View Full Version : Anyone else freaked out by "pull" type clutches?

Ok so i'm putting in my new clutch and realized it's a pull type. Not a push. My whole wrenching years have been with push clutches, and this was the first pull clutch i've encountered.

It's very scary to me that the clutch is only connected to the fork via that Clip. I hate the idea that i'm depending on a clip to ensure i can always drive my car.

Am i the only one?

If you've ever tried to remove the T/O bearing - that clip is STRONG, i have no fear of it coming loose under normal driving conditions.

i am a little concerned because i have heard they are very hard to take off when you remove the tranny but somehow mine popped out when we put it in, so i had to just push the clutch fork up and it clicked in. seems fine now, but makes me a little weary.

Weird huh? The fork on the wrx trans totally kicks the rs's push type's butt though. I love the pivot on those, there is zero play.

You should see the sti's flywheel, I would describe it as reverse stepped.

Stupid Q, but can you explain push versus pull type for me? Obviously I can be of no help to you :), but I would learn something.

Well, The pressure plate has a bunch of radial fingers on it. When force is applied(pull or push) the fingers release the pressure on the clutch disk via the pressure plate allowing it to spin. When you stop applying force it re-applies pressure to the clutch disk.

Push type push the fingers toward the engine to disengage the disk.
Pull type pull the fingers away from the engine to disengage the disk.
