View Full Version : so I corner weighted the STi today
lukerussell 07-27-2004, 05:15 PM 3120 lbs., 3310 w/ me in the car (ziggy ziggy - ziggy piggy, bill and teds). 60F/40R weight distribution. Cross weights are now perfect.
to get 3120 lbs i removed the spare tire/jack/tools and all the carpet and misc. trim in the trunk. the metal strips and other junk behind the rear seats. gas was a little over 1/4 tank. I/C sprayer was full. I put a crappy stereo in the car.
thursday = alignment.

ChrisW 07-27-2004, 06:00 PM Nice!
I had the opportunity to check corner weight my EVO at a tour event. I came out at 3150 with a perfect 50%/50% split without the driver. that was on the stock suspension, 1/4 tank gas, no spare tire/jack and the rear carpet removed.
with the driver it was a 60/40 split like you have.
If I went to lighten the car as much as you did, I think I could lose another 50 pounds or so. Jbrennen should know, he has already done it with his EVO in SM.

3042 pounds (w/o driver of course), this past Saturday at the Northeast Divisional Championship.
But the car that won weighed about 1000 pounds less than mine. Darn FWD Civic gets to swap in an Integra Type R motor, and has a 1900 pound minimum weight... :furious:
lukerussell 07-28-2004, 09:31 AM a buddy of mine has an STi that weighs 2890 lbs. w/ the driver. but it's pretty much completely stripped. it's amazing what 400 lbs. can do to a car.
luke
trhoppe 07-28-2004, 10:20 AM 2890 lbs. w/ the driver
Are you sure thats not w/O the driver?
-Tom
lukerussell 07-28-2004, 11:02 AM yep. no carpet, carbon fiber front seats, no airbags, no rear seats, no metal bumpers and other misc. metal parts i couldn't identify, carbon fiber trunk and hood, no spoiler (i took mine off once, that thing is like 30+ lbs.) and countless other small stuff.
it's the dude who got 6th in the One Lap this year. We do track days a bunch.
luke
trhoppe 07-28-2004, 11:35 AM Damn. Thats one light friggin STi.

sounds like blake fuller from braille automotive. white car right?
sube151 07-29-2004, 04:06 PM STi is like a pregnant cow.
razorlab 07-30-2004, 03:16 AM For comparison:
2004 WRX Sedan, no spoiler, no sunroof, jack - tools - spare out:
3096 without me, 3261 with me, 58F/41R weight dist. Recently I took 18lbs off the front going to a 11lb battery. So my weight dist might be a tad better now.
http://www.norcalmotorsports.org/users/bryan/mods/chassis/wrx_cornerweight_12_9_03.gif
Lukerussel: what metal strips are you talking about? Isn't taking all the crap out of the back throwing more weight dist over the front?
trhoppe 07-30-2004, 09:19 AM Do you have a suspension and exhaust on your car? That stuff takes a bit of weight off. Mine and stxwrxracer's WRXs are both at 2950 race weight.

BriDrive 07-30-2004, 01:39 PM Cornerweighting Food For Thought:
Each gallon of premium gasoline weighs approximately 6.1 ~6.5 pounds. (Depends upon its API gravity)
A 2mm height adjustment on the WRX at one corner only will reapportion approximately 9 ~ 12 pounds through all 4 plates.
Even changing your seating position has extraordinary cornerweight effects.
If cornerweight REALLY matters to the individual and they think it is a critical aspect of their auto-x time, then consistency of fuel load and seating is also critical.
Finally, this was a waste and I'm sorry....but its still very interesting to know how extraordinarily small elements make tremendous differences in overall crossweight.

At the time of that corner-weighting, I had a cobb cat-back and JIC coilovers. I also had 17x7.5 Rota's with Azenis Sports (we all know how heavy those are.
Now i have a full turbo-back and uppipe and lightweight battery and other tweaks.
When you say 2950 race weight, what does that mean? That's a huge jump in weight difference from my car, how did you do that? Maybe the 2004's are heavier for some reason?
trhoppe 07-30-2004, 04:16 PM Mike's is a 2004 :)
Light pulleys, intake, downpipe with straighpipe, no muffler, Teins, small battery, trunk completely empy down to metal, lighter wilwoods. Mike (stxwrxracer) has pulleys, intake, dp with turboback + muffler, JICs, stock battery, stock brakes, emptry trunk, bigass wing and 2 15lb seats. Basically the seats on his car and the small battery/no muffler/light brakes on my car cancel each other out and we end up with the same weight. I'll be down to 2930 once I pull the passenger seat for the Kirkey. I could be at 2900 if we could change the drivers seat, but have to keep it since we have 3 totally different size people drive the car.
Corey Ridgick's 2.5RS is down to 2680 in STS trim doing the same lightening methods as us.
edit: I have 17x7.5 attacks with azenis he has 17x7.7 SSRs with azenis.

OK, i will have to re-weigh mine now with all the mods.
Weight difference parts I have on the car:
JIC coilovers
no spare or tools
whiteline rear sway
Cobb cat-back
Helix downpipe
Helix uppipe
12lb braille battery in front
Stoptech BBK
Rota 17x7.5 Actions with 225/45/17 Azenis Sports
bunch of bushings, other little crap...
Are your backseats still in? Weight with floormats still in, etc? I'm impressed, but again, i need to re-weigh my car.
:bryan
trhoppe 07-30-2004, 04:30 PM Forgot a couple of things also. Backseats are in, floormats all out, 1/4 tank of gas. Mikey also "said" he took out all his speakers. I was thinking of pulling the speakers/stereo and replacing with a velcroed in ipod, but its a grey area of the law.
-Tom
razorlab 07-30-2004, 04:43 PM I forgot to add my car is setup for open track events, not autocross. Not that that really matters I guess. weight is weight.

btw, how is your car 50/50 without a driver? You must be talking/confusing it with cross-weights right?

lukerussell 08-02-2004, 09:48 AM What were each of your corner measurements?
LF - 1020 RF - 968
LR - 681 RR - 641
Cross - 49.8%
Total 3310 with 190 driver = 3120 w/o driver
Rear 40%
Lukerussel: what metal strips are you talking about? Isn't taking all the crap out of the back throwing more weight dist over the front?
yep. they actually didn't weigh near as much as I thought they would, but in my opinion, less is almost always better.
FYI
Mods:
no muffler or midpipe
everything out of the trunk, even carpet and trim
those metal strips between the trunk and back seat - out
JIC's
3/8 tank of gas
Mine and stxwrxracer's WRXs are both at 2950 race weight.
is that w/ a driver? my car needs a bigger diet.
luke
trhoppe 08-02-2004, 11:11 AM is that w/ a driver? my car needs a bigger diet. That is w/o driver. But we cannot remove anything other then using lighter parts to replace stockers because of class restrictions. Even the glovebox and center console metal chunks are still in the car ;)
The thing that sucks right now in Speed WC is that the WRX has a 2850 w/o driver limitation to it. I would rather get 2650 or so and have a few less HP. Given a full strip w/ a roll cage, we could definetly pull 300 more lbs off the car.

I think the lack of a sunroof and a lightweight battary helped.
razorlab 08-02-2004, 08:19 PM I think the lack of a sunroof and a lightweight battary helped.
That shifts a couple hundred pounds to the rear? I don't believe it. Either the scales where messed up or you where reading the cross weights.
