A few people have asked me what my CAI looks like, so here are a few pics of what I started with, to where I'm at now.

First is a pic of what I’m using now, 3 inch pipe and a modifiedy stock air box. It’s very loud, and is a HUGE improvement over stock. Forgive me for the rag, is for stopping rattles until I find the right piece of foam.

Here is my first version, its 2.5 inch pipe with a rubber peice, that attatches to the stock air box. PM me if you want to take this off my hands.

I'll be the first to say 'Nice DIY CAI'

I built a 2" intake tube with a similar design, but didn't like the change over the stock setup. So I eventually got the Ganzflow and its great. However, a 3" intake is always worth the R&D.

What did you notice different from stock? Sound, throttle, mileage...

Instead of the rag, maybe you could consider something like the rubber piece that PDM-Racing uses for their CAI (www.pdm-racing.com). I have one of their intakes, and it's just a piece of blue rubber sheathing, split down the middle, that you wrap the fender hole with.

I bet 2 inch was is too small, stock is 2.5.

The sound is sweet, very loud at WOT. Idle is louder than stock by a hair, crusing is a lil louder too.


Here is a pic of how the fender had to be opened up a few cm. I need to find gromets to cover the holes the masking tape is covering...lol

edit; I forgot to mention that i have a K&N drop in filer too.

u can also use fuel/vacuum/whatever hose instead of that cloth

That just gave me an idea...

I took this idea and simplied it, instead of cutting up the airbox, I put a 2.75" silicone sleeve over the stock 90 degree bend and then used a 3" 45 degree ABS plastic elbow, 3" ABS straight pipe and a 3" sleeve over the elbow and 2.75 silicone sleeve. It's a tight seal, not as loud as my other intake and with a K&N panel filter it can only get better.

What are the chances of a puddle splashing into your hose from the fender.

Well, its not like Hoover suction in there so the car could be submerged to the point of the pipe inlet and it would still take a few minutes of WOT to pull any water in.

There is a chance. However, I have a Ganzflow, which is the exact same design as the pic above. It draws in air from the fender well while maintaining the stock airbox.

Recently here in Texas we had some crazy rainstorms that caused flooding around most of town. The water that was shallow enough for me to drive through was enough to spray water up very well into the fender. I never had a problem and others on this board have had the same experiences. If your car is sitting in a deep puddle and you WOT, it would give you the best chance of water ingestion. If your cruising along and hit a puddle (generally we all slow down for puddles), then you'll have no problems.

This is coming from a RS owner with a 2" drop.

BrysImpreza - Your intake is just like my first version. But yours looks cleaner. The only bottle neck in your intake is the bend on the air box. But you can always fix that later. :devil:

The chances are very small, unless you drive in half a foot of water or more. Inside the fender there is lots of space. And the intake draws air very high up in the fender, all in all I would say is just as safe as the stock location. However the stock intake has things to catch water. But you know a lil water don't hurt, hell it even can help clean the motor. What you don't want, is the intake being submerged in water..... blah blah blah **end ramble.** ;)

You must have never put your hand infont of the intake and opened the TB. Motors move so much air they make Hoover vacumes look like kazoos.

IF the intake is submerged it will only take a few seconds @ WOT before hydro lock sets in.

Hole in the fender well is closer to 2.5" than 3". For the full 3" to fit into fender I would think you would have to dremel it out a bit as above.

Sweet DIY"S. I have the Ganz CAI and because I got it used, the plastic segment for the fender well was missing. I used(1) of the plastic housing that covers the spark plug wires to line the hole and place the intake there with no problems.
