Anyone up for a cruise tonight? My friend with the 944 has a route planned out. I will check with him later on the details.

Ummmm I posted this thread today so I'm talking about tonight

Anyway, we were thinking of a drive out in the Vail area. Sean wants to explore some of the twisties out there. If anyone has another idea we are open to suggestions.

We are meeting ~9:30 (PM Mountain Standard time on Sat Night (tonight) 7/24/04 ;) ) at the Coffee Exchange on Tanque Verde between Sabino Canyon and Kolb/Grant.

If I was there, I'd be at it.

As it is, I'm in Dallas. At least they have 93 octane for 1.90 or so here. :disco:

It was fun while it lasted :)

This is that chase movie I spoke of...

Getaway in Stockholm (BIG FILE! 259 MB) It is a ftp site. Over 30 minutes (ftp://ftp.sysadmin-racing.com/videos/AnythingNew/Getaway_In_Stockholm_2.mpg) Click "Save as" to keep and view.

Here is the link for the scanner... http://www.bearcatscanner.com/ the name of the scanner is BCT8

You have that Bearcat Scanner? Does it work pretty well? I've been meaning to get one, but still haven't got around to it.

There were some fun twisties. Although when I got home I found a nice 8" crack at the bottom of my windshield. :( Must have been following too close and had a rock hit me.

STiMULi- That scanner is cool. How big are the dimensions?

I really like this Scanner. It does not have the best reception qualities of any scanner I have ever owned, but it is not designed to. It is way easy to program and use. With the mobile antenna it is all the scanner you will need in this area at least until PIMA county updates its radio system.

The cop detect feature works great! It works better in some states than others because of the nature of the individual State Highway Patrol Radio systems. It is designed to detect only the Highway Patrol Radio systems and not local police forces but you can still program them in and listen if they are calling your name.

Arizona detection type:

The way it works is it listens to the input frequency.

When the officer transmits he uses a frequency (input) to reach a local repeater. All the other officers and dispatchers are listening to the repeater frequency. Since the input is low power (just enough to reach the repeater) unless you are sitting on a mountain top you will only be able to hear it if you are close. This will give your scanner a hint that the is an officer in the area.

The Scanner screams out a tone and a red light will come on for about 3 minutes to let you know you have approached the "spider web" and you have awoken the black and white recluse :)

Most other states use this type of detection:

About two-thirds of the state highway patrols now equip their officers with hand-held radios so that when away from the safety of their cruisers, they can remain in contact with the dispatcher or other units. But since the small radio often doesn't have enough power to talk to a distant transmitting tower, mobile extenders are employed.

These small transceivers, mounted in the patrol vehicle, communicate between the officer's portable radio and the cruiser's more powerful police radio, giving him clear communication with the dispatcher. In most states, when the dispatcher keys the microphone, it sets off every mobile extender in the state. By listening for that specific frequency, the Bear Tracker sets off audio and visual alarms to let you know that a highway patrol car is within two or three miles.

Yes it is harder to detect officers in Arizona. Get a good radar detector and run like hell. Just kidding about the run part :)

Here is some more info I found about the scanner

The BCT-8 replaces the popular BCT-7. The BCT8 mobile scanner improvements include expanded frequency coverage-250 channels, improved display and keypad backlighting. The biggest news is that the BCT8 scanner radio is now a Truntracker. Our favorite improvement is the design of the radio. It looks good! Uniden has included their popular trunked system decoding into this scanner.

The BCT8 still has the highway patrol alert function-still one of the best features. This radio will alert you when patrol cars are in your area regardless of whether they have the radar on or not. This alert works in most states throughout the U.S. BCT8 mobile protection helps to advise you against all forms of speed measurement including Radar, VASCAR, Airplane, Clocking, and Laser. Like the BCT-7, the BCT-8 will help you stay alert to changing conditions, emergency vehicles, constuction and speed-traps. Simply punch in the state abbreviation in the menu while you travel and you are set with all the programmed BCT8 features for your area or state.

The BCT8 includes convenient preprogrammed bands for CB, police, weather, fire, DOT, News and EMS (ambulance). This is a very nice feature and is programmed specific for each state. Includes Uniden trunktracker and Frequency guide, AC adapter, Mobile antenna, telescopic antenna for base use and DC car adapter.

The BCT8 comes with a handy Mute switch. Memory back up protects you valuable programming and data when the radio is turned off. The LCD backlight is easily read during day or night. Dimensions are 7.06"W x 6.10"D x 2.44"H.

The mobile antenna is a wire connected to 2 suction cups. That is really all you need for what it is used for. Since it connects inside the vehicle you can't blow it off or break it unless you blow the windows out :)

I actually had a great time after we were done "exploring" new routes. StiMULi showed us a nice place to go on a future drive. I'm sure it would be more crowded on a Sunday morning though. The guys that went home after the first half missed out on some good stuff. We will have to do that run again on a Saturday night in a few weeks.

It got stupid for a few minutes while I was scaring the locals. I really enjoyed it. The loop is a blast!
