They are a very popular intercooler within the BC/BF turbo community because they're almost a perfect fit and look OEM. Now that I have a turbo with the proper compressor outlet angle, I think I'm going to try and run an STI TMIC or go for a FMIC kit from Perfection Motorsports.

looks good and ya didnt even have to clock the turbo. You should try to fab up some type of air diverter for the IC, might help and it might now, but it worth a try.
